My meter was 3 stops off, I was ready to buy a new meter or find someone to repair it. I can't believe it but this actually worked on my meter. Thanks so much for this trick/tip or whatever you want to call it.

Thanks! Worked like a harm and prevented me dumping it again on ebay , :-) This little switch is to reduce the sensitivity of the meter by 3 stops if you use the darkroom attachment which is the adaptor with the plain hole in it so no optics in the adaptor. If the switch gets dirty it puts the meter in darkroom mode for the adaptor and so without the adaptor the meter is 3 stops off. A good reminder to NOT put this(or any other measuring device) in your pocket with lint and dirt but to keep it safe and clean in the pouch.

Thank you! It worked. I was planning to do all kinds of calibration procedures because my minolta v was way way underexposing. I came across this video and thought that looks too easy, probably won't work, but I gave it a try and the meter now works like a charm. Thank you!

This is, without a doubt, the coolest tip I've ever seen on the internet. I just bought a used IIIF to get into studio photography cheaply. I was dismayed when it showed 3 full stops off, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. After finding this tutorial, I opened the back of the head up, and it has a similar connection, which I cleaned with a five dollar bill, figuring that a fiver would be more effective than a single...;)...and, it worked like a charm. So add the IIIF to this tutorial, as well, as it works the same way for it (the contacts just look a bit different, but they are in a similar location). I don't know that this is really a "calibration", as it's more in the nature of a maintenance fix, but who cares? It just works. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

Holy crap it worked! I still needed to tweak mine a little with the calibration dial in the battery chamber to get it spot-on, but it went from useless (off by about 4 stops) to perfect! Amazing. Thanks!!

LOL! This works! Probably not "calibration" per se, but it does apparently reset the meter to read "normally." Before I did it the meter was giving me f8.0 at 1/60 and ISO 400. Afterward I got f2.8, which matched my Fujifilm X-T2 spot metering a grey card. Over 20 year old Auto Meter IVF works like new!

Amazing. The contacts do not actually "touch" but the readings are different after this trick, and now they match my Sekonic L-558 in spot mode (I've lost my dome on the Minolta unfortunately). I think it has everything to do with static charge that is making the readings off, but I wonder if the rubbing is actually causing the static charge, or neutralising it.

I have no idea, but it works... I have done over a half dozen this way. They were 4-5 stops off and it calibrated them to within 1/10 of a stop from a good meter. I had been taught to do this from a colleague.

I did it and it's worked even with a 20 euros! This is not a calibration but my Autometer had a 3 stop underexposed and now it is ok. Maybe is a fail in electric contact because lack of use.

I bought a second-hand Minolta AF IV meter and noticed right away that readings are not ok: put the meter readings to the camera and get 2-3 stops underexposed images. Google brought me here and now I have a fully working meter. TVF8 - I owe you a beer :)

tried it the first time, didn't work. Then I took it apart, cleaned that area with an eraser, put it back together...worked like a charm. I have a feeling the dollar bill cleans that area. Mine was a bit more dirty from the sea salt as I do a lot of weddings at the beach...this video helped save me $$$ though. bravo...

Hey Joe, could you please tell how looks sensor position when you take off a sphere? I think something wrong with mine, when i took off sphere, that sensor looks not like right on center, it's a bit shift, that's why i think it works wrong with viewfinder when you are metering the reflected light

Hello! I have a Minolta IV f that indicates ''U'' for low light no matter what ISO, speed or light condition it's pointed at. I've tried the dollar bill trick but it doesn't work. Any ideas how to fix that? A friend of mine told me that there are some buttons that you can click on to reset the lightmeter while opening it but he doesn't remember the sequence.. So if you have any ideas please share! Thanks!

I dropped my meter and opened the head try to fix it and found 3 different plastic "filter" or disc. One is clear, one is green and one is like a washer. Do I have to put them back in order? I did try without them and the reading is off 1 stop when I compared whith Minolta F spot meter. Can anyone help?

Hello! I have an issue with my Minolta IV F meter, Previously it used to show me the ISO in increments of 100,200,400,and so on, but recently when I took out my meter to use it after a long time, its suddenly showing me ISO in increments of 87,170,340 and so on, What could have gone wrong? Can anybody please help me to reset it back to normal ISO speeds. Thanks.

I don't think this is really a calibration. I have the problem where my Auto Meter IV F shows 3 stops off, and as far as I can tell, it's caused by the meter mis-recognising the incident metering dome as a reflective metering accessory. The operation you show in the video looks like it will clean or re-adjust the sensor that feels what metering accessory is attached.

@@celonziajohnson Unfortunately I figured out that it is a technical error, which requires expensive repairs. I was able to return it to the second hand shop and replace it with a Kenko without paying extra, and it works great. But it is always a risk to buy second hand electronics, so in the future I will pay the extra buck and buy a a new light meter, with warranty and all. Probably Sekonic.

    1. Learn what calibration really is. 2. Clean your sensor.

  • @jrtruthguy
    @jrtruthguy10 жыл бұрын

That could not possibly calibrate the meter. It will turn a non working meter into a working one, but not calibrated accurately. That would have to involve the sensor, not just the contact, which will get it closer.
