The more we take a situation and let our brains run wild with all or nothing, black and white thoughts, the more emotionally reactive we become. When we think in exaggerated ways by using terms like always, never, terrible, worst, terrible, all the time, nobody, everyone etc. we get ourselves more worked up than we need to be had we practiced thinking with more nuance, and in more accurate and responsible ways. This is a skill to learn, and in this talk I teach it to you.

Thank you. All of it, this is worthy of a relisten. Lots of truth. I feel that story (stories), playing out in mind and they're just not helpful: I get angry , hunched over, having huge blanket thoughts about my eminent demise. The stories are very real and haven't been healed -- so for me it's also like, it's all too much for me to resolve and no one will get it. But... Yeah lots of things you said spoke to me. Thanks

Hi Julia! Senior Shifter Chris here! How to Be LESS Emotionally Reactive: 3 Simple Steps This one is going back to the basics what I have learned in The Shift Society. My takeaway is I am noticing that I don’t always just stop and take a breath and just have that moment of calming myself when I am triggered or having an emotional reaction to something. I want to be more mindful of that and commit myself to work on that whenever something comes up for me in a situation. Here are my notes: *Reactive statements can be all-or-nothing or overgeneralization thinking. *Think differently to get a different reaction to feel differently. *Emotional reactive statements can exaggerate or judge the situations or people. *If you already feel bad, your brain will make us feel worse. (Like to blame others or turn against ourselves and self-pity) *Instead of being over all-or-nothing or general with your comments and villainizing a person, you can just be honest and have a clean and classy conversation. 1. Take a breath: Calm down the emotional and reactive part of your brain. 2. Noticed what was coming up: Noticed the thoughts. What are you thinking? Can you dispute your thoughts about a person or situation? Are you having all-or-nothing thinking? 3. Identify what feeling it is: I'm feeling hurt because… To anyone and everyone reading this, remember you can love and accept yourself just as you are now. ❤

I find that people often get upset with me when things don't go their way, but i avoid conflict, and try not to take responibility for other peoples feelings, so i just smile, and consider what happened to them when they were little and see their wounded inner child or ego conscienceness to be understanding but then on my own I get mad at myself and beat myself up for making mistakes...

Really upset when things don’t go as expected or as they should. That’s definitely me! When things don’t go as advertised I get really upset. My husband tells me life’s not perfect and things go wrong. He is right, but I can’t help getting upset when things don’t go as they are supposed to.

This is me or has been in the recent years. My brain works anger first, frustration, prayer and calmness then clarity. But I am very reactive to my partner who doesn’t show any sign of compassion or understanding. I’ve understood my ways and patterns and been doing so much work to heal yet if we meet a roadblock and I say even the littlest of things out of frustration there’s no mercy. I feel I’ve failed my self in the progress I’ve made overcoming my thoughts and belief systems from a child. I am now trying to journal everything in the hopes of reaching clarity before anger and frustration 🙏🏾 Thank you for your videos

Hi, Julia. What about how we make ourselves martyrs… “my sister NEVER does the dishes. I come home on the weekends to find dishes from LAST weekend still in the sink!! If I want a clean kitchen, I have to do it. If I want it done RIGHT, I have to do it.” Then o go and complain to my friends who agree with me. So I get attention. I’m recognized as the long-suffering, responsible sister. By comparison, my sister looks like an irresponsible slob. But I recognize that it’s all so petty and unhealthy. I don’t want to feel good about myself in comparison to someone else. That’s like a false positive. “She’s not a good housekeeper, it’s not as important to her as it is to me. But she’s a much better cook than I. And I love a clean kitchen, so I guess I’ll do it.” Then that’s the story (or truth) I tell myself and others, and I feel much better (at least 75% better).

Hi Julia. I was just wondering if you could apply some of your good information to someone my age group. I'm nearly 60. I love listening to you, but I feel that the situations you give as examples (young family, career, social life etc) doesn't apply to my situations. I have health issues, live alone and don't have friends. But I still experience these highly charged emotions I've suffered with most of my life. Big thanks x

Can u pls consider doing a video 4 ua parents who's kids r so enmeshed w/ culture and it's detrimental to the previously good child/mother relationship. My 27 yr old only xhild, dtr is so toxic, I walk on eggshells, I am not allowed to b near her very often because of her anxiety and hell-bent ideas of "mother, unless you deal with your issues.....or don't touch me or get in my way while I am cooking, sitting down ect" this isn't healthy and regardless of her words or thgts, how do I as the mom get resoect from my child and respond to nasty/toxic texts? My heart is broken. P.S. she believes she had a good childhood....if this was a friend or even lover,, I could diatant myself but this is my child! Help!
