How to Be Sad
There is such pressure on us to be cheerful. And yet in order properly to be content, we need to learn, sometimes, the art of being constructively in touch with our sadder, more melancholy feelings.

It's a lovely name! also the name of a great book that is named after its main character. I might be blabbering but you should read it. It's written by Jean Anouillh, it deals with the subject of sadness in the first few acts which I think is really appropriate.

i love how intelligent people always think they are unhappy because they are so "smart" they "see the world as it really is" unhappyness has nothing to do with intelligence. It is a mental attitude. Stop lying to yourself

Youre right. But i think its mostly intelligent people falling for this illusion. at the end of the day intelligence has nothing to to with happiness. I know very smart people very unhappy and unable to see the ways in which they are lying to themselfes. on the other hand i know very "dumb" people very selfreflective and happy. Its what you make out of it :)
That's all I wanted. Some space for myself where I could reconcile with my feelings. But stupid relatives never left me alone. I shall never be like them.

Never take sadness for granted. Learn to recognise and respect it, within yourself and others. Not just to be happy in life, but to move forward in life.
I dislike people like Freya, because they seemingly choose to ignore/refuse to accept that life is shitty sometimes and it's ok to be pissed or sad about that. I find behaviour like that naive. Like a small child closing its ears and yelling "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALA" Edit: I didn't mean to insult people, who were like Freya due to beeing risen that way by their parents and other reasons. I refered to people, who think that things like sadness (or depression, anxieties for that matter) were not real or a sign of weakness. If you can't help beeing "fakingly jolly" like Freya, I understand. Sorry for that misconception.

to be honest, I have been manically jolly before, but not as annoying as Freya. Sometime I just accept that life is shitty, that sometime it's just simply that no one really wants to be my friend and that I have to try to be happy with what I have right now

What you just said falls under the "fallacy of relative privation". Just because there are people who have worse problems than me, doesn't mean my problems are meaningless. This doesn't mean you are wrong, but I still have the right to be sad sometimes. I don't go out that much anyway, so I won't "suck" out other peoples joy.
@anaju3595
7 жыл бұрын
I see your point, and I was just like that before I first got into depression. After that, I changed a lot and I know what a bubbly person like Freya thinks. "What should I do?" "I'm gonna try to tell them stuff I know they like." "I can't let them think about what made them sad or else they WILL be sad." Now, I'm more into Ben's side. It's ok to be sad, it's something we have to go through. "Someone who doesn't suffer will never know how to fight". The best thing to do if someone is sad is show them they can trust you, ask them what's wrong and, if they don't want to say, just stay by their side. You don't even have to be close friends, just giving them a shoulder to cry on is enough.
Reminds me of Inside Out. This is basically its plot. :)

To experience the highs in life you have to be able to endure the lows.
i am sad all the time. it is a constant feeling for me, it never goes away. i think happiness is an illusion
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT AND REAL
actually I started losing my feelings lately.. and I missed these feelings.. happiness.. love or even sadness..
This is exactly the video I needed. Family and Friends are always telling me that I only experience joy and happiness and cannot imagine being sad - but they never think of the possibility that I'm hiding other emotions in fear of getting hurt.
Amazing art, music, narrative... style! I must say it makes my soul tingle with sad and happy vibrations. Love it. Thank you!
'Some of you say, "Joy is greater thar sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater." But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.' Kahlil Gibran - On Joy and Sorrow

That happens a lot when I'm tired and rundown, which can really sap your hope. So sleep earlier, see if it helps. It did for me on a daily basis.
I really think I needed this. I'm a master of pushing away negative emotions and acting as though they don't exist. This technique worked for years, but I think it's time for me to grow up and except the negatives and the positives and learn to accepts all parts of being human.
You just helped me so much by explaining that tiny bit why pushing problems aside is bad.

I like being sad. It inspires me. Unfortunately, I am mostly anxious these days...
Holy shit thankyou just thething i need, im crying of joynow thankyouu
in my experience apathy is sadness rationed for an expected infinite period at the tiniest proportion possible
This video really came to me at the right time and is very helpful. My grandfather unexpectedly passed away a couple of days ago and despite this I was forced to continue attending school. I had to pretend as if I was happy and I pushed all my feelings of sadness aside, only to have them ball up and make it much harder to accept what had happened. But after venting my emotions and letting myself cry, though I still feel a lot of pain, I am movingn towards feeling truly better
I always comment your videos the same thing but these short films rock! Whenever I share your videos on social media I feel extremely proud. Keep going mates!
I'm so happy about this video!
How can I be "Sad" when I've already been sad.
I started crying uncontrollably after watching this. I never realized it but it explains so much
People who are used to being distracted from their sadness need to perform the service on others. Most touching moment in this video for me is the "what did I do wrong?" moment. Poor girl!
I think I've gotten *too good* at this
happy 17. of may
Honestly i just gave up on happiness, its hard for me to feel, so I just decided to ignore it, say I'm bad and horrible for every mistake I've made. And that's my life now.
This hit me too hard... and made me kinda sad, but happy at the same time. It has given me some clairvoyance over myself... Thanks

sadness is created by unfulfilled expectations - so try to eliminate as many 'unecessary' expectations as possible and make others understand that they have 'no right' to expect anything from you. this is a very hard route, since almost everyone in our 'modern' society believes that one must be better, stronger, faster, richer and prettier but actually they are all just behaving like donkeys trying to reach the carrot on the stick... so - if you really want the sadness to fade, you will find a way to do it!

I respectfully disagree. People have a right to expect to be realistically treated with kindness, care and respect, especially by those with whom we are in intimate relationships. That is part and parcel of being a mammal in a social setting. Whilst we can't force or control people to get these basic needs met, we can and should expect them, and if these needs are not met by specific people, we should go and find others who are willing to engage in a real relationship, where all people present are attempting to meet these most basic of needs: kindness, care and respect.

@Simeon I absolutely see your point and I do agree, that you should move on or away from anyone, who is not treating you respectfully - those people sadly do make one sick at heart... but asking anyone to treat you with 'kindness' or even 'care' is way too much to ask for - except of a few very special people in your life and even those might be the ones who might hurt you the most one day! it's not 'realistic' to expect. it's more 'realistic' to accept life like it is - full of people who care about no one but themself in the long run... try to see it this way: as long as you expect things, you are still believing in (fairy) tales told to you when you were a child. accepting the harsh reality is not fun but teaches you how to 'hold your ground' in bad times and might give you the opportunity to help some other people the way out of sadness (and worse things) some day...
Great video! So simple and yet so deep. Thank you for this, School of Life!

This is very true. Although it’s so hard to get over the numbness and emptiness and actually *feel* the sadness....

Great video, lots of accurate information and insight
Worth coming back to often, great video!
I often come across people with attitudes similar to Freya's, especially on social websites. I don't talk to people who ignore facts, but I accept the way they think. It is however very rude and condescending to tell someone that they can't be sad, especially when they didn't talk to you in the first place. Also, good video! It helped me understand some things!
What a beautifully considered insight into all of us!
I need exactly this
loved the style of this video

I love the illustrations on this one

Amazing reflection!
Anyone remember the movie "inside out"? Where Joy always try to stop sadness from getting too close on the controller, yet sadness is as much as an important emotion to build a person as described in climax, where Riley returned home to her parents and started crying and feeling sorry because she just was sad of the situation on them moving from a different state.
One can dissect sadness to its truthful root and deal with it from a logical and pragmatic point of view!
you are right happiness and sadness are complementary to each other
I love her ring!
