Honestly if you want to buy a project car you have two options: 1: you buy the cheapest shittiest one you can find and "pocket' The savings. 2: You buy the nicest base model you can find. I took the 2nd option with my 88' NA Auto Supra. Though I didn't screw around with the tranny or motor, just cosmetics, and honestly I'm over the moon happy with that. Getting a VERY nice base in the first place is the best way to go as you will likely save a monster amount of money and time on things you could have solved in the first place with a better buy.

I am mechanically inclined and got a 1973 ford Maverick 4 door, no engine or transmission, a 100% blank slate

That 3000GT VR4 looks amazing already, including the wheels. I hope the title situation get sorted out ASAP (sounds like you're experience in this aspect already). Congratulations on getting your dream car 🎉👏
