Really appreciate your video. One of the low beams just went out on my 2012 X5 and, because it's a BMW, I was worried that the replacement would involve something complex like removing a fender or having to reset a setting in the ECU or PCM. So glad to see it's a straightforward replacement. Video is well done with a good use of graphics to explain motions involved to release covers and clips, something often overlooked in other DIY KZreads. Thank you!

The step by step explanation is on-point. Note, a person w/ above average forearms will have a hard time w/ this repair, especially plugging the cord to the bulb. I really don’t understand why BMW couldn’t make the cord longer or access to the bulb easier. Weight lifters will have a hard time changing this bulb.

I agree with most that this is one of the best DIY videos on KZread! I just replaced my Xenon bulb for my 2010 X5. Since I too have large hands, it was a bit of a challenge to remove the plug from the original bulb in such close quarters. The total job took less than 30min. I bought the Sylvania brand bulb from Advance Auto Parts for $99 after my BMW dealer wanted to charge me over $200 for the bulb only and $71 for labor! I do think that the newer bulb is now noticeably brighter than the one not changed. I am currently debating wheater I'll spend the $99 and change the other. We'll see....

Great video! The dealer would have changed $250 for the bulb and I don't know how much to change it. Got a Sylvania bulb for $80 at Autozone and saved myself at least $200. Note: my X5 is a 2012. The 2012-2013's do not have the little wire retention clips that hold them in. In those years, the buld turns a quarter turn counter-clockwise to come out.

Thanks for the tip! Here's my take... The replacement in concept is really 'easy'... What makes it very difficult is the confined small cramped space. Disassembly of old light is easy... Putting it back is frustrating. You can't really see it... You have to one hand it, inserting the plug you'll need to get a feel for the connection. Once connected, you need to insert it and secure it with the wire clips. You can do one at a time. Then for the cap, give it a slight jostle (shimmy) until it lines up and pops back in. Good luck!

Plug the light in before putting it back. BMW could have moved one of their "supports" for the fender either 1" in front or about 4" back and it would have been much easier. Bought bulb from link below (Phillips DS1) around $50 with coupon. BMW quoted me $243 for the bulb only no installation.

Sorry to hear about that, it’s frustrating to lose parts down in the engine compartment. One possibility is to use on of those expandable rods with the magnet at the end. As long as part of the lightbulb is magnetic (I think it is, but would need to test), you might get lucky and snag it out with the magnet. The trick is the magnet will be attracted to all sorts of metal parts on the car along the way.

It sounds like you may have a defective bulb. If it’s not a huge hassle, I’d try to get replacement from your vendor. If you want to be sure the bulb is the issue before you get a replacement, you can try the bulb from the other side of the car for confirmation.

  • @slagletoby

Helpful Hints: -Not all the E70’s have the clips holding the xenon light bulb. -If you cannot turn the bulb, pick up a crescent wrench from Harbor Freight for $12, you want the crescent wrench that has the least angle and as straight as possible, and the shorter handle. Draw the shape of the square bulb on a piece of paper and take it to the store with you to be sure you’re buying the “smallest crescent that will fit” the square shape of the bulb encasement. Go straight in with the the crescent wrench after removing the xenon power connector. The passenger side is the must difficult and you may need the crescent if you cannot turn the bulb when removing and replacing. Good luck! Bring a couple of extra F-words with you you’ll need them. These bulbs can be a total Karen to remove and replace but you’ll get it. 👍👍

Thanks for the tutorial though you didn't say anything about the fatal electric shock warning in the manual and on engine/headlight. I was able to take the cover off of the xenon bulb encasement but am nervous about electrocuting myself. Are we supposed to disconnect the battery first? My 2013 X5 doesn't have the wire clips so based on other comments we're supposed to do a 1/4 turn counterclockwise? Please advise. It looks so simple but don't want to injure myself.

  • @motorsmegabytesmods9936

As long as your car is off and the key isn’t in the ignition, theoretically there shouldn’t be any power going to the lights. I’m not a licensed electrician, but these bulbs are definitely meant to be replaced by the owner, so I can’t imagine there would be high risk. As others have commented, BMW changed the wire clips for a 1/4 turn setup (same as the daytime running light bulb), which should be easier to manage.

In 2011+, I believe they changed from the clips to a quarter turn locking mechanism, similar to that on the driving lights.

Thanks, but the video didn't match my 2013 X5. Mine doesn't have any clips, instead the bulb needs to be turned counterclockwise to be dislodged, and clockwise to secure the new one. It was a pain in the butt to figure out the position the new bulb should be in, in order to start securing it in place, my best approximation the cord connector should be at 4 o'clock position in order to travel to 6 o'clock. Interesting tidbit - both driver and passenger side bulbs have to be rotated in the counterclockwise direction to dislodge them.

This is a great video unti you make it a 2.5 hour dilemma. First step. You drop the bulb into the inner fender bay. NO you can’t reach the fallen bulb with a hand. Don’t try. Next grabbed a metal hotdog stick and a cell phone on video. Then you can watch yourself scoot the the bulb inboard to an opening in the front of the bay and retrieve it with a gloved hand and begin again with installation.

@@motorsmegabytesmods9936 Hi. Thanks for posting the instruction video. I swapped the passenger side bulb with RCP - D1S6 - (A Pair) D1S/ D1R 6000K Xenon HID Replacement Bulb Diamond White Metal Stents Base 12V Car Headlight Lamps Head Lights 35WRCP from Amazon. However, it is now just a fixed (low, I think) beam. Is there a second bulb for low or high beam? I understood the D1S bulb provided both high and low beams, but is that not the case? I've inquired with the mfr also, as I suspect a faulty bulb. I'm trying to determine if the bulb provides the dual beam, or does the projector lens move somehow to adjust the same bulb between high and low? Thanks for any help. I replaced the bulb, but my mitts could not reconnect the cable. Used my wife's small hands instead. :)

Greetings, Ken! You’re correct, the D1S bulb handles both the high and low beam. This is the bulb in the outermost headlight. The headlight to the inside of it on the X5 is the daytime running light. It sounds like you have have a faulty bulb if the one of the beams (high or low) isn’t working. I’d have to look up the bulb you bought, but the cheap ones can be a crap shoot. Good luck getting it working, I’m sure a swap of the bulb will get you back in action.

I have personally watched this video 745 times - I'm a bit slow with this stuff clearly. And it took me about an hour for one with my big ham hock hands in those tiny Beemer crevases and it felt incredible and your video was amazing at describing the process otherwise I would have never got it done at all. Here's THE RUB though.... I had purchased two bulbs to just replace both at the same time. I actually DROPPED the first one down the cavity somewhere and I've reached all around and cannot find it!!! I'm not kidding haha. Any ideas how to fish it out? Is it dangerous stuck in there you think? Thank you MMM!

I too appreciate the thoroughness of the stepped instructions. However, I found it impossible to change the passenger side headlamp for several reasons. The braided connector cord does not pull up and out above the crowded mess to easily replace the bulb. … mine only comes out about 6” so I have to remove the bulb and insert and install the new one with no room to maneuver “below” without damaging the new bulb. I even rehearsed inserting the new bulb and housing back into the socket sight unseen (using the old one) and it was impossible. I think the instructions may work well for the driver-side (a lot more room) but did not work for me on the passenger side. …. and I am a former Navy diver used to working underwater by feel. Tom A

I had the same problem with the connector cord length (mine only about 4 ") . I was ready to quit after an hour or more of trying. Couldn't imagine how I could attach the bulb to the connector with one hand only without being able to see and with the connector freely floating around the cramped space The next morning I had an idea and connected a common spring loaded clip to one end of a thin rod and used it to grasp the braided cable. Now I could use my other hand to keep the cord/ connector near the replacement insert. Eventually I was able to guide the two together and seat the connectors. Re all the other comments, I don't understand how anyone could do this as described in the video. Maybe my year/ model has an exceptionally short connector cable coming out of the headlamp socket.

Hi Superman - in the video, I show an access panel for the daytime running light bulb (46 seconds into the video). That is a standard halogen bulb and also lights the angel eye rings. Rotate the knob for that panel about a quarter turn (maybe 1/8 turn), and it will pop off. You then have access to the halogen bulb, which is removed with a 1/4 or 1/8 turn. There's a link to the bulb in the video description.

you totally gave us all the OBVIOUS things to do,,, I got my lid open gee thanks.. I got to the bulb and removed it, fck ouch hands too big to fit.. there is no way I can do this in reverse with my forearms and hands. The cable is much to short to attempt to connect it to the bulb prior to inserting it. It would be useful to see a Technique on video of the contortionist maneuvers required.
