Kudos for the brilliant approach of #4 USE YOUR SCREEN TO STOKE YOUR NEGATIVE EMOTIONS (about things over which you have no control or influence). I am so proud of you and I don't even know you. 💜 Also kudos on cleaning your whole house. Much better than sitting idle in a dirty house and not even knowing if you are even capable of cleaning your house! (Ok, maybe that last part was just me)

I'm quite happy and am feeling a lot better than I was before - thanks for the video. I think portraying it as 'do this to maximise sadness' rather than 'don't do this to be happy' makes the message a lot more palatable and lets it sink in easier

Matthew Taylor both paying and not paying rent have advantages. Depending how much you pay you can be left with very little money so you are unable to do anything, plus work can leave you exhausted so you won't do anything anyway. Not paying rent leaves you without a weekly goal "make this much money", it doesn't force you to get a job which is a distraction and most of the time provides human interaction, you are also not paying for your own basic needs which can make you feel worthless.

Some more pointers: true misery doesn’t come from constantly torturing yourself. Your brain will adapt to anything as long as it’s consistent. Feed it just enough hope to have its longings crushed every so often and you’ll never feel a moment’s reprieve.

0:20 #1 live a sedentary lifestyle and don't go outside much. 0:57 #2 Have an irregular sleep cycle for example never be consistent with your waking and sleeping time. 1:50 3# Maximus your screen time. 2:30 4# Feel anxiety and fear over things you have no control or influence over, being well informed while doing nothing and if you decide to contribute make sure it's meaningless. The things you care about could be a reason to leave your house and take meaningful connections with the people around you. 3:26 #5 To reach goals they must be Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Responsible, Time-Bounded.Instead set your brain on V.A.P.I.D. goals which stands for Vague, Amorphous, irrelevant, pie in the sky, delayed.Make the goal and path unclear.if you have motivation set unrealistic goals.Try to achieve the goal whenever you want don't set deadlines. With vapid goals you will turn the productive part of your brain from a dangerous source of self-improvement that rewards every small step into a consistent nag that brates you for your failure to have already accomplished your goal every step of the way. 4:45 #6 Pursue happiness directly instead of letting it happen to you naturally. 5:23 #7 Always follow your instincts.

Don't fret over irrelevant topics and things that you can't control. If you want to do something, do it. 5. Set a clear and achievable goal. Make small consistent goals. 6. Don't search for your idea of happiness, just do what makes you happy. 7. Think things through, weigh and understand the consequences/results of your action.

I do most of these and surprisingly I'm not really miserable and even happier than ever before, I just simply REALLY enjoy being alone in my room, it feels like a little freedom of sorts, free from whatever is happening outside, and can do anything I want, before I had to go outside more often and I was always very anxious and nervous just by being around other people, vaguely hearing them about different things that I just never fully understand and just had to stay still and quiet until I could finally return home exhausted by the day

I think this is far more effective than any motivational video about success. No one wants to change up their lifestyle if what they have going for them is working. No, you may not be happy with how you are living, but you aren't dead and it could be worse. A lot of the time motivational videos talk about what actions you *can* take in order to improve your life, but not what actions you should quit doing.

@@sasin2715 From the perspective of someone who has never been depressed that may be what people think but as someone who has experienced it, it is quite different. Depression isn't about putting of goals and stuff it just means that you struggle to find the will power to do things that can be really simple such as getting out of bed, making a meal (i often missed breakfast while depressed) and you have just a constant lack of energy. It is hard to get out of depression but you just gotta hold on.

I don’t know how to set SMART goals because for my entire life, I have only ever set VAPID ones. The only reason anything ever got done was because people told me what to do. I try to sleep and wake consistently but I cannot. If I am not tired, I cannot sleep no matter how hard I try because my mind does not shut up (thanks ADHD). This video is depressing for me because it paints the image that I cannot change the course, no matter how much I wish I could. I am stuck in a whirlpool that is dragging me down.

Even if they're objectively skilled, they're not really "better" than any of us. They're us but with more money and a lot more public exposure. None of that matters in the grand scheme if you don't want it to. I like the way "you will only live in their shadow" is a bit like how this video itself works. This is why we shouldn't compare, as you mentioned originally, because it brings out these arguments which don't really open up anything new but rather just keep the same old circle going.

The reason I like videos like this more than “motivation” videos that tell you what to do is because nobody likes to be told what to do and so you’ll just watch the video and forget about it minutes later. For example, this video gives you steps on how to be unhappy and to those of us who want a happier life all we have to do is simply not do those things. It’s much easier to not do something than it is to do something. It doesn’t matter what we do, as long as we don’t do the things mentioned in this video, you’ll automatically be doing something without it feeling like a chore.

When you are old and disabled, all your close family is dead, all your friends moved away years ago, you live in a town so small that it only has one small grocery store and literally nothing to do, and you can't afford to hire a stranger to drive you an hour to the nearest town and wait around while you shop or see a movie, or whatever, then drive you an hour back - what do you do? Because of my lack of vision, I don't dare take the chance of driving more than the 3 miles to the grocery store once a week- and nobody there ever wants to take the time to chat with a stranger. The two friends I have left living in other states have their own health problems and don't feel like taking on the phone more than a few minutes maybe once a week or so. My physical limitations prevent me from doing a lot of things but I do what housework I can in order to get some exercise every couple of days. Otherwise I stay on my phone in order to get mental stimulation and not think about how depressed I am. You make it sound like everyone intentionally makes themselves miserable and don't take into account that a lot of us are victims of circumstances we either can't afford to change or are not physically able to change.
