    I have built and raced many cars with my son. All of these are solid, winning tips. The only exception is the very last comment about building a car to 4.7 ounces. If your target is 5.0 then build as close to that and then, if allowed, use the race organizers scale at weigh in time to confirm where you are at and come prepared with some small increment stick-on or glue on weights and super-glue them on to get as close to the allowable weight as possible without going over. Tungston weights can be added to take up less space but add the weight you need.

    Robert Bond You are exactly right about the weight. I was just trying to get accross to the viewers that if you do not have access to the race time scale, it is better to be slightly off than taking a chance to to be over. I should have stated that more clearly. Having extra weights is a great idea. Thanks for such a well thought out comment.

    Thank you for the tips! Our Kub Pack doesn't allow graphite in the axles until after the first race. Also, we can't switch out wheels. Besides this, i think I'm going to add the weight in the back on this year's cars and examine the cars i had as a kid and see if we did the weight distribution correctly. Another tip...don't let the judges drill in your weights! :D My daughter's car last year had the weights spread equally throughout the car...she didn't win, or even come in any of the finals.

    We did all the traditional derbies: Pinewood and Rain Gutter, and ceremonies like Arrow of Light. We also had a 'partnershaft' partnership with German scouts at a town called Baunach (near Bamberg) and would travel to their really nice campground and do parades and activities. Fun times.

    Back when my dad build our pinewood derby cars, ahem I mean we kids built our pinewood derby cars, we poured melted lead into drilled holes, until the car was a bit above 5 oz, then used a drill to drill out lead at the race until the car weighed exactly 5.00 oz on the race scale. We also cut pieces from the remaining wood block to glue to the sides making fenders to guide air around the wheels, placing them before the front wheel, between the two wheels and after the back wheel. they didn't extend beyond the wheels, and were completely legal. We dominated our local pinewood derby and scout-o-rama. i can still remember sitting for hours before the races pouring graphite into the wheel hubs and spinning them over and over.

    Good stuff man!!! My sons car was of a tubeler design - scored in the top 10 fastest out of 150+ cars and it was way under weight. I used my pyro scale which is accurate 1/10th of a gram - had it at exactly 5oz but their scale was almost 2oz off so I had to remove weight-they recalibrated after we went through grrr. took 6th, 3-2nds and 4-1st:)

    You can polish the wheel centres and axles at the same time by spinning them to high RPM for 30 secs or so. I use an upside down bicycle or RC car. For perfect wheel alignment I use an old credit card as a spacer between the wheel and wood and a flat head screwdriver to ensure the axle sits flush and square . Combined with the weight positioning and graphite my step son's car won the whole thing and it wasn't even close.

    Majority of your weight should be 1" in front of the rear axle (a little less than 1" is perfect), not centered around it. Otherwise it risks jumping the rail and lifting up too much, which adds to your overall friction. Nothing wrong with a wedge design, provided the weights are added to balance the car around 1" in front of the rear axle. Also, always go as close to 5 ounces as possible, but not 5 ounces exactly. When you get an inspection done, it's easier to remove weight than to add it.

You have your head in the right place "for the most part" with your builds but there are a ton of things you would need to learn if you want to run really fast. If you're serious about wanting to step up to the next level send me a message and I'll get you pointed in the right direction. We are all about having fun, and helping out in our league. We also like to talk a lot of crap in a fun way too. Hope to hear from you.

    Do not "hammer" the axle into the block, pilot drill a hole in the block to ensure the axle is square to the block and that you do not crack the block. The axle should be able to be pushed into the block without a hammer.

    When you are drilling the holes for the weights, how deep do you drill the holes? Also, is there a standard sized drill bit that most people use?

  • @SpecificLove7

    @SpecificLove7

    10 жыл бұрын

    You should measure the width of your block and put a piece of tape just short of that length on your drill bit. And there are many sizes of drill bit, so you just have to do a little research on how thick the weights are and use that bit. Be careful not to drill all of the way through.

    The video you show of the race where one car is pulling away from the other down the straight has nothing to do with weight placement. That is, however, a great illustration of how one car had much more friction than the other and slowed down quicker. The weight doesn't do anything after the car is off the hill and on the straight part. It's all about your prep work and alignment at that point. Nice work otherwise.
