Cobia can be caught throughout the water column from the very bottom around structures and ledges to the surface around buoys or free-swimming. Because of their versatility and often aggressive appetite, cobia are caught using a wide variety of jigs, lures and live or dead baits.
“A bucktail jig, either plain or tipped with a live bait is my favorite lure for cobia because it can be bounced off the bottom or retrieved along the top,” said Capt. Rush.

“I also like to have a rod rigged up with a Madscad 115 from Nomad Design. It can be cast a mile and has great action and quality hardware.”
Some days cobia are the dumbest fish you’ve ever seen, but on other days the smartest. You need to be ready for everything in between.
“As far as my outfit goes for cobia, I like to use a PENN Slammer spinning reel around a 6500 size. I will be fishing 50# braid to a 40# to 60# Seaguar fluorocarbon leader tied to the lure or hook,” says Capt. Rush. “I do prefer a Mustad long shank bait hook to present any type of live bait to a cobia that is being finicky. The long shank offers chafe protection in the cobia’s mouth.”

Pretty much the same as we do in SE NC. Mostly sight fishing them off bait balls menhaden early summer. 1.5-2oz white, pink, chartreuse buck with 8” Gulp grub. Largest was 87.7lb, and only have caught 3 that way. Don’t get out as often as I use to. That was June 2013. In the Chesapeake I’ve live lined bluefish or croakers on a float with great success as well, though he got off. I love seeing them large girls just cruising slowly but focused right into your presentation. Mid Summer 2013 Great channel, just found it and been binge watching after curiously looking into deep dropping swords. Rush is the man!

Hey man. Nice informative video. Been chasing those brown coats all season. Hooked up to one when we were in cudjoe last week but spit the hook at the boat. This season is looking grim on putting one in the box. Just subscribed . I hope to learn more about keys fishing from your tips. We usually get down at lease once a year. Tight lines.... Going to check out your other videos. First time on your channel.

I use the same reel but on a Star Paraflex. My Carnage II rod is already occupied lol. When cobia are feeding, there isn't much they won't bite...
