HOW TO BLOW OUT VS SILK PRESS CURLY HAIR (which one is best for your hair type?)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This time of year just so happens to be the BEST time to switch up and smooth out your naturally wavy, curly, and coily hair if you’re going to do it because when the weather cools down, humidity drops and your style can last WAY better than in the summer. But what is going to be better for your hair? A silk press, or a blowout? Hi, I’m Manes by mell, your mane curly girl mell I’m a pro stylist and curl enthusiast but I don't judge you for wanting to straighten out your locks, I just want you to do it right! So today I’m hair to share the difference between a silk press and a blowout and explain which technique will be best for your hair texture if it is fine, medium, or coarse. This is a damage-free zone and we’re going to go over all the pros, cons, everything we want to without further ado, lets get into it!

I learned from a Dominican stylist years ago to tie the hair in a high bun, wrap the end of your hair in and secure with a pin. No touch ups needed 🙂

I silk press my 3c hair about once a month. I thought I’d leave some tips for tighter curls for anyone in the comments that cares. I use the Its a ten keratin leave in and Paul Mitchell super skinny serum on damp hair then I blow dry. Then I flat iron. I spray each section with Paul Mitchell Neuro Heat protectant before I pass the iron through. This gives that silky shiny look that lasts a week! The 410 setting is best for tighter curls too, and an iron with titanium plates gives the sleekest look.

Definitely team Blow Out! When I straighten my hair out, because of my fine texture, it always looks like I don’t have that much hair. I love the voluptuous, bouncy curls from a blow out. Haven’t tried the Velcro rollers yet but need to grab some of those.

I've only ever straightened my hair a handful of times, the last time over 15 yrs ago. I have fine-ish strands, with VERY fine strands around my face. That's also my curliest section nowadays but back then, my front had a looser curl. However, my front pieces would NOT remain straight for more than a few hours. I could never figure out why that was. I always just blamed humidity (I'm in FL), but I didn't know anything about fine hair and hadn't even heard about porosity back then.... But now I'm getting the answers as to why my fine, highpo strands just didn't take to straightening...interesting as always!! Thanks Mell!

I can't even express to you Mel, how helpful and informative your videos are! I have straightened my hair for almost 20 years.. I was 13 when I started, with a METAL cheapo iron that burned my hair to a reddish brown color from my natural deep brown LMAO. This video is a perfect breakdown of the differences between the 2, and no shaming for wearing our curls straight! I adore you chica! 💖🌻

I used to be silk pressin' on the weekly, but have been wearing my hair curly full time for the past three years. I only ever have a blow-out done when I go to the hairdresser once every six months so that they can make sure they've cut my hair properly. I do want to get into blow-outs and possibly silk pressing again because I like having variety. We're pretty lucky that we can have that variety 😊

Using the Velcro rollers is genius. Am I the odd one? I’ve never wanted to do a blowout or silk press. I just love my curls. I’m also kind of afraid people will say they like the blowout better & I’ll feel insecure. 😂 I did flat iron it once on a dare to only send a pic to one friend. It was so not me. She laughed so hard.

Not that I am any kind of expert, but I would like to share my methods. I do start with hair that has been given the full spa treatment: scalp treatment, cleanse, deep condition, and oil or leave in conditioner. Then I braid it tightly, sometimes one braid sometimes two, while it's still wet and let it air dry. This reduces the amount of heat that I need to use on my hair but trains the hair to lay smooth-ish. When dry I use another heat treatment and flat iron or a 1-1/2" curling iron for that blow out big wave look. My hair type is 3B and I have a waist length V cut. I have Hashimotos and a partial Thyroidectomy so I struggle with breakage along my hairline and try to be gentle to keep my length.. I only use a blow dryer when I am touching up and using dry shampoo. I thought it was worth mentioning this little tweak can help someone. 🤷🏽‍♀️

This video is right on time. I gave myself a silk press before Thanksgiving and it lasted two days before starting to friz. That's a record because I too live in Florida. "What's that saying-, "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes." I would like tips on how to maintain both techniques; do you touch up with the flat iron if it starts to revert or do you scrap it and wash and reset your hair. I love both looks by the way. I like the sleek look for a more tailored look and the blow out for the body. The blow out can make fine hair like mine look full, while the silk press can give it a more polished finish. Favorite tip-, the blowout technique with the round brush however I fear I would get the brush stuck while trying this 😂

Some great tips here i can share with my stylist if I ever decide to do another blowout or silk press. My problem is that I’m super picky about how my blowouts & silk presses. I want a very specific look at the end of the service. I want to leave my appointment looking like my hair grew out of my head straight. I know this is the main culprit to why my hair was damaged like it was. So I have abstained from straightening my hair because I hate frizzy volume and when my silk press isn’t sleek and shiny. I rather not inflict the damage on my fine color treated hair to preserve my go to curly hair looks.

I just received my Dyson blow dryer. I have used it twice, it's marvelous. I don't need to leave my house air drying my curls or with a wet head to work anymore. I ended up doing the refurbished as it was cheaper than the original new priced Dyson. I am good with second hand. And the pay in 4 by PayPal is awesome as well.

I've been doing old school roller sets on my long fine hair. It's the same texture as yours. I love it and it feels stronger. Could you do a tutorial?

Happy texture tuesday! I've been waiting for the new vid to drop! Ik this is off topic but I have a question mell, my scalp has been hurting a lot these days and I'm not sure why, it hurts like someone has pulled on my hair but I'm not doing any hairstyles that would hurt my scalp. I noticed it's been hurting when I wrap my hair in a scarf at night but it makes no sense since I havent been pulling on my hair or anything when I put it in a scarf. Do you know any reasons why I could be getting scalp pain? Thanks!

Love the blow out side. For me, this one is better. I find that a silk press never lasts on me as my hair just decides to curl up on its own. But if I do the blow out with just a hint of curl, I can rock it for a week with no issues. Now I need to get the huge velcro rollers that is genius.

Thank you for the informative video and for explaining and illustrating the difference between a blowout and blowdrying hair!! One question: can't Velcro rollers tear the hair, no matter how carefully you remove them? Thanks in advance!

OMG YES! Thank you! Now I know how to straighten my hair when I need too! during winter season , curls will be loose & style ♥️🌙 Crazy thing when I do straighten my hair , can’t really do blow dryer. I have sensitive scalp, plus super oily depends on weather temperature 🤒. i always wait 30mins after deep clean wash before straighten. No idea why it’s super heavy after straighten verse having nature curls?👀

I like doing a blowout look on my wavy hair. I use the Dyson Airwrap to achieve it. I only use my straighteners to do waves these days or to straighten my bangs!

I love both and thanks for explaining the different techniques. Will you always roller set a blowout? I thought a blowout was; blow dry hair after wash and condition, then wrap hair. How do you preserve both styles?

I used to be a flat iron/silk press girl. Now Im loving the curls and occasionally straighten. Im not coordinated to blow out my hair lol. Last time I straightened my hair, co workers wondered where I was that day! They thought a new girl was at my desk lol great video as always! ❤️

I am a lazy girl, so I blow dry my hair with the diffuser on low then use a flat iron. You'll use less heat with then fuel with the flat iron since you'll just be going over it once, maybe twice. Plus you'll get to keep the volume of the diffuser.

I got my hair blown out not too long ago and the results didn't even last the bus ride home. My hair is just too curly I guess. Watching you do both styles here, I can see I would not be able to do either myself LOL. I decided I want to buy a straight/body wave wig instead. This way I don't have to worry about humidity or rain, damage, nor having to not wash the perimeter of my face for days so I don't wet my edges (and dang widow's peak!)!!
