How to bend objects correctly in Blender 2.8x

In this tutorial video, I want to show you how to use the new “BEND” modifier feature that exists in Blender 2.8x which is part of the “SIMPLE DEFORM” modifier. One of the most important things to know when using the bend feature is the correlation between the ROTATIONAL AXIS and the WORKING AXIS. Without this basic knowledge, you’ll get into trouble sooner or later when trying to bend objects in Blender.
In this tutorial, I also explain why you shouldn't use the "limits" feature and how to work around it, which basically using an empty object and the vertex group feature.
I hope this short tutorial can be helpful. Happy Blending!

    Blender is amazing tool, but some features like this should be simplified so that users don't have to struggle learning how to use a "simple deform".

    the thing is there are several ways to achieve that same task. From using bezier curves or grease pencil obect, then convert to mesh, or using the modifiers, at the end its all about practice as with most software. the more you practice, the more you figure out ways to increase your workflow. Comparing to maybe 3 years ago ,blender has come a long way in being user friendly..and its FREE lol

    @@bezoro2008 I've been using Blender for 7 almost 8 years now and you're entirely wrong. A tool should make the artist's job easier, not the other way around. If you look at Maya's deform tools you would see immediately how they are significantly more robust. Blender should've adapted to them long ago. Your comparison between math which is factual science to using a tool is fundamentally wrong (not to mention that if we're being technical, math *does* have simplifications; it's called expressions and formulas). Being in this community for long enough it is so unbelievably annoying to see people attempt to absolve Blender of any shortcomings. It's a tool like any other, my personal choice in software for many reasons, but it has faults and they will never be fixed if we justify their existence.

    it could be very cool if modifiers can be visible (like latice ) objects, with fields options to deform object vertices when they encounter the modifiers fields in a more predictable way, even maybe multiple objects.

    Great tutorial, thanks for helping demystify this modifier :-) There seems to be a bug with the modifier, at least in v2.82 : If you start off with the plane in its original orientation - Then in edit mode select all and rotate Y by 90 degrees - Then rotate again minus 90 degrees (i.e. back to where it was), the modifier screws the geometry up and it resembles a mangled folding curtain.

    So of course I found this AFTER figuring it mostly out for myself. I swear you're the only person making tutorials who actually understands how this works. Everybody else just claims you need to use "trial and error", or stick to keeping everything along the X-axis. But no, it's perfectly clear and no guesswork is involved, you just need to learn which axis is the working axis for which rotational one. I mean, I understand that Blender can't bend an XY plane around the X or Y axis because it's ambiguous which way we would want the result to bend, and Blender can't read our mind. But this is still bad design because it's unintuitive and has no good visual indicators nor feedback when it doesn't work, which probably explains why most people never use this "simple" modifier. But it's not random either, of course, and once one realizes why Blender does what it does, it becomes easier. I used an arrow empty (which shows the local axis) while experimenting, which helped a lot.

    Agreed. I was trying to reproduce a simple Cinema4D bending effect (shown here: blenderartists.org/t/c4d-like-bend-deformer/1146668 ) in Blender and I could only be partially successful by using curve deform. It felt like coding with 1s and 0s (and it was destructive and less flexible too). After viewing this helpful video I only decided that Blender's bending tool is really far from being practical.

    Awesome video thanks. I have to agree with the last couple of comments though. It seems devs are thinking about devs and not joe bloggs in the street that wants to use this awesome software for everyday use. I make and sell furniture and using materials that are bent is one of my main USP's, so having a software that is easy to use without a degree in programming is paramount to me.

  • @lazygardens

    @lazygardens

    Unfortunately, "easy to use" software seldom has features like this, because the process is inherently complex. If you need it bad enough, you take the time to learn enough to get it working. Look for oither tutorials on bending, because there are several ways to bent your materials and some may be easier for you.
