    Michael Archambault - i have a super high-tech arrangement that involves the headgear from an old face-shield, some rather precisely bent & shaped coat-hanger wire, and a bit of duct tape. It looks ridiculous, but it keeps my crappy cell phone attached to my forehead well enough to make a GoPro green with envy. Pretty fancy up in here, doncha know...

    question: why are ribbons so long? i noticed that they usually seem to have about the same lengths on each spool. how does that all work? i'm guessing it's not like a film camera, where it goes from one spool to the other as one is filming. are you supposed to not touch the spool after you put it in? or should you move it if it gets low on ink?

    Thanks for this very helpful video! I own a 58' hermes baby and unfortunately the lids covering my spools keep it from propperly rotating so I have to keep the lids open when typing. One question while I'm at it - does a spool eventually dry out? I'm not using it a lot, only for writing very old-looking retro letters to my retro-loving friends.

  • @TypewriterJustice

    @TypewriterJustice

    6 жыл бұрын

    they do indeed dry out, but with so many manufacturers & styles of ribbon it's hard to say how long they last. I've seen ribbons that were probably 30 years old still make an imprint, but i've also seen them be dry as a bone. Most of the time i sat 5 years or 250k words, whichever comes first, your mileage may vary.

    hi, the gear under the right ribbon spool on mine doesn't move at all/won't turn (the round toothed gear under the ribbon spool), so that the ribbon won't advance. i just picked this hermes 3000 up in a second hand shop. it's near mint, but i discovered this problem when i got home. i can't believe that the gear would be frozen given the machine's condition. is there some mechanism on the hermes that would prevent the right spool gear from turning either way? thanks.

  • @TypewriterJustice

    @TypewriterJustice

    7 жыл бұрын

    Since your machine was exposed to the public, odds are it's just jammed or there's something stuck in the mechanism(potato chip, paper clip, dead bug, etc). my knee-jerk reaction would be to reach up to the little guides which determine the direction of the ribbon and flip them back & forth several times while repeatedly typing a key(any key, doesn't matter which) and be sure to keep an eye on what's going on at the same time, maybe shining a flashlight down in there with my 3rd hand. Are the ribbon spool posts turning at all? Twitching? Does only one move, and if so, does which one change when you flip the guides to the other side? Have you flipped the machine upside down and given it a good shake? Have you worked the ribbon selector(sliding control lever on right side, 4 positions) and operated the machine in all 4 positions, while keeping an eye on the ribbon feed? Compare the two side's spools/mechanisms, and look for differences - they should be almost identical. Follow the physics as you type, and look for what it's doing...as well as what it's not. Do all of this with either a hot cup of coffee, a glass of scotch, or a cup of coffee with scotch in it. If none of the above puts you on the right path, you might want to find a repair shop near you on the list at site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html or if you're in the Dallas/Fort Worth area you can bring it to me & I'll be happy to take a look at it for you. Let me know what happens!

    that was so generous of you, man, thank you. i'll investigate along those lines. fortunately yesterday was a banner day in lucky typewriter finds. i found an absolutely mint 1978 olympia sm9, (supposedly the suckier late model but what the hey; does have a strange large font though), AND an olivetti lettera 32, which seems to be fully functional. both were 75 swedish kronor, about 7 dollars. my question is what type of ribbons should i buy for these? can they take the same type? can you recommend an ebay ribbon seller? thanks again pal.

  • @TypewriterJustice

    @TypewriterJustice

    7 жыл бұрын

    Wow! that's a lucky day of shopping! Good work! Regarding ribbons, they both take a standard 1/2 inch ribbon, though you'll need to pay attention to whether or not there are eyelets/grommets on the ends of the ribbons: the SM9 will NOT need them(and indeed won't work right if they're present) whereas the Lettera 32 WILL need them(and won't work right if they're missing). You should be able to find either quite easily on eBay for less than $10 USD if you just search for the name of the typewriter + 'ribbon' Congratulations on the great machines! those are both favorites of mine, excellent workhorse typewriters, and quite good looking ones in my opinion :) Cheers!

    thanks. absolutely in love with working on the lettera 32, but the SM9 has a freaky ass font. it's big, and sort of a softened, more rounded senatorial, but i can't find an example of it online. any idea what typeface this is?

  • @TypewriterJustice

    @TypewriterJustice

    2 жыл бұрын

    most universal spools will fit the H3k, and any standard 1/2” (13mm) ribbon with eyelets will work; if you have the original metal spools, you should transfer the new ribbon over to them. there are many decent sellers out there, but here is one i trust www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Hermes-3000-Portable-Manual-Typewriter-Spool-Ribbon-Black-Red-Ribbon-/201618415977?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

    Do you know where I can buy some touch up paint for the Hermes typewriter

  • @TypewriterJustice

    @TypewriterJustice

    Жыл бұрын

    i wish it were that easy. over the years, not only did Hermes used different tones & finishes on their machines, but those machines have aged in different environments - no two are exactly the same. i have friends who have gotten decent results by taking a paint chip(or a side panel/ribbon cover) to their local paint store, but the match they got has rarely worked for a second machine. Personally, i use Testors model paints, and i mix to match on a case-by-case basis; they offer a wide variety of colors and finishes available(gloss/semigloss/flat) and you can get fantastic results with a bit of patience & careful testing. Start with some white/semigloss & a few drops of kelly green in a small mix cup, and give it a whirl! it’s gonna want a hair of black & probably more yellow than you might suspect ;) good luck!
