How to Change your oil on the Triumph 1200 XC XE Scrambler and many other Triumph 1200 models such as the 1200 Speed Twin, 1200 Thruxton, and other 1200 Bonneville variants. It is super easy to do, I will show you how! I am using the K&N 204-1 filter with Castrol T4 full synthetic oil. You only need a hex head, ratchet, and 5 minutes and you are done! Don't forget to lube and adjust the chain, do your safety checks, ect, as well.

    For goodness sake, clean the areas around the oil filter and the oil plug BEFORE removing them, not AFTER you have put them back. Removing the filter and oil plug with all the road crap still around them is a classic way of introducing harmful debris into the engine. Also, that plug should be cleaned off carefully using brake cleaner or similar aerosol spray, paying particular attention to the magnet and then dry it before putting it back and fitting it with a new washer. Oh, and please DON'T use the draining oil on the seal of the new filter either, use a small drop of clean new oil. The old oil contains micro metal debris which can create a seal leak. Sorry but this is a conscientious mechanic speaking here!

    I would also recommend using a torque wrench when tightening the drain plug. It is a $16000 bike after all... you can afford a decent torque wrench if you can afford this bike!

    Thanks so much! Mine is low on oil for whatever reason 800km after the 1000km change. I‘ll just top her off but the video was very helpful! Having the low slung exhaust from zard makes access to the fill way easier :P

    Just a heads up to anybody that prefers using Oem filters, you can buy the Triumph Service tool that removes the OEM filter, if you plan on replacing it with a new Oem filter Here is the part number for the oil filter wrench T3880313

    You should admonish your viewers that the nut welded on the end of the K&N filter should only be used in removing the filter, and never tightening the new one. Many reviews of the K&N point out that if you use the nut to tighten the filter, it may cause a leak at the spot welds where the nut is welded on. I also make a point of replacing the crush washer on the drain plug. It's cheap insurance to make sure you have no oil leaks.

    Thanks for your sharing! I am considering to buy this XE model but It ridiculously costs a lot to do such simple maintenance in my country local dealer. But after completed changed filter and engine oil, how to disable the “Service Reminder” signal shown on the digital TFT panel? Does this Scrambler 1200 have this service reminder setting? Greetings from Malaysia

    The reset reminder was available after the first production run. If your bike is one of those, you have to get an update from the dealer. Once that is done, press the home button, and you will find it in one of the menus. Thank you for the comment!

    I bought a tool for that. It's an OBDII called dealertool and worked perfectly with my scrambler: dealertoolcouk.ipage.com. It's a bit expensive but worth the while if you're gonna work on your bike by yourself.

    Filters right from Amazon. The factory one is super tight, you just have to talk mean to it. I use a large pair of channel lock pliers to take off the factory, the K/N one has a nut on it. I did paint the shiny objects, yes, used VHT. I have a vid on that posted. Ride Safe! Stay Safe!!

    Thanks for the video, quite helpful. But Triumph has not made it easy to check and change oil on this particular motorcycle, which I also own. First of all, you cannot get a center stand for this motorcycle which makes checking the level of oil by yourself quite difficult; it's a balancing act with top-heavy bike and kneeling down on your knees, you can never quite be certain that the Scrambler is in a vertical position. Why not have the level marks in the glass conform to the bike in it's side-stand position? Secondly, the filler cap is very hard to access with a tool. I don't have a hex wrench that long, sorry, and Triumph doesn't provide one. At first I thought I would have to dismount the header to gain access. If you put it way back into the recess of the motor, than at least make filler cap easier to twist with your bare hands. And then you have the problem of getting the oil from your bottle to the engine. I have never seen funnel like the one you used and again Triumph doesn't offer one either. In summary, I think design won over functionality for this particular Scrambler. No center-stand (option available on the XC, BTW) and the usually mundane task checking your oil and just filling up your engine oil requires special work-arounds and contortions. The manual is a joke and fails to address any of the difficulties.

  • @BackDraftBikes

    @BackDraftBikes

    I couldn't agree more. I hate hate hate the oil fill. A few tips for you: The funnel is available at any auto parts store, it is a Transmission funnel. They are like $5. Secondly, a tip an old mechanic showed me...take a scrap piece of lumber and put it under the side stand to get the bike close to level. You have to be careful, but it does work. I just ask my wife to look when I am on the bike. I have also used my cell phone to snap a video and then I would look at it to see the oil level. ---CENTER STAND WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER! Anyways, ride safe!

    Hepco and Becker make a centre stand but it's extra weight so I use bobbins and a bike lift. You need it for chain adjustment anyway. Buy an extension for your hex wrench, cheap and surprised you don't have one as you use them for everything. Long funnels you can get at a parts store or pop your present funnel into an appropriate length of clean garden hose. None of this is hard.
