Hi Jon look into High Purity Alumina (HPA) It is currently used in some higher grade Li batteries as a separator and sometimes within the anode. From my research I believe HPA will become a favourite for battery manufacturers as it allows fast charging, fire safety, longevity of the cycle life. There are companies now looking at HPA doped graphite anode’s which allow the anode to absorb more Li ions as there is far more available locations for the ion. Far less plating occurs when HPA is introduced to the chemistry.

I recently had a CCS2 retrofit and the service center also performed a full car check including battery health of which the stated in writing the car is in near perfect condition. I drove the car 112km, the car at the start had a range of 346 km, at the destination the range was 244 km. I love this car and am confident the battery will stay good for quite a while.

Thanks for the great video! I've had my 3LR for about 9 months. I had to use a supercharger a grand total of 4 times. Once on a road trip when I first got it and just didn't want to worry about my range coming coming home, and the other 3 times were just me forgetting to charge at home for whatever reason. Staying in town, there really isn't any reason to ever have to use a supercharger at all anyways, as long as you aren't an idiot like me and forget. LOL. It's nice to know that the superchargers aren't really killing my car, though. I always worry about that. The climate here in Vegas it probably going to do that a bit over time though.

Be aware that some Manufacturers partially forego certain battery preservation measures to have better charge times on Paper. E. G. Often a Tesla will take very long to go from 95% to 100% because batteries get very sensitive when almost full. Other manufacturers just power through which looks impressive but probably isn't so great for your Battery. I'd rather stop at 95% and save my Battery life.

DC current is much more gentle on the battery than AC current, even when AC is converted to DC. Key to Long battery life is slower charging, and minimal use of the batteries total capacity. The most ideal type of charge would be slow DC charging, but that's rarely available. Most of the time, the sole purpose of DC charging is to reduce charge time.

I don’t know, I mean all they do is lower kw used for charging which in turns raises the minutes it would take, then take into account for good battery health it should not be charged more than 80% and thr fact that already a tesla does half km with a full charge compared to a normal diesel engine with 50 liters in the tank, doesn’t seem incredibly cleaver to be considered “the future”. I suppose normally to fully charge a tesla at home I would spend less than to have a full tank of diesel and the electric car is more efficient but still I don’t see how this can be the future, needs to be improved heavily

Is there any tried and tested tips people should know about for added longevity for the battery pack? What SOC is best for storage? Say you travel half the year, and the rest of the year car is in daily use? What about cut off voltage when charging? How low can you go on the pack without affecting longevity? I know in the early days there was a 80/20 rule. Don't charge above 80 and don't discharge below 20. Is that still a rule?

Another channel where he only supercharged while running an Uber service had his battery die at about 150K miles. He said he never plugged into AC power one time though. Plugging into AC power and charging to 100% every so often performs a top balance of the pack, which is important on a pack with so many cells. I'm sure he could have gotten another 100K out of it if he could have AC charged for several hours just once a month or so. Well, as long as it was due to heavy cell imbalance, and not a faulty pack, which I don't think it was if it went that far already. I don't know if the car performs active balancing if you leave it plugged in below a 100% target, but would be good if it did. It won't be perfect, but far better than nothing. I mostly AC charge and leave my target at 85% in winter, 75% in summer. Then once every few months I set it to 100% for a night and let it do its thing. So far I have ~4-5% degradation after 30K miles. So looks like I should be on track to be in the average degradation curve.

Here in Norway I have an 8 year old Model S 85 and due to the ridiculous cost of electricity in the last 12 months I have been using supercharging exclusively. I constantly monitor my battery health and always keep it between 20% and 80% and I drive a lot. I still get over 440 km according to the app although that's not what I get IRL which is realistically around 280 before I supercharge as I have to condition the battery due to the extreme cold. The only thing I have noticed is the vampire drain is around 1% per 24 hours in the winter when it's minus 15 centigrade outside (I have no garage). I use the defrost function every morning for about 20 minutes before I plan to depart or else my windows freeze solid and won't drop down for the door to open. Supercharging doesn't worry me as my insurance fully covers the battery and drive unit should they fail. The essential apps to have are Tessie, Scan My Tesla and Watt Time (on my Samsung Galaxy 4 SmartWatch) along with the official Tesla app of course. Tried the "Wear For Tesla" app but found it kept having trouble communicating with the car too often to be trusted.

Interesting that there was no mention of the very different charging characteristics between the NMC vs the LFP. The LFP do not need charge throttling and can be fast charged to 100% without degradation unlike the NMC which need throttling to avoid degradation. A BMS difference is the LFP cannot be balanced until they reach 96-97% SOC unlike the NMC which can be balanced at any SOC. The NMC packs are much more conducive to fast charging, meaning you can take up much more KWHs during a charging session, giving you much more effective range between charges while on a long trip. Tesla has recommended maintaining battery packs between 30-80% for long term optimum health with the NMC. Where the LFP are not degraded by 0-100% usage, thereby giving a much more useable range for the same size pack. Of course the trade offs have been energy density but that's about it. With a significant lower cost and nearly three times the longevity, increased safety, seems like a no brainer. Cheers.

  • @babaluto

@@mifino That is a very good question regarding supercharging. Of which I cannot directly refer to any documentation. What I can say is LFPs are normally rated at 1C, which means that version will charge from 0-100% in one hour. I have seen higher charge rates in smaller cylindrical formats like the 32650 LFP rated at 2C. These were used in electric buses and made by A123 Systems. The main limiting factor in charging is thermal management and being that LFP batteries have a significantly lower internal resistance, there is less cause for heat. I'm sure I'm missing some points on this but I hope this helps.

In other words, what matters is the time spent at high levels of charge, not simply reaching a high state of charge. Is this credible advice? Tesla's claim on the range is very wrong on LR. 1st year of driving, no matter where you charge you'll lose about 10~20 miles of range. After 1 year later, you'll see the degradation slows down. So if Tesla claims that it has 347 miles on a full charge, the actual range is probably around 320.

I wonder if *how* you Supercharge makes a difference? While this is only one data point, I find it worth considering. One Model 3 owner showed a video with his car at 130k miles on an early LR RWD Model 3 (just under 12k VIN). He had to charge to 100% and showed 303 miles of range. He Supercharges 98% of the time as he crisscrosses America, but stays between 70-30% SOC whenever possible, unless range needs dictate otherwise. He’ll charge to 100% if needed and go to 0% if that’s the only option. He pointed out in another video his car showed 310 miles of range when new and he never saw any of the range bumps to 325 miles from software updates. I also have a LR RWD, a 2019 model, but it only has 24k on the odometer. Looking at my stats via ScanMyTesla, 63% of my charging has been L2 and 37% has been L3 because this is our road trip car. My car sits from 30-50% SOC between trips and is charged to whatever is needed. Locally that often is only to 60%. My goal too is to stay between 70-30% SOC as much as possible. As of this comment my car is still showing 310 miles of rated range. I did get the software bump to 325 miles. Analyzing a recent road 3k mile road trip with data from TeslaMate, it showed I was able to stay in the 70-30% SOC range for the entire trip except for 7 times I dipped below 30% SOC and 5 times I went above 70% SOC, with the highest level being 86%. The lowest was 16% SOC.

The high charging current is bad for lithium ion batteries. Besides, state of capacity, you have also charging efficiency, and discharging efficiency. Your battery will lose its maximum capacity over time. It will be charged slower using more electricity to charge and delivering less electricity making your car lose in power and run shorter mileage. SOH is only about battery capacity. You car may need to charge much longer using up more electricity and can run much shorter distance. So, by the end of 100,000 miles will be pretty bad if you are in either hot or cold areas.

The faster you charge a battery, the faster your battery suffers degradation of capacity. Yes, the BMS can mitigate the rate of degradation, but it cannot change the fact that, all other things being equal, charging more slowly increases the life-cycle of NMC batteries, and really all battery chemistries. The Tessie data is not what I would consider accurate or legitimate, given that it conflicts with so many other data points, and flies in the face of documented science.
