    Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds kzread.infoUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. Be sure to use 2x10 joist hangers when framing 2x10 floor joist not 2x4 hangers as shown in this video. Also be sure to use 3" galvanized nails for the toe nailed locations of the joist hangers . On another note, on an elevated deck the balusters should be fastened on the inside note outside for additional safety as well as using more than one screw on each at the top of each baluster . Through time when the pressure treated lumber dries the screws can loosen and therefore if a child ever were to lean against them they could pop off.

    It's a pretty damn good job overall - looks great. I'm just wondering why you don't use a post stirrup for the posts though, just to raise it up off the ground a bit? I know it's treated timber, but still, I imagine a galvanized post stirrup would be stronger and more durable than a bit of rebar and the post resting directly on the concrete, for, what, $10-20 total extra cost.

    Hey Eric! Not sure you'll get a chance to read this but I might need to install a ledger on my stucco house. I've read varying opinions on whether or not you can install a ledger over top stucco or if you have to take out the stucco. Do you have any opinions? If you can attach the ledger on top of the stucco with spacers, as mentioned, how do you know where the framing is so you are attaching the ledger to something solid? Thanks so much. Rebuilding my rotted deck and doing it myself. Appreciate the awesome DIY and carpentry communities.

  • @eschrader

    @eschrader

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@theprofessordad9456 I used deck ledger spacers and ledger lock screws. I pre drilled the stucco and put a bit of polyurethane sealant in the holes for good measure. On the deck framing tops I used an adhesive backed tape to protect the top from rot. Worked well just wish I used heavy duty decking on top than just redwood 1x4 slats, it's been a year in front and 2 years in the back and they could use a re-staining. Good luck! I'm just a diy'er who watched a ton of deck videos and read up on local codes in Los Angeles for decks. Good news is city's have a lot of diy guides for decks.

  • @theprofessordad9456

    @theprofessordad9456

    @@eschrader Thanks so much for answering Eric! I'll look up those deck ledger spacer and lock screw options. When you predrilled the stucco, how did you know where to drill? In other words, does it matter? I was under the assumption that stucco itself is not structural and that you need to have the ledger attached to something structural like the underlying framing. If that's the case, I'm not sure where that is being concealed by the stucco. I'm actually down in Orange County! As for those diy guides from the city, is there a specific website you found those? Thanks again!

    @@theprofessordad9456 I have a basement so I drilled a small test hole I patched later, looked for light on the other side and measured to get the stud layout. Only issue is some of that side of the house has termite rot so it wasn't as strong as I liked so I sistered a 2x4 to the bad stud then put the ledger lock screw into the good wood.

    Don't screw joist hangers. Nails have more sheer strength. You also can't attach a ledger to stucco. You must attach directly to the rim joist of the house. Don't notch guard rail posts, it weakens them.

  • @avid0g

    @avid0g

    5 жыл бұрын

    No, the rim joist can be ripped out of the house when the deck collapses. Code requires solid connections to the interior joists (that have far more fasteners into floor sheathing). Or sometimes the sill plate or top plate are acceptable, since a collapsing deck will likely not leverage them out. Rail posts need connection to something stronger than the perimeter joist, like surrounding the post with blocking and tying the post to interior joists. Again, perimeter joists have bent outwards - spilling people over the failed railing.
