    Hey Nathan! I really appreciate all these videos, they’ve been so helpful to me and my adventure in real estate photography! Anyways, I’ve been trying to speed up my workflow once I get back to the computer to edit, and was wondering if you have any shortcuts setup in Lightroom to open as layers in photoshop? I haven’t been able to figure out how to do this on Windows but have seen it be done on Mac. Thanks for all your help man!

    Thanks! ALT-P then E then O then O. It opens the Photo menu, selects "Edit In", and by pressing O twice it selects "Open as Layers in Photoshop". I cover stuff like this throughout my books, especially #1 and #2, here's a link to the series: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078NLRKNM?ref_=series_rw_dp_labf

    Thanks as always Nathan. I'm wondering why this would be better than using multiple exposures though ? And manually blending. I like to drop blue exposure(for skies) in the camera raw colours tab also.

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    @NathanCoolPhoto

    Thanks! Great question. The difference here is mainly twofold: First, this technique is more accurate to address exact areas affected by exposure whereas blending different exposures requires manual control and will overlap into unwanted areas. Quite often that is fine for buildings, but in cases like this it allows more precision. Second, you can adjust more than just exposure with Luminosity masks since you can adjust tonality with curves layers, levels with levels layers, saturation in these selected areas with saturation layers, etc. And of course this is done with just a single exposure.

    Great tutorial as always Nathan! I’ve often wondered if you have a bracketed (3) set of images for interiors is there a way to use luminosity masked to make a selection of the highlights and / or darks to them paint in with the exposure from other layers?! For instance in ambient shots typically the windows and around are blown out. But then take a properly exposed shot for exterior exposure and blend that with interior?! I know this can be down with window pull method, but just wondering if can be done how would that technique look. It’s my understanding that Mike Kelley’s images are now mostly comprised of ambient exposures (little to no alternate lights) which when viewed, I’m baffled if that is the case. I appreciate any responses you provide.

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    @NathanCoolPhoto

    Thanks Todd. Great question. Luminosity masking can definitely be applied to other exposures that are bracketed. There are some advantages though to the approach I show in this video as you only need a single image, and by using a curves -- or other masked adjustment -- layer(s) you can control not just exposure (like from the bracketed shots) but also tonality and other PS adjustments (from other masked adjustment layers) in the specific areas detected for the luminosity values/regions. For views outside, I still recommend the Darken-mode window pull technique I show in my books and other videos...it's super simple, fast, and accurate.

    Thanks for this, Nathan. Is there an application for luminosity masks for dealing with windows for interior shots? I use your flambient method with window pulls for some of my business, and ambient only for other business. It would be great to be able to use luminosity masks to be able to deal with window adjustments, but I have not come across a way that makes them look natural. Thanks!

    Hi Dave, I haven't found a need for this with Window Pulls, I just use the Darken-mode technique for that. But, I could see where this could pull in some dynamic range, but the darken-mode window pull is very accurate in ensuring that you don't bleed outside the lines.

    Just ordered your lighting book to round out my collection. That's the one area I'm really struggling with on interiors. Getting even light throughout a room, color casts and speeding up my post processes are the things I have to improve upon before going full-time at this.

    Great tutorial, with the dynamic range available in the newer cameras and the ability to push raw photos, I assume using this technique is better than bracketing for simpler scenes such as this one? Not quite sure this would work as well for say a sunset or twilight shot. Keep up the great stuff

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    @NathanCoolPhoto

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! And great questions. On your first question: If you're shooting RAW then this shouldn't be an issue unless you're using a very low end camera, but even lower end cameras have enough DR to push/crush curves to some extent; however, you can also apply this technique to multiple exposures. For example, instead of applying the Luminosity mask to a Curves layer, just apply it to a mask of another layer/shot from a bracket (i.e. the +1 or -1 in a bracket). On your second question, this technique is actually used quite a bit by landscape photographers, so it works great for sunset and twilight shots.

    I'm still struggling with color casts from warm lightbulbs, especially on white ceilings. My ceilings never seem to have a consistent white color. I feel like my flash settings are good so I think it's my post processing. I have ordered your advanced editing paperback and it should arrive tomorrow. Does your lighting book or any others deal with this problem or does your editing book go over this issue?

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    @NathanCoolPhoto

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Steven, there could be a number of things you may be doing incorrectly, so it is possible that no "one" thing would answer your question. To understand exactly what you're up against I'd have to see what you are doing to be able to help you fix your issue. It could be something very simple, but either way all problems can be fixed if I can find the root of what is actually going on. Buying my books is one thing, but you may be looking in the wrong place for the right answer. My recommendation is to have a private remote session with me where I can review your work, discuss your process with you, and come up with solutions for you for shooting, lighting, and editing as well. You can email me for more info at Nathan@NathanCoolPhoto.com

    Hi nathan! What would you think about using this technique for a backlit house if you do not have a strong enough light? Also do you think this would work in an action button?

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    @NathanCoolPhoto

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question. It could definitely help on backlit houses since the Luminosity masks can really narrow in on the highlights. However, for backlit houses I tend to do sky swaps. Still, it is definitely doable, and worth a try.

    So quick question for the group. This is the first time that I have ever heard of changing RAW files to Tiff using OEM software. WHY?? Maybe this is the solution to a big problem that I am having. I shoot Sony with a Tamron 17-28. This lens profile was just added to lightroom recently. If I merge a bracket in LR I have no problems keeping the lens profile, but once I take two or more photos into PS I lose the lens profile and I am back to trying to adjust everything manual. Could this be my problem. I have really only thought of a Tiff file as a save to edit later file.

    Hi Philip, 3rd party software has no knowledge of proprietary sensor information, so Adobe will never be able to 100% decode/debayer any RAW file. I talk about this throughout my REP books, and here's a video that can help explain it as well: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIqEx6x7kqu0pbQ.html

    Do you prefer this method over blending and using the brush like you do in your exterior book (Composite Exposure) Chapter

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    @NathanCoolPhoto

    4 жыл бұрын

    I use both, depending on the situation. Most of the time I do the method from the exterior book. I use luminosity masking mostly for toning down highlights in hard to edit areas; for instance, mottled light from tree leaves, and other such areas where a complete area is not clearly defined for standard masking.

    So, I've now read all of your books except the business techniques book which is probably where this question is answered. Lol. I'll still ask though. My question is if you think a supra key is necessary? I have read that many real estate photographers don't have one but the first big time client I "almost" had, said they have never hired anyone who didnt have one because they don't have the time to meet me at every home. Was this just a rare situation or to many real estate agents feel this way?

  • @NathanCoolPhoto

    My clients leave lockboxes with combo codes, which are used by all of their vendors, including me :) They also have supras but those are for realtors, not vendors.
