There is such pressure on us to be cheerful. And yet in order properly to be content, we need to learn, sometimes, the art of being constructively in touch with our sadder, more melancholy feelings.

    It's a lovely name! also the name of a great book that is named after its main character. I might be blabbering but you should read it. It's written by Jean Anouillh, it deals with the subject of sadness in the first few acts which I think is really appropriate.

Its what you make out of it :)

    I dislike people like Freya, because they seemingly choose to ignore/refuse to accept that life is shitty sometimes and it's ok to be pissed or sad about that. I find behaviour like that naive. Like a small child closing its ears and yelling "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALA" Edit: I didn't mean to insult people, who were like Freya due to beeing risen that way by their parents and other reasons. I refered to people, who think that things like sadness (or depression, anxieties for that matter) were not real or a sign of weakness. If you can't help beeing "fakingly jolly" like Freya, I understand. Sorry for that misconception.

    What you just said falls under the "fallacy of relative privation". Just because there are people who have worse problems than me, doesn't mean my problems are meaningless. This doesn't mean you are wrong, but I still have the right to be sad sometimes. I don't go out that much anyway, so I won't "suck" out other peoples joy.

  • @anaju3595

    @anaju3595

    I see your point, and I was just like that before I first got into depression. After that, I changed a lot and I know what a bubbly person like Freya thinks. "What should I do?" "I'm gonna try to tell them stuff I know they like." "I can't let them think about what made them sad or else they WILL be sad." Now, I'm more into Ben's side. It's ok to be sad, it's something we have to go through. "Someone who doesn't suffer will never know how to fight". The best thing to do if someone is sad is show them they can trust you, ask them what's wrong and, if they don't want to say, just stay by their side. You don't even have to be close friends, just giving them a shoulder to cry on is enough.

I had to pretend as if I was happy and I pushed all my feelings of sadness aside, only to have them ball up and make it much harder to accept what had happened. But after venting my emotions and letting myself cry, though I still feel a lot of pain, I am movingn towards feeling truly better

    sadness is created by unfulfilled expectations - so try to eliminate as many 'unecessary' expectations as possible and make others understand that they have 'no right' to expect anything from you. this is a very hard route, since almost everyone in our 'modern' society believes that one must be better, stronger, faster, richer and prettier but actually they are all just behaving like donkeys trying to reach the carrot on the stick... so - if you really want the sadness to fade, you will find a way to do it!

    I respectfully disagree. People have a right to expect to be realistically treated with kindness, care and respect, especially by those with whom we are in intimate relationships. That is part and parcel of being a mammal in a social setting. Whilst we can't force or control people to get these basic needs met, we can and should expect them, and if these needs are not met by specific people, we should go and find others who are willing to engage in a real relationship, where all people present are attempting to meet these most basic of needs: kindness, care and respect.

    @Simeon I absolutely see your point and I do agree, that you should move on or away from anyone, who is not treating you respectfully - those people sadly do make one sick at heart... but asking anyone to treat you with 'kindness' or even 'care' is way too much to ask for - except of a few very special people in your life and even those might be the ones who might hurt you the most one day! it's not 'realistic' to expect. it's more 'realistic' to accept life like it is - full of people who care about no one but themself in the long run... try to see it this way: as long as you expect things, you are still believing in (fairy) tales told to you when you were a child. accepting the harsh reality is not fun but teaches you how to 'hold your ground' in bad times and might give you the opportunity to help some other people the way out of sadness (and worse things) some day...

    That's NOT the saddest movie. The saddest movie is the movie of the kid who dies of AIDS in the 1980's. Based on true events.

    the film that made me cry the most is "la vita è bella", about a dad trying to make the life of his son a game so he doesn't understand how sad it is to be in a ww2 concentration camp, but Titanic is more famous so.. Could you tell me the name of that film?

    I often come across people with attitudes similar to Freya's, especially on social websites. I don't talk to people who ignore facts, but I accept the way they think. It is however very rude and condescending to tell someone that they can't be sad, especially when they didn't talk to you in the first place. Also, good video! It helped me understand some things!

    Anyone remember the movie "inside out"? Where Joy always try to stop sadness from getting too close on the controller, yet sadness is as much as an important emotion to build a person as described in climax, where Riley returned home to her parents and started crying and feeling sorry because she just was sad of the situation on them moving from a different state.
