Much appreciated! I've always wanted to get a typewriter, and now I managed to get a Brother 210 that I fell in love with! It came with what I assume to be the original ribbons, so I'm happy that I've managed to replace them with your help! It's also fun to just be able to use an old piece of technology to write on and to see how it looks. Within the second day of owning it, I wrote a short story that looks more professional than if I wrote it on my laptop.

Thanks now I know how to save my progress in real life!

Great video, not seen one in such detail and quality before. I also like to select the red option on the ribbon colour selector and press the G and H key at the same time carefully until they jam. This in combination with selecting the higher ribbon position of red makes it a bit easier to access the ribbon vibrator when inserting the ribbon as it raises it to its highest level

Well, my bro and I had a different method. I was going through our old stuff the other and discovered an old typewriter. It was all good, the mechanics and everything was still okay. The only downsides were that it looked old, and the ink on the ribbon had dried. So what we did was we opened up a pencil battery and took out the graphite and black stuff. We crushed it and mixed it with water to create our own homemade ink. We dipped the whole ribbon in it. It was a little too wet at first, so it was splashing too much on the paper, and nothing could be seen. But after a few hours, it had become better, and we could write and see everything clearly. Though not as great as a normal ink, it's still pretty good.

Aha! The ribbon has to be BEHIND the center guides, closest to the platen roller. Thank you Joe for that key piece of information... Prior to watching this video, I thought I'd installed the ribbon exactly correct, but when I attempted a capital letter, the ribbon kept "bunching up" against the middle guides as the vibrator was making its downward path. I then watched exactly how you did it in this video and rethreaded the ribbon through the "skinny loops" so that it was on the other side, closest to the platen, and sure enough, the upper case typing operation was smooth after that. Thank you for your help Joe! I just unpacked this wonderful Olympia "Carina 2" from it's shipping box, and now that I've got the new ribbon thing figured out, it's time to have some fun typing with my new machine.

Finding this video is such a blessing to me. I think you for the close-up shot for threading the ribbon in. I got this typewriter for my three year old grandson for Christmas and I was having a problem with the ribbon. And you solve my problem thank you Joe

By the way, the typewriter tip quickie thing is a really good idea. There are so many useful tips and tricks that newbies can learn.

Great video thanks! Recently bought a second-hand Brother Webster XL-500 and the ribon feed was never working. Thanks to this video I realized the plastic peg that moves the ribon spool on the right had broken off and that was why the feed was always jammed/not working. Fixed it with a match and some bluetack and now it’s a perfect typewriter!

After much searching I found my 93 year old mother a manual typewriter at the Salvation Army for $25 ( NZ). She previously owned a typewriter, but gave it away when my father died because he always changed the ribbons and she didn't know how! Not only have I found your wonderful instructions, but coincidentally, it is exactly the same model of Brother ( the tag on top had been taken off, so I didn't know the model) I have now written Charger 11 in a sticky label and stuck it on!! and, also know how to change the ribbon ( as long as I can procure them!) Thankyou!!!

Thanks! This was exactly what I needed to watch. The ribbon on my used Brother Deluxe 800 kept bunching up around the ribbon vibrator whenever using the red ribbon or if the "H I L" lever on the left was close to H (not sure at this point what that even does). Turns out the ribbon was just threaded through the guides backwards.

Can you do a video on cleaning ink off a typewriter? My Remington Rand Deluxe model 5 is black but it still shows the ink very well and it gets annoying. I always find that on my typewriter the ink dries too quickly and I can't wipe it off. Thank you for reading this.

The problem I always get with changing my ribbon or adjusting it, is it gets all over my hands. And when I'm closing the top back up it smudges all over the metal and plastic. Takes a bit of time to clean it off. Would the gloves help? Or would the ink just smudge off from the gloves?

Will these universal ribbons fit for older typewriters aswell? I've recently cleaned and fixed an older (from around 1947 I think) Woodstock typewriter. But I don't know what type of ribbon I should buy for it. And, for how long does these ribbon generally last?

Hi Joe, I noticed that the BROTHER CHARGER 11 typewriter has a formed wire fitting in front of the ribbon vibrator. What is the purpose of that wire? Could it be for typing a name on small card stock??

Some machines have a "touch adjustment" lever that makes the action easier or harder. BUT: unless the machine has been serviced, often this control does little to change the feel; you may have to hit the keys harder. I'd advise you to use two-finger typing instead of touch-typing, you can easily make a harder imprint with your index fingers. Another cause of a faint imprint can be the ribbon isn't fresh and inky.

I asked the Reverend Ted Munk and he answered the correct ribbon is "Group 4, but wind the ribbon onto your old spools."

Could you advise me? I have an electric Kresge/Kmart cassette electric 440 or another name Brother JP-10. Can the complicated looking ribbon cassette be replaced by universal ribbon spools? The dimensions (inside the cassette holder) seem to be accommodating. My search for the original Brother cassette ribbon has proven to be impossible. Thanks so much for your informative videos.

If you remove the cassette, are there two spindles that the cassette fits onto? If so, as you type, one of the spindles should turn. If it does, and the spindle is the same size as on a ribbon-spool machine, then you may be able to use ribbon spools.

Are the ribbon spool drives supposed to be rotating in the opposite direction? For my underwood 315, the left rotates counterclockwise, and the right rotates clockwise, and I’m super confused on how the ribbon is supposed to feed if they’re rotating in different directions :(

They should rotate in the same direction. With both spools removed, one of the spindles will be rotating as you type, that will be the take-up spool for that direction. Whichever way the ribbon feeds onto that spool (front or rear of the spool) it should roll off the other side on the same front or rear; i.e. if the right spindle is turning (with no ribbon installed), and turning clockwise, then the ribbon feeds onto that spool from the rear side, and the left spool should also then be turning clockwise, feeding off from the rear of its spool. Conversely, if the right spindle is turning CCW, then the ribbon feeds onto it from the front side of the spool, and the left spool should turn the same way, feeding on from its front side also. It's possible the ribbon is wound wrong somewhere in the middle of either spool, or one spool was installed upside down relative to the other. You can try to slowly wind the ribbon onto one reel, making sure it's not twisted. Once you get to the end, then reverse the direction and wind it all the way the other direction. You'll eventually find where the ribbon is either twisted or folded back on itself.

I have a Montgomery Ward Cartridge IV and have no idea how to change its ribbon, any tips!

These were made by Smith-Corona and used a now obsolete ribbon cartridge. Some may be available used or new old stock online (*Bay), and some people have had success reloading them with fresh ribbon.
