It sounds like you’re charging away from home at one charge point for 4 hours, going home for that 4 hours, then going back to your car to move it to another charge point to charge for another 4 hours, then going home, then going back to your car once it’s all charged (I know, massive run on sentence). All the while paying the particular cents per kWh at the charge point, also you mentioned that you get a ride to your car from your apartment, which would be multiple rides. Does the cost savings really add up to enough to justify all the going back and forth, versus paying the $85-$100(and something) per month to charge where you live and have your own designated parking space. It sounds to me like paying the monthly fee at your apartment might be worth it mainly for the improvement in quality of life.

If your apartment is right above your garage, and you have a Nema 15-30 for your dryer, can you run an extension cord out the window and to the garage only when you're charging?

Apartments, condominiums, and HOAs need a low cost charger that directly bills the user, through WiFi or cellular service. ChargePoint and a couple of other charger companies sell commercial chargers for this purpose, but they are very expensive. We need a charger priced similar to the Wall Connector that measures consumption for multiple users. Assuming the average person doesn't need to charge every day, multiple users could share a single charger. For heavy consumption, you need a dedicated charger. Since each user's consumption is measured and debit accounts are established, building management is reimbursed for electricity and may make a small profit. I too live in a luxury apartment located in Boston. Although the cost to park in building garage is high (market price), the additional cost for a private space with unlimited EV charging is $20/mo. At a condominium in Florida, I installed a sub-meter and NEMA 14-50 receptacle and only pay $0.09/Kwh. Both deals are outstanding.

It is a shame your apartment charges so much for charging. I suspect part of the fee is related to having reserved parking. If you are not planning to be in one spot for a long period to shop or dine, level 2 charging is not practical. Making special trips to drop off your car for hours of charging is NOT practical. Use the Tesla L3 charger up to 80% and stop worrying about your battery.

It’s not even that, it’s the long waits if you travel for work or live somewhere that you do not own but rent where you can’t install a charger you can wait up to hours to fully charge. If you live in states that snow or have very cold weather the car will not open or drain the battery to the point you cant go home. My last job the owner paid to install a charger since his car has died in the parking lot and gets drained during the cold winter months so he rather drive his diesel truck then his eco friendly Tesla certain days due to that reason alone.

I would disagree with your stance on Superchargers that it degrades battery faster. I had 2 model S in a span of 3 yrs. Both with Unlimited supercharging. I didn't notice big impact from supercharging which I did 99% of the time. My main rule was not to have car parked charged to more then 80-90% (sometimes 70%). Also I would never discharge car to less than 15-20%. Most harmful to battery would be to supercharge car to 100% and leave it parked for weeks.

Was about to comment this. Not to mention the majority of people haven’t had Tesla’s long enough to support such a theory whilst only using super chargers. People can get away with using a supercharger once/twice a week so long as they’re not running it to 100% every time

I was actually looking for this kinda of statement that super chargers doesn't degrade battery faster. But today I spoke with one of the Tesla's sale representative and she did not recommend using super chargers all the time and said it will deficit your batter life if you do so. I live in an apartment and I am not sure where to go for charging all the time and wait for hours to get it charged after I buy a car. Please let me know alternatives other than mentioned in this video.

I’ve never done a complete full charge at one of these chargers. The most I’ve charged at Civita (the park I went to in the video) was 97 miles and it costs $6.45 and it took 3 hr 54 min. But like I said the prices are all different depending on the one you go to and if they have a flat parking fee. I would say the normal speed I see is 6-7kw/hr and for a full charge for a Model Y that should take about 9 hrs. Hope this helps!

Hey Willy, so it’s hard to say how much you would save because it really depends on how you drive, if you run the AC, if you have sentry mode constantly on, if you drive on hills etc. what I can say is that it would definitely save you more money then a car that only gets 8mpg. Also I will say one day I charged 97 miles at a ChargePoint that charged car at .35 cents per kw and it cost $6.45. Hope this helps!

I came to watch this because I couldn't for the life of my figure out how ppl who live in apartments, townhouses, houses without garages etc etc would possibly use EV as there's nowhere to really safely put this charger. Even my townhouse would be easier than an apartment buttttt I don't trust not having a garage and not having ppl tamper with it. I could never fathom the idea of leaving my vehicle somewhere to let it charge... I dont think they really thogubt all this through while really pushing the electric vehicle thing. Most of us would never be able to accommodate for this 🤷‍♀️ I however would love the $85 a month compared to gas prices these days 🤷‍♀️

I was talking to someone that was telling me that they just planned all the charging around when they go to do groceries. So they're able to charge do groceries and it works. Also they said they try to park near their apartment window and have the cord connected. Yes is a slower charging speed but he picked the apartment he wanted on the side which then allowed him to do this because is hard to see that his Tesla is charging lol. Got to do what you gotta do.
