Thanks for the tutorial!, I’m wondering if you’ve noticed a large difference with just using a single photograph and creating 3-5 different exposures with the curves adjustment. I rarely take bracketed photographs and found the D800 has enough dynamic range to pull this off. I guess my question is have you found it worth while to take bracketed photographs,cheers

Excellent tutorial, I'm just learning about luminosity masks so this was perfect for me. One question, when sharpening with the high pass filter how do you select the amount you choose? Is it based on the image quality, or pixel amount at all? Thanks.

Hi Gary. I'm glad that you like the tutorial! About sharpening, yes it depends of image resolution. But you need to experiment with different amount on your images. For 16 or 24MP images, try first with small amount, something between 0.5 and 2 pixels.

I think by copying the brightness 3 (the brightest part) copy and invert it would select everything that is dark in comparsion to the brightest part (which is everything else). Please correct me if i'm wrong.

I learn so much thanks, and it's free! I started with ps3.5 adult education class back in the late 80's early 90's. my favorite versions were ps6 and then cs3 when I got my first digital camera and now I'm learning the latest version slowly CC6. Your making it a pleasure, thanks again. I downloaded the tutorial exercise file. I'm guessing because its a smaller file than what your working on the luminosity selections were bigger. you make a couple of guick moves which I couldn't figure out; How your mask started out in black,(ctrl I) that took me about an hour to figure out. How you quickly hide the mask to view without the mask (shift click on the mask) another hour and How you view the mask and not the image at the end when your doing your sharpening (alt click on the mask) had to read the comments here to get that answer. I spent about 5 hrs stopping and going back and forth between my photoshop and your tutorial with a break in between. I learned about masks 20 years ago and have never used them since. So that's why I thought I should actually try your tutorial. You never mention how or why the mask selection is a luminosity mask. So when you make a selection with cntrl & click on the layer is it always a luminosity selection? Different than if I created the mask shape with a lasso and then converted the selection into a mask?

Great video mate. I am trying to learn how to do this effectively without going overboard. My biggest issue is I get confused when there are so many layers and masks. Just need more practice I suppose. Keep the vids coming.

Hi Lórien, thanks for subscribe! I used Burn tool to darken the shadows only, but of course you can use black brush too, just need to be more carful not to paint on highlights. With burn tool and shadows mode on, you paint only on darkest parts of the image. You can do the same with black brush and opacity blending mode. There are always multiple wyas to do the same thing in photoshop.

Robert Yes, you need 2, 3, 4 or how many photos you need for all exposures and then you blend it in this way. You can use bracketing for that, or just manually control exposure.

Hi Nemanja, great tutorial thank you! Just curious, do you know where one would gain access to exterior/interior raw photos to practice retouching with? I'm a portrait photographer and retoucher and I have an opportunity to work with this amazing architectural photographer but I have nothing to practice on in case he gives me a retouch test. Already tried Flickr, Model Mayhem, and every other stock photo imaging site. Having zero luck. Thanks!

Hey! Thanks for a good tutorial. One thing confuses me; when you make selections and then paint in white on your masks (around 7.00) to reveal the layer, it seems like the white affects large parts (whole upper half) of the mask and not just your selected areas. What am I missing here? To me it seems like the selections make no difference? Hope someone can help :)

Hi there. I understand what confuses you. It seems that whole upper half is completely white, but it is not. Layer mask icon in video are too small to see it right. In the description there are link to exercise files. Download it and try it for yourself, and you will see that the selected part is only affected. Remember that all what is bright (highlights) in the image is selected. Hope this helps.

eko0071 The dotted lines representing the selection is not accurate - it does not display the full selection. So, when he paints, it will therefore seem like he is painting outside the narrow selection displayed by Photoshop. This is because the actual selection is very fine and detailed with varying degrees of transparency. Photoshop can't display these fine details with the dotted line.

Hi! When I CTRL + click on the second layers (DSCF9470.jpg) RGB channel, I end up with the bigger selection than the one shown in the tutorial. I can't reproduce the same selection with any of the layers. Any idea why? :)

Yes, the layers are in same exact order, the bottom one has no mask at all (deleted), and each layer above it has black mask on it.

I'm a beginner and I thought this part should be exactly the same. At least I'm glad I was wright about that :) e a da se prebacim na malo poznatiji jezik :D palo mi je na pamet da bi to mogla biti razlika između MAC i PC verzije (malo nategnuto, al tko zna). To mi je palo na pamet zato što kad bih išao napraviti masku od te RGB selekcije, selekcija bi bila obojana crno, pa moram ručno u Channel Options prebaciti Color Indicates na Masked Areas i onda je ok. Pa reko očito postoje neke male razlike (ja nisam ništa mijenjao defaultne postavke pošto još nemam potrebe). Inače Respect veliki za tvoje radove... baš VAU radiš i malo me zbedira kad uopće ne mogu pojmiti kako to :D

dxage Ne verujem da je zbog MAC-a Radio sam na oba i nikad nije bilo razlike. Verovatno u nekim drugim stvarima se krije resenje. Ali ovako napamet ne znam šta je. Kada napraviš selekciju i kad klikneš da napraviš masku od nje, mora da napravi masku.

+Amitabh Mukherjee Layers in channels are alpha channels. They are selection base on a luminosity. With their help I can create layer masks to blend everything into nice exposure. Hope this helps.

I was lost on this video completely..... I watched both videos on this and still I am lost.... I have a photo that was shot of a group of kids standing in front of a very large window, so as you can imagine, the window to outside is so bright and the kids are really dark.... I’m wanting to darken that area outside the window and lighten the kids.... what is my best method for doing this? I did play around in Lr with it but it just looks so fake.....

Cool as each of your tuts 👍👍👍. Yeah, in opposite to normal HDR and how HDR software is raping the images, this is the real thing 🤙. May I ask where from you have all of this cool short cut hints you use e.g. for the channel tasks to decrease the high light selection for Light 2? Are they somewhere documented? Didn't find such a documentation yet. At last pls let me ask the nerd question: What for you made Shadow 1 and 2? Is this just your standard procedure, even if you don't use this masks? Or just I didn't get it in the video?

Watch for when he selects and deselects things, he doesn't mention it a couple of times and that makes a big difference. Also his original luminosity selection is a lot smaller and so his second one is as well, I think that is due to a lower down load resolution than the image he is working on. Also his painting in the mask seems smaller because of the selection mask size as well and I'm guessing that has to do with the resolution as well. And he doesn't mention brush sharpness or smoothing parameters. In the end I liked my image more than his, which I found cold in the foreground but his sun set and sky blue saturation was way nicer.

I'm starting to get the hang of it....but I took some shots in the mountains recently and I'm running into some halo effect where the mountains meet the sky.

Love your channel and your tutorials. They are incredibly useful and easy to follow. But this tutorial is quite confusing and very hard to follow. I find it much easier to use HDR as there is no need to create these luninoisty masks (and I still have no idea on how to create them). Sorry. But I eagerly await future tutorials from you...

Hey, you lost me at the beginning when at every layer you have a layer mask that is black and you make it visible or not with a click. When you do that there is a red X on the layer and it is deactivated. You didn't said how you made those layer apply. Sorry but I am new in the layer business :)

haidukul You can Shift-click on the Layer Mask thumbnail in the layers panel to turn off or disable the mask. You'll see a red X appear over the mask icon in the Layers panel. The mask is actually still there but it's disabled. Shift-click on it again to enable it.
