How To Breathe Properly When Learning To Swim As An Adult

Breath is life. I can’t breathe properly when learning to swim. Nothing brings up panic, fear, and anxiety faster than these powerful sentences.
If you do not know how to get air easily every single time you need it then of course you would feel fearful.
Tune in to start your learning to swim journey with confidence and trust that you can get air easily any time you want. If you want to feel freedom in the water, learning to breathe properly is an essential first step.
And as it turns out it is much simpler than you may think. After all, you breathe all the time…even as you read this. You know how to do it extremely well.
Today’s breathing video focuses on a common mistake that new swimmers and teacher make when working with the adult beginner swimmer. The hint has to do with blowing bubbles.
We will take your confidence and trust in yourself into the water and build on it there. This way you can learn to swim with confidence and joy.
Orca Swim School is the only school in the Pacific Northwest that teaches adults how to become free in the deep water through the Miracle Swimming Method. This channel has videos from classes, questions and answers about what it means to swim, and other things that we think you might enjoy.

A very interesting way to look at exhaling in water and making it an exercise in mindfulness . Thank you. I have not done any swimming for nearly a year now, even though I continue watch lots of swimming videos. I have been learning proper swimming techniques ‘on-and-off’, as an adult, for about 6 years. And, the one thing that I continue struggle with is breathing. From your post I feel that I have been blowing bubbles rather than exhaling normally as I would if I were walking or running -without any real tension or deliberate effort to breath. Thank for the reminder to bring mindfulness to my breathing in water. I will try it!

I've taken swimming lessons as a teen and as an adult. My biggest obstacle has been a lack of confidence in my ability to breath at the right time. But no teacher ever focused on breath management/control. I once took a breath too soon and swallowed a bunch of water. I haven't been back. I don't have to time my breaths to stand up while breathing air. So, when I master the rhythm of water-breathing, I will be much more comfortable in any amount of water. The basic techniques of swimming are not as difficult.

I hope you found this helpful in your journey! It never feels good to get a mouth full of water when you want air. Just know even very good swimmers have this happen on occasion. This is where the mental steps are just as important as the physical ones. Good luck!

I like how you've broken this down. Many swimming instructors don't take into consideration what's going on in the head of a person who is learning to swim.

It can be confusing. The key is to understand why you are blowing bubbles, knowing it's ok to not blow them and how to manage your air with calm confidence.

Great video/s though would appreciate if you just get to the point instead of repeating one idea over and over. Much appreciated!
