HOw to Make a Pinewood Derby Car With the Kids

My first woodworking project was a pinewood derby car for my cub scout pack back when I was 5. now I get to share that experience again with my kids.
The kids each took 1st in their Den and they took 1st, 3rd and 4th, overall. all 3 move on to regionals.

Some of my clearest memories as a now older man was being taught by a patient father how to use tools to make almost whatever my imagination presented. Well done James. Your kids will look back very fondly on these fun times in many years to come.

My girls and I made our first PW Derby cars about 5 years ago, on a plastic folding table with poor lighting and dull tools. But we worked really hard to make something cool, and the girls and I were hooked. I ended up building my workshop later that year so that we could take our cars to the next level. We won best design 4 years in a row and I now have a full blown workshop and serious tool addiction!

Fun project your daughter really went to town resawing that board lol. She did it better then I do sometimes. I wish I could go back and redo my derby car knowing what I know now. My Dad worked to much to help me so I went with what I thought was a cool looking car but didn’t go to fast or straight good to see you passing on not only woodworking skills but a love and enjoyment and pride in making things.

Wow! Through to the regional finals! Well done one and all and they all looked smart. I do hope we get to hear the outcome of that. Is Arthur Wright any relation? I remember my grandfather giving me a small plane that had a razor blade in it, a small ball hammer, a 1960s style multi saw thing that had a choice of blades and a couple of small chisels. I must have been 7 at the time, we got such safe toys in those days! I really like your family videos, and they are all so well behaved. There’s some good parenting going on there. Great video, I really enjoyed it.

Wood By Wright 2 He was one of my childhood heroes, he was an American naturalist who had a red beard. The first time I saw you you reminded me of him, then with your son's name I wondered if there was a connection. I had one of his books as a kid and I have no idea how many times I read it. That was in the days we got books instead of games consoles.

They don't get much simpler than basic hand tools. Everything we used in this video could be purchased for well under $100. This is about as simple as woodworking gets. No power tools.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo whole woodshop set up isn't basic tools lol. A screwdriver is a basic tool. Way to be condescending 🤦😒
