Is the carrying yoke necessary for stability or can it be removed for added space

thank you.. I just got a 20 dollar canoe-- is old frontersman.. it needs new gunnel rails.. i cannot find any near where i live .. and they wont ship because too long... what can i use instead.. i can email you pics
