How to Build a Nightstand with Drawer | FROM PLYWOOD & 2x2s

Hey friends, let's build a modern nightstand to match the storage bed I shared in my last video!

This simple nightstand design could easily be used as an end table, too. It's a great DIY woodworking project for the weekend as it only takes a few hours to put together.
Check out additional tips, details, and information on the build here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-t...
Grab the printable plans for this project build here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
Wood Type: I built this from red oak--both solid wood and red oak plywood. However, any wood type would work fine for this. Construction lumber (pine/spruce/fir) and birch plywood are what I normally use most and are a great budget friendly option if you didn't want to splurge on oak!

    Your designs always yield attractive, solid pieces without the need for super expensive tools or twenty-five years of experience. These are no exception. Thank you for sharing. Shara, Happy New Year to you and what a wonderful project to kick it off. I built two night stands which we are still using but I have to tell you they took way longer to complete than yours probably did. Maybe I needed a Bubby for technical support. Barring that, I'd sure be buying your plans for a project like this because I've learned they really take a builder a long ways. It's been down to zero here making my unheated shop not so nice, but like you we expect some warmer temperatures. I understand you need a pause now and then to recharge and keep those creative juices flowing and it looks from that you're in full gear now. Hugs to Lucie and Bubby. Thanks for Sharing!

    I just watched this probably a hour ago. And I've just been thinking about it since then. I sleep with a cpap machine which is cumbersome and has tubing. For years I've wondered what could I get that was a nightstand, with shelves but had possibly a door? That way the cpap machine isn't always visible. Then I saw this. I think this would be a great option. It's possible that this could be made and I can add a little door on the front. And the cables can still come out of the back. I don't know why but no one hasn't ever addressed furniture options to store/hide things like cpap machines that are plugged in. But to me that's a whole untapped market. Thank you for sharing this. I appreciate it. Btw, I liked the bubs notification. What a cute and chill little kitty.

    Great video as always! Always a simple approach to your build projects, which I admire & personally appreciate. Thank you for always providing us with your best. I know you’ve mentioned people asking/questioning why you don’t show your sanding process or even your cutting process. I’d have to stay all that does is saves you from filming & editing time along with providing more time spent building & explaining when we can the sanding & cutting on all other 99% of woodworking channels. Basically saying there isn’t a need. Keep up the great work! Thank you

    Well, I know I raved about the design of the storage bed, but these nightstands just knock it out of the park. I am not kidding when I say that, once you publish the dresser (looking forward to that!) you should seriously consider submitting this suite to some design competition or magazine or something... this whole set is a perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality. "Elegantly simple." Things I love about the video itself: 1. the snazzy new animated logo intro, 2. the cool new subtitles with extra tidbits, 3. the unobtrusive way you integrated the sponsor bit, 4. some interesting new camera angles, 5. etc. etc. etc.... P.S. 6. Bubs, 7. Sock Monkey!!!!!!😁🤣😉 Happy New Year and welcome back!

    You do not always use table saw, are you still able to get precise cuts that are sufficiently straight/square?

    Shara: Another great build!! Always enjoy your projects. I've bought several of your plans and am in the middle of building your 2 drawer filing cabinet. I did notice that, for this project, rather than using pre-cut 2/2's you ripped a 2x4 (I assume at premium 2x4). As a 'newbie" woodworker I'm struggling with the curves and twists I'm finding in 2x2's How have you dealt with that? Would you now recommend the method you used in this project. Rip a premium 2x4 to get a straighter 2x2 board. Thanks!

    Hi! Thanks so much for your purchase and support of my small business! Yes I almost always rip my own 2x2s. You can learn more about why and how here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/woodworking-tips-square-edges-make-your-own-2x2s/

    Those look great. Did you consider doing oak panels vs plywood? I know pricing in plywood has been coming down, but wonder if solid wood be comparable?

  • @WoodshopDiaries

    @WoodshopDiaries

    4 ай бұрын

    I didn’t consider it. One reason: wood movement considerations. Second reason: glue up time to make the panels. Third reason: it’s SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper (at least where I live) for hardwood plywood than solid hardwood. A 3/4” sheet of red oak is about $88 and the equivalent amount of lumber (4’x8’) in, for example, 1x6s would be roughly $575.

    I heard that MDF is not strong, what does that really mean? It seems a lot stronger than card board.

  • @WoodshopDiaries

    @WoodshopDiaries

    “Not strong” isn’t a measurement. That’s subjective. MDF may work fine for some applications and not work great for others. It really depends on what you’re using it for whether it’s a good choice of material. Personally I don’t like MDF so I don’t use it in much of anything. My experience with it is very limited.
