Triumph Scrambler 1200XE | Part 1: Getting More Air | Installing A DNA Filter/Removing The Snorkel

UPDATE: Part 2 where I talk about the changes and install the booster plug can be found here: • Scrambler 1200XE | Par...
I just needed a little quiet time in the garage, so picked a couple small projects I've had lined up for the Scrambler. This is kind of a part 1 to increasing the airflow handling for the 1200 Scrambler XE, I expect part 2 (and a bit more explanation) to come out next.
Along with just putting in a more free-flowing air filter, this also shows how to just change the air filter in a 1200XE in general. It's a simple enough project but there just happens to be a lot of relays in the way of the airbox access.
In addition to an oiled filter, I also finally removed the snorkel. TEC Bike Parts ( • New DNA Filter for Scr... ) talked about the benefits of the air filter and snorkel removal, so go check out their awesome video.

    Nice video, points to ponder are- 1. The K&N technical department when I questioned them directly said they did not claim engines make more power with their K&N air filters fitted, they then went on to emphasise the benefits of the filter being reusable on cost grounds. 2.Air filters are fitted to internal combustion engines to remove dust and grit that is suspended in or thrown into the induction airflow, K&N filters allow far more debris through than paper air filters, this debris then travels into the carb or throttle body and into the valves and combustion chambers, it causes wear. 3. If we are to believe that an air box or intake is restrictive then it’s restrictive effect would be most noticeable at wide open throttle, when the engine is demanding the most air, this points to the probability that at lesser throttle openings a standard filter and intake system provide more than enough air.

    I pulled my snorkel but need to get an upgraded filter. Already a noticeable improvement.

    Even just the snorkel is crazy the difference. The upgrade to the filter will help mainly because the stock is more of a paper filter and depending on where you ride might be a bit more affected by the stuff the snorkel could deflect. That and just the bit more air will open up the bike.

    Nicely made video! I understand the theory behind opening up the air intake more... in what riding conditions do you really notice the benefits of the mod?

  • @UnknownOverLand

    @UnknownOverLand

    You’re going to see most benefits at the lower revs or when the throttle is partially open. During that time the ECU is doing a lot more work trying to control air/fuel mixtures.

    Nice and straight to the point video! Once you swap out the filter and removed the snorkel, did you do the "auto-adjust" where you start the bike without touching the throttle and let it run until the fan kick in? Just curious if it's needed or not.

    Anyone with legitimate mechanical knowledge know if removing the snorkel is likely going to lead to damage? I don't know why the engineers would put it there if it doesn't do anything

  • @MrYogass
    @MrYogass Жыл бұрын

    I hope you are not taking it off road now. New filter with more dust going through and no snorkel. If you ride off-road with dusty or mud conditions I would even thought about adding pre oiled filter to a snorkel to reduce the chance anything would go through filters.
