Question: Franky do you actually think you can build the deck by yourself just in 3 days? The best answer ever said: "If I slow down."
Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds kzread.infoUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.
Be sure to use 2x10 joist hangers when framing 2x10 floor joist not 2x4 hangers as shown in this video. Also be sure to use 3" galvanized nails for the toe nailed locations of the joist hangers . On another note, on an elevated deck the balusters should be fastened on the inside note outside for additional safety as well as using more than one screw on each at the top of each baluster . Through time when the pressure treated lumber dries the screws can loosen and therefore if a child ever were to lean against them they could pop off.

So, much for Franklins years of experience lol great information.
Been slowly converting everything to Makita for about a year now. Excellent tools.
Thanks another really, really useful video. I've done lots of jobs that I would not attempted if I didn't watch your videos so thanks. Nick.
Thanks for the video, I built my 17x11 deck 2 years ago and now I know how to get my corners flat. Never thought of planing them. Thanks again for the help.
"Do you think you can be done in three day?" "If I slow down" ha I love that.

Wow looks great. I’d say he’s built a few decks in his day. Awesome set of tools.
This is so weird I just started installing decks and this video comes out...Thank you!
The best I have seen so far and thank you Frankie
If Frankie wants to head to NY for 3 days... happy to send a plane ticket. You all make it look too easy. Great tips across the build...Thank you.
Great video! I built one years ago and wish I had seen this years ago before I did. I'll be building another one on a different house this summer and will use a lot of Frankie's tips. Thank you for posting!
Stan, great video. My opinion on fastening the hand rail posts is to drill through and bolt them, with the decks I have built I have made the hand rail posts have extra support to fasten to. ( I'm not sure how to describe it. It's something my pawpaw taught me a long time ago.)

That sounds like a good way to do it Lance
That Makita drill is also my favorite drill. I love that this whole thing was built with makita's lol
Holly heck those maketta drils are tough !!!!! Thanks!!!!
Simple and great project, thanks guys! 😊
Thanks. Lots of great tips I will use to build mine.
Great video. Makita works great too (drill combo, circular saw)
Nice deck, well built! Frankie would be a joy to work with, no talking, just work....."getter done!" ....13

I could watch videos all day of Frankie just building stuff
Nice video! One thing I prefer when building a deck is building a bridge for the joists to sit on rather than nailing the joists to the face plate. Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome and thanks for the input!
Idk about you but here in Illinois the inspector is very particular about galvanized nails in your joist hanger
It's a pretty damn good job overall - looks great. I'm just wondering why you don't use a post stirrup for the posts though, just to raise it up off the ground a bit? I know it's treated timber, but still, I imagine a galvanized post stirrup would be stronger and more durable than a bit of rebar and the post resting directly on the concrete, for, what, $10-20 total extra cost.
Thank you Frankie
This video was brought to you by Makita..
Dzien kuje Stanley. Another great, helpful video.
Great job and love Makita . My dream power tool
Wish you were available to do my deck. You’re awesome!!! Palm Desert California is waiting for you. Vacation and work all in one!!!
That-Makita- was a great video. Makita. Can't wait to-Makita- use this to help build -Makita- my own deck.
that drill did some BACK TO THE FUTURE
Really liked the video. Would have liked to seen washers on the lag bolts, longer joist hangers, and more attention to the flashing and weatherproofing on ledger board at the early stage. I've been looking for a 12in compound sliding saw. I'm going to rethink Makita because of the set back on the slide. Seems nicer when transporting too.

Great video, other than baseplates between the sonotube (and due to local codes, we use bigfoots), we do them pretty much the same way here. Have you done much work with the plastic decking?
I love watching Frankie work and learning from your Channel. Though I really would have liked to sane vinyl flashing over the top of that ledger board tucked underneath aluminum if possible

Overall great tips. Thanks! Use simpson strong tie screws with the joist hanger brackets. They are hardened and designed to transfer the load. Also use proper sized joist hangers (not 2x4 hangers). Use stucco spacers (deck spacers) when attaching the ledger to stucco so water drains out.

Hey Eric! Not sure you'll get a chance to read this but I might need to install a ledger on my stucco house. I've read varying opinions on whether or not you can install a ledger over top stucco or if you have to take out the stucco. Do you have any opinions? If you can attach the ledger on top of the stucco with spacers, as mentioned, how do you know where the framing is so you are attaching the ledger to something solid? Thanks so much. Rebuilding my rotted deck and doing it myself. Appreciate the awesome DIY and carpentry communities.

@@theprofessordad9456 I used deck ledger spacers and ledger lock screws. I pre drilled the stucco and put a bit of polyurethane sealant in the holes for good measure. On the deck framing tops I used an adhesive backed tape to protect the top from rot. Worked well just wish I used heavy duty decking on top than just redwood 1x4 slats, it's been a year in front and 2 years in the back and they could use a re-staining. Good luck! I'm just a diy'er who watched a ton of deck videos and read up on local codes in Los Angeles for decks. Good news is city's have a lot of diy guides for decks.

@@eschrader Thanks so much for answering Eric! I'll look up those deck ledger spacer and lock screw options. When you predrilled the stucco, how did you know where to drill? In other words, does it matter? I was under the assumption that stucco itself is not structural and that you need to have the ledger attached to something structural like the underlying framing. If that's the case, I'm not sure where that is being concealed by the stucco. I'm actually down in Orange County! As for those diy guides from the city, is there a specific website you found those? Thanks again!

@@theprofessordad9456 I have a basement so I drilled a small test hole I patched later, looked for light on the other side and measured to get the stud layout. Only issue is some of that side of the house has termite rot so it wasn't as strong as I liked so I sistered a 2x4 to the bad stud then put the ledger lock screw into the good wood.
Wow i have built decks before and have numerous brands of tools not brand loyal the tool for the job, Bosch electric start plunge router, with a guide accessory few DeWALT tools, line of Milwaukee cordless, Porter Cable belt sander has plenty of power and is beefy I plan to investigate the Makita Sliding miter I have Makita portable table saw cuts through pressure treated with ease have even used to build 10k 3pc entertainment center in the day and more But i agree with Dirt Monkee he knows his stuff, every deck i have done has been custom to of seen this video would of made life easier! Don't screw joist hangers. Nails have more sheer strength. You also can't attach a ledger to stucco. You must attach directly to the rim joist of the house. Don't notch guard rail posts, it weakens them.
@avid0g
5 жыл бұрын
No, the rim joist can be ripped out of the house when the deck collapses. Code requires solid connections to the interior joists (that have far more fasteners into floor sheathing). Or sometimes the sill plate or top plate are acceptable, since a collapsing deck will likely not leverage them out. Rail posts need connection to something stronger than the perimeter joist, like surrounding the post with blocking and tying the post to interior joists. Again, perimeter joists have bent outwards - spilling people over the failed railing.

Another option is to ditch the hangers and toe-"nail" (/screw) five-inch TimberLok's

Any tips on how to locate studs behind stucco ? I’m planning on putting ledger board over stucco for patio cover project. Thanks
nice video.. but few areas I would change is , use a CB44 for post base, I think hangers being used are to short, I would use the hangers for length of the joists, and I personally would run all the way thru a full 1/2" bolt with nut and washer for handrail post at corners ... other than that , cool video
Nasty construction.
Great videos keep up the good work

Have you seen the handrail post method Samurai Carpenter uses? Super clean, looks great, no notching. Extra work, Maybe just a couple minutes for Frankie, but the end result looks great.
how did you mount the ledger onto the stucco siding? I mean how did you find the studs under the stucco?

Ask Frankie on his thoughts about notching out the 4x4 to set the 2x4? More less for a continuous run on the 2x4.
Looks incredibly sturdy. Could rest a forklift on that dang thing. Good Job.

Bought a house year ago and the deck had been very neglected prior to my purchase. It's's going to need a new set of deck boards. Watching how you guys build this makes me realize how messed up the original construction of my deck is, it's going to be a long summer trying to fix everything.

I am looking for info on building my own deck. I saw several places that the wood had splits in it...even after pre-drilling. Would you continue using the board with splits or replace it?
Hey man, tico nails in your joist hangers and you can do an over lap joint at the corners of your railing . Ur mitres will shrink and leave a gap over time
