How to build a foundry out of a propane tank in under 5 minutes: back yard Foundry

This is one way to build a foundry out of a 20lb propane tank.
I got my supplies from Smith-sharp fire brick supply in Minneapolis.
I cannot recommend any sources online because I didn’t use those products.
I used Mizzou refractory cement. It’s the strongest you can find. It was $50 for a 50lb bag where I got it at Smith-Sharp Fire brick supply.
In the video I used z-wash. If I was going to build it today I would use greenpatch-421

Nice job. I'm working on something similar. A 40 gallon pressure tank, cut the same way, similar hinge, but using aircrete for the refractory. Finishing today, taken several pours, built my own foam gun. Using water glass for finish coat. Intended for forging , and foundry. Gas nozzle assembled and finished, tested. It's heavier than I wanted. It's mounted on a cast off heavy duty barbecue grill frame. Thanks for sharing.

It just makes things more challenging. Bigger furnace means heavier crucibles, so you might have to do a two man pour. Get big enough and you need hydraulics to lift it. And those foil suits to repel the heat. But you could make one out of an old keg or hot water heater and that would be ok.

Griz Lee as for refractory cement I bought a 50lb bag for about 50$. You can use only refractory cement if you just put a tube in the middle and fill the tank with about 2-3 inches of cement. That way you wouldn’t need the ceramic insulation. But make sure it’s rated for over 3000 degrees if you do. As for how many ft of ceramic insulation? I can’t remember but you will want the higher rated stuff. I think mine is rated for 2800 degrees, and you will need enough to fit the circumstance of the tank, plus the width of the lid. I bought mine by the foot at a fire brick store. If you don’t have one you will have to by a roll of pre sized packages. So just pick one you know will have enough.

No. It’s not the best idea to do that because the cement is such a “heat sink”. It soaks up the heat and takes so much longer for for chamber to get up to melting temp. The time and extra fuel used each melt isn’t worth it. But technically you can do it that way. I just wouldn’t recommend it.

@@TitusGalliusMontanus yes that is an option. I like to coat my wool with “mineral Z wash” that’s what my local fire brick store calls it. Green patch 421 works well to coat it too. But still you want them to be thin. I’ve also seen people slide in a cardboard cement footing and pour in refractory cement in the space between the footing and the wool. That’s another way to do it. In the end there are many ways to get it to work. It’s just a question of what is best.

Depends on what you get. I got a nice stainless steel one for $100. You can find them cheaper and you can build them much cheaper yourself if you are comfortable with that kind of thing.

I was under the impression that the ceramic insulation that causes lung cancer and all sorts of other bad juju had to be completely coated, especially on the sides where it had been cut. The idea being that the fibers that can float around are on the cut edges more than on the factory cut sides.

A foundry is a place that melts and casts metal. This is a furnace for a foundry. But a lot of people call the furnace itself a foundry by mistake. I should have referred to it as a furnace.
