How to Build a Mid Century Modern Console Cabinet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey friends, let's build a Mid Century Modern Console! This was such a fun project made almost entirely from (you guessed it!) plywood!
You know me--I love a good plywood build, and the mid century vibe definitely fits my style. I hope you enjoy watching it come together as much as I enjoyed building it.
Keep an eye out for helpful tips along the way. This video is packed with them to help make this build easier.
Grab the printable building plans here: woodshop-diaries.myshopify.co...
Check out more project details, tips, and information here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/how-t...
Side note: I called this a Lowboy Console at the beginning of the video and, honestly, I thought "lowboy" just referred to a shorter-than-usual console (since this one is only 20" tall). But I've since looked up the definition and I think it technically has to have drawers to be considered a "lowboy." I mean...at the end of the day, who cares what you call it. But just in case anyone wants to correct me, don't worry. I've corrected myself before you got the chance HA!

I remember pieces of furniture, like your build, back in the 1950’s and 1960’s but I remember them as having sliding doors. But with doors closed yours and the ones I remember look the same. I still am amazed that you don’t use clamps to hold pieces in place while you screw them together.

I really, really love how this turned out!!! The design is so beautiful as well as the plywood you used. I'm not a fan of using glue with pocket holes either unless it's especially necessary. When I make projects it's nice to be able to take them apart to fix/replace an area that gets damaged later or correct a mistake during the assembly. Thanks for another great video Shara!

Shara, that console turned out fantastic. I wondered about the exposed edges but you are right, they make a nice design feature. I screwed a sectional couch together for an apartment we once lived in. When we moved I unscrewed it and used the wood for many more projects. However, I go through a lot of glue so I don't claim to be a purest one way or the other. I think an arsenal of methods is the best way to go as circumstances can vary. I love it when you start throwing in some angles on your builds. Hugs and kisses to Lucy and Bubby. Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙂

Came out great! I don’t get why you wouldn’t just sell the pieces rather than keep to reuse the wood. That leaves a bunch of parts you can’t reuse and they have finish on them now. I would think your neighborhood Facebook Marketplace people would love a famous KZreadr piece as well!

I used to sell things here and there and it’s actually more profitable to recycle the wood than to sell it locally. Plus selling opens a whole other can of worms and people aren’t always pleasant to deal with. I occasionally donate pieces, but selling them just isn’t worth the hassle.

Awesome project i understand making stuff for content but these pieces are amazing and im sure there are people out there that would love to own some of these pieces. Maybe consider selling them?

I love modern looking furniture and this looks fairly straight forward to build. I'm wondering how you would think it would look if the edging of the outer box was mitered inwards at 45 degrees?

I’m not sure I understand your question? If you edge banded it and mitered the edge banding on the front to match the sides? If that’s what you mean, that’s exactly how I’d do it. I wouldn’t have mitered corners and not miter the edge banding too.

@@WoodshopDiaries Sorry but my question wasn't clear. I was asking about mitering the plywood edges of the outside box that you see looking at it from the front. So you would cut the front edge of the three boards that make up the outside box at a 45 deg angle. So when you're looking straight at the finished piece the outside edges would be angled inward. So your just giving the edges a "softer" look. Hope that makes sense. I'm not talking about any edge banding. I really like the look of the exposed plywood edge.

@@WoodshopDiaries My daughter wants me to build her a dresser type thing with drawers and shelves so I think I might use this as a basis for the design. It will be more of a vertical build though. I'm so glad I can watch your videos to get help especially with the drawers.

Glue is messy and when I mess something up (way too often), it can't be undone. Use it only when really necessary. Thanks for the confirmation that it is okay to skip the glue on pocket hole joinery :)

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 However, to make it even more mid century make the 'doors' hinge at the bottom so they flip open from the top.

Just found your channel this week. Had to say I love the way you present your projects. Also, I learned a number of things today: how to use a speed square to set angles, door building using the hinge jig, etc. I'm wondering how heavy that piece is? 3/4" plywood sides AND back panel!! Yikes. Thanks again for such great content.

So glad you’re enjoying the content! Thanks so much for following along and checking it out! To answer your question, it’s heavy! I can lift and move it myself (so it’s not crazy heavy) but it’s a sheet and a half of plywood so probably around 120-130 lbs 🤷‍♀️

What if you made this out of 1/2" instead? Save money and it would be lighter.

You could. You might save a few bucks (very little-the price savings between 1/2” and 3/4” is pretty small) but it would be lighter if that was the main concern. However, I don’t think 1/2” material would do well spanning this width without an additional center support, though. I don’t use 1/2” material in my projects for several reasons (a few: they require different size screws, hardware and edge banding, and it’s not suitable for every situation).

Hi Shara, love the console. Would it be possible to make with only the wrap around frame? Great inspiration for a tv unit I plan to build but i dont want it to be too heavy.

Sure! It would require some modifications, obviously, but can definitely be made without the “double layer” if you wanted.
