*ITS AN OLYMPIA SG-3* whilst the oiling your grandfather gave it will get it working - it will ultimately stop it working He oiled the "segment" where the key bars attach and this should NEVER be oiled. You should clean this off very thoroughly with alcohol and a paint brush as soon as possible - the oil will dry and gum up the keys. This is an exceptionally good Typewriter BTW.

ok so.. I actually still use a typewriter regularly (learned how to type on one!) and I want to share some fun bits here. - I once lent my typewriter to a curious classmate of mine who was a fast typist on a keyboard and her fingers were too weak to push the buttons. By definition on a typewriter you have to bottom out the strokes anyway. - Because I have to bottom out, I type really loudly even on linear switches. My favorite keycap for _purely typing_ reasons is therefore the SA profile because they're very thocky. - My experience with my typewriter (I know there are better typewriters out there, but my typewriter is _mine_ and that's special) is a mental handicap preventing me from surpassing 120wpm on a regular keyboard. There is no such thing as rollover on a typewriter - you will jam the keybars together. Maybe it's because of this design that the QWERTY layout was even made in the first place - no going too fast or else you'll jam the keyboard anyway, so the layout is intentionally not as ergonomic. - My typewriter was my cramming machine back in college. If I had to cram a paper the literal hour before it's due, I break out the typewriter. A professor even took a photo of me, rendered it in black and white, and published it on their instagram. - Double-spacing between sentences is very important on the typewriter to improve legibility of the text. EDITS: to add - mine is a portable laptop-sized typewriter that belonged to my parent, so I would even joke with my friends that "oh my laptop has the best anti-theft. who would steal a rusty old keyboard? absolutely nobody that's who"

1:46 Abbreviation for "When You See It". Used in the osu! community whenever the number 727 appears, started from a 727 pp play by Cookiezi. The term "When you see it" was originated by aireu when he played guess who is back and got a 727pp play. Aireu: Goddamnit... so close... SEVEN TWENTY SEVEN! SEVEN TWENTY SEVEN! WHEN YOU SEE IT! WHEN YOU F*CKING SEE IT! *points at the screen* SEVEN TWENTY SEVEN! When you f*cking see it. Twitch chat: *wall of text of "WYSI"*

I actually have a typewriter I use on a regular basis. I use it to write lists, recipes, letters, poetry, and cathartic ramblings just to get it out of my system. It was a little intimidating at first, but I got used to it once I found my rhythm and cadence. Compared to using a keyboard, the typewriter actually gives me a sense of accomplishment because I'm pounding away on something physical. And since every word I put down on the page is permanent, it forces me to slow down and think about what I have to say. If I mess up, I just simply blot it out with X's (or use white out). It teaches me how to self edit, and be more diligent with my writing. I'm glad you at least took the time to try it out. I recommend you try different brands since every typewriter has a distinct personality and flow. I think an IBM Selectric would be more of your speed.

I spent years working on a typewriter and wrote two full length novels 30 years ago ... *those that weren't published because after 15 years, just found the manuscripts that were buried away...* ANYway, nice job, largest typewriter I've ever seen, and clearly not portable. Take 'that' down to the coffee shop. WPM actually means words per minute that you can type without spelling errors or grammatical oopsies. I'd love to work on a typewriter again but no publisher accepts manuscripts via a typewriter much less in a big manuscript box. In the class we took as teens, our goal was to get to 60 WPM without errors. That was hard! But to pass the class that was the final exam. I might add that was long before a word processor or computer *class that is* in the 1970s.

Pretty awesome! The carriage on your model is HUGE, you can even write on A4 sheets horizontally. Something you can't do with most Typewriters as their carriage is only wide enough to allow A4 Paper sheets to go in vertically. RESPECT and LOVE to your Grandpa for fixing this machine for you :D 💞

Wonderful video!! Love seeing more people getting into typewriters. This is the Olympia SG3, a later model and one of the greatest desktop typewriters out there! I can get my typewriters up past 130 wpm, but average around 70-80. The dot matrix key is actually a security screen key, often used for check making. It prevents someone from whiting out or copying the text. Anyway, thank you for putting this together! Very entertaining, and you have my vote for legitimizing SnakePower. If you want to type some more, send me a letter!

i have ghost written several hundreds of books on my great grandfathers 1894 Maskelyne typewriter, and of those hundreds of books, all but 11 have been published and sold well, i use it out of tradition, my family are all writers, my twin sister writes stageplays for theatres, my mother wrote radio scripts and my father was a stenographer, and we have always used a typewriter, and i must admit, theres something unique about the whole experience of using a typewriter side note: i own a copy of every book i ghost wrote, i may have no legal right to call the work my own, but i take great pride in the fact i wrote them and like to keep them to remind me that im good at what i do

For the keyboarw typewriter you schould have searched for a teletypewriter or an electrical one but you would have to translate the sgnals into modern keyboard layouts wich is another problem. For the typing error TIP-EX sold strips in the past for that exact problem, hence it's name tip-ex. Backspace, hold the TIP-EX strip infront of your error onbthe paper, retype the same wrong character, backspace and type your correction.

That's a feature we used back in the day for when a check was written, after the numerals were typed in, we'd go back over it and shade box it to prevent someone from changing and then or just making a copy of the check, this shading box would print back like a black box. It was a kind of check security, very cool feature, still works today and you absolutely can either sign or fill out a check by handwritten, or by type. And having that shading feature helped Keep your sanity. Yw.
