@brookensangling

On the big lake I like to see surface temps in the 50’s and bottom temps that are in the 40’s tight to shore. The bite is better when the ports are cool but I don’t let that stop me from fishing. If they are moving to the river you alway have a good shot. A fish that is moving typically is feeding.

Caught my first King jigging Manistee Lake two days ago. I'm (no pun intended) hooked. That fish took me around the boat fighting it. Didn't have a scale, but it was a fat 37" buck. Now I'm chasing the dragon for more Tight lines bro. Thanks for the info to us newbie anglers. Question though about fishing etiquette. Any definite do's and don't to keep for being "that guy"?

If you see someone fighting a fish it’s good to give them some space. With the bigger fish as you now know you have no control of where they go right off the bat. Good luck and tight lines!

The rod that you are you using is rated for up to 5/8 oz lure. Do you have any issues feeling the jigging spoon with it being so light ?
@brookensangling
11 ай бұрын
I have no problem feeling my lure. There isn’t a lot out there rated for a 2-2.5 oz lure that I could stand to jig with for a decent a amount of time. Maybe you could find something technique specific for lake trout but this has been my go to the last couple years and it has yet to fail me.

I would chime in here and say to go with a saltwater jigging rod like a Shimano trevala. Medium action with MF rod taper would be ideal suited for this application

I wouldn’t be afraid to use it. Ive caught a lot of salmon on 7’ rods jigging. If I was using 7’ med/heavy I’d think about using a mono so you have some stretch to make up for the loss of action in the rod.

@brookensangling

I have used a Medium Heavy and Heavy action lamiglass which are great for fighting the fish. You can control them a little more but there is only so much you can do with a big king. You have to let them run and ware themselves out to an extent. That being said bigger equipment will ware you out and cause your jigging technique and hooksets to suffer. It is definitely a balance.
