We used outriggers with 6 dogs. It certainly increases our confidence about not flipping.

I just did a canoe camping trip video with 6 dogs (about 290lbs of dog) and it went well. We did use outriggers, although we really didn't rely on them much.

But what if your dog weighs 80 pounds? I guess stick close enough to shore that my kid could swim in with the dog while I dealt with righting and bailing out the canoe. Then I'd go to shore and put the dog back in the canoe from the shore. Unless somebody has a better idea? I mean, there must be better ideas. I could try tying the bowline to me (so the canoe doesn't blow away with nobody capable in it) and getting in the water and pushing her butt into the canoe while my kid is steadying the canoe from the other side in the water. If the canoe was swamped it would be lower. Then we would have to bail it out once she was in. Not sure if that would work. Anybody tried this?

Curious to know what mode of operation you chose, did you come to a solution?

Check out scoop rescues and see if that would work. I also keep recommending outriggers if you have a bigger dog, many dogs, or aren't confident about not flipping.

Well I have not tried a scoop rescue but I don't see that going well. I could try some drills on a calm day in the shallows I guess. I can't afford an outrigger canoe. But I could afford a dog pool float which I could drag behind. If I capsized I could put Chloe on the float and tow her back. Probably she would try to get back in the canoe with us so I'm guessing my son would have to stay on the float with her. That would be a chore to tow 160 pounds behind the canoe. My dog Chloe actually weighs 95 pounds, not 80. We weighed her at the vet recently. My son weighs 65 pounds. We are going to go tubing down a lazy river so she can get used to her pool float. But probably if we go on any canoe outings I will have to just stick close to shore for now. My son is 9. He will outweigh his dog some day but maybe not soon. We have not capsized so far. But if Chloe makes any sudden moves from one side to the other, and we don't immediately counter balance, it is not good. LIke if she decides to bark at a dog in a power boat passing by!

@@michikosingh7144 That is a big dog to be shifting weight suddenly. Towing 160lbs is also quite a feat. I've tried towing people in the water and there's so much drag, it's really not a great option to rely on. To clarify, I wasn't suggesting an outrigger canoe, but rather adding clamp-on outriggers to your canoe. In my "Canoeing with 6 Dogs!" video we used old model outriggers from Spring Creek, but there are several on the market. They cost between $250-400. I also made a set with 4" PVC pipe with an elbow on the front and a knock out cap on each end. I just lashed them onto a 2x4 that gets clamped onto the canoe yoke. Total cost was about $25. I'll be doing a video in the next few weeks to show them being built and in use.

@@AdventuresInReach Oh! That sounds doable. I will check that out. Thank you for the tip! Yes she is a big dog but she LOVES the water and I have to figure out how to include her on our outings safely. So wrong to leave Chloe with a sitter while we go out on lakes. Ironically, before Chloe I used to have a little jack russell terrier (for 20 years) who was completely manageable and he HATED the water. After the little jack there's a steep learning curve owning a big husky/shepherd/lab cross. Chloe was supposed to be a temporary foster but yah, fail....
