How to be natural on camera - by expanding awareness

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm still early on my journey in front of a camera, but I wanted to share some tricks I'm using to come across more 'naturally', particularly the use of expanded awareness.
These are:
- to remain aware of the room while talking to the lens
- to notice and avoid a natural 'compression' of space between myself and the lens
- to continuously bring to mind the idea that there is a human that I'm in dialogue with

    I had strong physical reactions when you compressed the space. I got a stingy feeling in my stomach that went away when you decompressed. So amazing that energy and awareness work their ways through space and time like that. This was highly informational for me, thanks Michael!

    Yep that's it,, particularly in the solar plexus region. Incidentally that's also one of the areas where I feel a kind of pressure when someone is 'in my space' in the way I demonstrate.

    A big part of this is that the mirror neuron effect* works with video images; if the presenter is feeling tense and shut down, you'll feel it, too. (*Whether these neurons actually exist as separate neurons or not, the effect is still measurable.)

    @@oasntet super interesting. I have done similar work and experiences in other contexts (systemic coaching, for example). Can you forward me to research about the mirror neuron effect?

    @@marktani "Mirror neurons" have come to be known as the most-hyped neuroscience finding (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3898692/ which is also a good summary of what's actually been found) but there's pretty good evidence that whether or not there is a literal set of neurons devoted to this task, there are patterns that mirror things we see other people do, including mood displays (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2865077/). It's a pretty big an controversial topic, but there's at least a core of truth in there.

    Expanding your awareness is very liberating... By focusing on nothingness and space you begin to be aware of everything... The story in the head subsides and the self dissolves purely.. life becomes light and problem/pain free😘😘😘

    I’m being 100% serious here. I wonder is it comes across in subtle phrasing . . a DM phrased too aggressively vs one from expanded awareness. Humans are nothing is not good at entrainment

    This is fantastic! Someone recommended it during Cam Hauser's PTYA session yesterday and I've had it open in a tab since then. If only I'd watched it BEFORE recording my homework assignment! Not to worry, it's going to be there in my mind for the next one. I'm sure your techniques help to make me feel more relaxed and therefore be more engaging. Thanks Michael!

    The three things you mentioned: external awareness, not compressing space and speaking to a person (as opposed to acting for the lens) I think can be summarised as 1.) Avoid triggering our built-in predator response by engaging aggressive eye-contact + stillness and/or silence. Think of how a snake or lion stalks their prey - you want the opposite. And 2.) being self-aware of the shared environment. Sometimes it can be good to be completely engulfed in the moment (esp. in an intimiate setting), but in a group setting hyperfocus conveys vulnerability (not paying attention), which makes triggers the listeners' anxiety so that they will take over the guard and ensure the survival of the tribe.

  • @m_ashcroft

    @m_ashcroft

    Yes it's interesting, lots of people have been raising the idea of a predation response. For me there's a mode where a predator can have an open awareness, so there's something else I need to unpack here I think.

    Hey Michael, I saw your tweet mentioning your teacher in a video titled something about magic mushrooms. He detailed a similar focusing technique where he also step-by-step enlarged his field of consciousness. So I'm curious if there is an intentional choice to what objects you choose as you're expanding your awareness. Or is it just a few items of varying distances away from you and first thing that comes to mind..? Cheers!!

  • @m_ashcroft

    @m_ashcroft

    3 жыл бұрын

    The choice of objects at certain distances and directions can be helpful to unlock a greater sense of expanded awareness (sometimes we habitually constrain ourselves or cut off certain directions of experience, like above and behind us). For me though what he's demonstrating is that more expansion = more 'freedom'. The mental move you'd be making ideally though is "everything in all directions all at once"

    Brilliant insights, Michael! For people like me, who have a hard time _not_ being performative (putting on an act, trying to make a certain impression) this video is like a second step, where step one is your video "Be yourself by not doing all the things that aren't yourself": kzread.info/dash/bejne/p65qlLOJh5vRiNI.html I think it would also be interesting to experiment with being _intentionally_ performative on camera -- not in a neurotic way but in a playful way (like kids often do for fun). Is there a way to be "naturally unnatural"?

    Looks like you shift lots of different stuff and don't try to control for the confirmation bias.

  • @m_ashcroft

    @m_ashcroft

    3 жыл бұрын

    Both of these things are true! All the things that shifted are the result of my changing my awareness, I'm not coordinating those things consciously. And no, I didn't control for confirmation bias, but that doesn't invalidate people's experiences.
