I was an exterminator about 20 years ago. While this would work, the best bait I have ever used, and is an old industry trick, is bacon, but it is used in a very specific way. Tack a small raw piece of bacon and impale it on the spur on the trigger. Take the trap to where you will set it. Then take a lighter and apply flame to the bacon until the fat starts to melt out of it and the bait turns wet all over. The area will fill with the scent and you will get a hit in no time flat. There have been times I set the trap, turned to go, and before I could even get away---snap! They love it. I have never had one steal the bait. I have had them jump a shutting trap in the case of roof rats---they are known for that--but never steal the bait of melty bacon without setting it off.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for this excellent advice. The first night I set 6 traps with cheese and peanut butter and just like you said, the rat licked 3 of those traps clean without engaging the kill spring. After watching your video yesterday, I cleaned all of my traps and used the hot glue method to glue on some dog-kibble. Then I filled some empty spaces between the kibble with a tiny bit of cheese and peanut butter. I went out and set my traps again....less than an hour later, I checked my traps and sure enough....Mr. Rat met his demise! Thanks for your insight and help on this one. I am going to keep the other 5 traps active tonight in case Mr. Rat had some buddies that I didn't know about. Thanks again! You really know your trapping methods! :)

Awesome, it worked perfectly! I used dry dog food hot glued to the traps. I set 4 of them last night and already caught 2 big rats! Not only that, since the bait is glued in place, I did't loose it. Just reset the trap and it's ready for more! Great tip. I have never had luck with rats before. They always steal the bait. Not now!

Great advice to secure the bait on the trap. Rats and mice were licking the peanut butter off the 4 traps I used after I had some success catching rats, maybe they got smart. I didn't want to buy a hot glue gun, so just used DAP Rapidfuse glue (superglue is also good), quick dry, very strong, to glue almonds to the triggers and then put a dab of peanut butter on the almond. It works!

Great thanks for this vertical trap idea!!! Got one at 3am, tape the trap to a cardboard box to make it vertical. put a bottle of water inside the box to make it steady.tie a piece of bread with raisin on the trigger. dip a little sesame butter(no peanut butter on hand). put the trap in the corner, close to where the rat drop was found. got one rat in the second night after the trap was set. I doubt the bread has been dry for a while before the hit.

Bacon is MY bait of choice. I stuff a 1/2" piece under the trigger tab and 'hook' the rest over the top. They GOTTA 'pull' on it to get it away. Works every time. Good advice on securing traps so they can't be dragged off.

I hired a pest control company for a rat problem. They put out traps with peanut butter, and wouldn’t go deep into the attic. The result...no rats.. I watched this video, and followed direction. I did attach the trap to a five foot board to allow me to slide it close to the evidence of a nest....ten days later ....BAM. One dead rat.....guess I won’t need the pest control team anymore! I've found that tying the bait to the release lever will actually cause the string to get caught in the rear facing teeth of the rodent and hooking it to the base of the trap, so that when the trap spring is released and the base of the trap reacts by jumping or sliding, the string holds their teeth and head of the rodent in the target area.

Smear smooth peanut butter on a small rectangle of paper towel and roll up like a joint. Then cut into small pieces about the size of your pinky finger nail. I do a whole lot and keep them in a jar with a strip of towel soaked with vanilla essence ....that pervades the baits. Don’t add it directly as it makes the peanut butter treats crumbly so they won’t slide over the over the trap trigger. Their teeth catch on the paper towel triggering the trap. I also scatter some about the area to attract them and build up their confidence. Also.....it’s worthwhile with these Victor traps modifying them with nails driven up from underneath so they protrude just inside where the bar comes down. That prevents them escaping and makes for a cleaner kill. I also tie my traps down as suggested here.

The best bait is bread and peanut butter. Grab a chunk of wheat bread and tie it on the bait holder plate so the rodent would have to pull on the bait. Last thing to do is smear peanut butter on it. Peanut butter has a very strong scent. This method never failed me.

Modify the trap, pound 5-6 small nails in through the bottom of the trap so they point up around the bait trigger end. This is less cruel as it dispatches them quickly and they can not back out. Use gloves and I find my older weathered nasty traps work better than new ones I do oil the spring and hinges when needed. Bait, I use sticky candy (Laffy taffy, juju fruit, etc.) smeared in the hole and underneath. I firmly push a pumpkin seed onto the prong and put a bit of peanut butter on the seed, only for scent. This works pretty well and they don't really get a chance to eat the bait so I can use it more than once. I remodel houses and am amazed at the damage they can do, this is a serious problem. Can't wait to try the glue gun!

Cat food hot glued onto the plastic bait area worked on one ou t of 5 traps. The other 4 were picked clean and not set off. Maybe the plastic bait plates are less sensitive than those little metal ones in the video. Also, the weather changed-got colder-so that affected the glue, it just didn't hold. So, I will now try wiring the bait on.

I built a 4 set Rat trap with walls and a lid, based off 'Shawn Woods' ten trap design. I added the lid because I then set it in the chicken house with openings against the wall with the lid providing enough room for the rats to still go along wall and enter the traps and the chickens could not get access. Lid was long enough then hinged with scrap hinges so I could check it without moving trap. Two things I observed is; 1. some rats that were caught were totally eaten and it was like only the outside skin, legs, tail and the head that was still in the trap was all that was left. 2.; couple of rats must have pulled themselves out of the Victor traps, so I saw online where someone put nails up through the board just inside the kill bar, so i did that. Later I added a front with 1 3/4" holes so they entered the hole right on to the trip plate. They never got away after the nails and later the front. Month of November 2022 caught 29 rats. I didn't see any activity for about two weeks so I loaned trap setup to a friend and in just 3 weeks they caught 31. There were two that showed up together on game camera last night so extra traps were mounted to a board and put in hen house under a milk crate. I should get my other trap setup back on Tuesday. I had problems getting the dog food to stay hot glued onto the trip pad (Yellow plastic and another metal one.). One thing for sure; you gotta keep changing things up because they seem to get used to your setup. I did set up a bait station with cornmeal and baking soda and I found at least one dead from that. I will use wheat flour, baking soda and sugar next time. Someone else said to blow cinnamon over your traps; forgot to do that on the ones I set tonight.

One thing I do with rat traps is some you can get a ring of 1" long panel pins around the outside and other you have to do it on the inside nailed through the wood base but not interfering with the snap arm. then cut the tops of the panel pins with wire cutters leaving a nice sharp spike. When the rat is trapped they are also impelled on the trap and cannot release themselves. This will catch them by the leg or anything else in the way of the snap arm should the rat just walk over the top of it sniffing the bait. As you say use wire to secure the trap to a brick or anything the rat cannot move or drag away, although it will try if not dead. Caught between the snap arm and impelled on the nails their is little chance that rat is going anywhere else, apart from bagged and in the bin, or become dinner for it's mates. Or it's pay back time for the damage they do when you dispatch it yourself, which a find a tickle across the neck with a sharp knife does the trick a treat. However always wear rubber gloves and clean the knife.

Just make sure you warn all : husbands, sons, uncles, freeloading nephews, etc. , otherwise you will be wondering where they got the big bar-shaped bruise on the bridge of their nose ... One more that worked was "PRESS HERE for free young, un-bred females" ... Issue same warning, but possible bruise will be in a different place...

I bend the tang up a little and put a piece of tough beef jerky cross-grain under the tang and press it back down tight against the jerky. It can't be pulled loose without setting off the trap. The jerky doesn't attract the rats very well so I put a little bit of peanut butter on the jerky. They will lick the peanut butter off then set the trap off when they bite or pull on the jerky. The jerky is always still in the trap with the peanut butter licked clean. I just put a little more peanut butter on it and set it again. A small piece of green Scotch Brite pad infused with peanut butter can be substituted for the beef jerky.

I like to use greasy peanut butter and usually put a gob under the activator with a piece of popcorn on top. Our rats are very smart and if they escape a trap they will not come back. So the rat 1st gets the easy popcorn and then 2nd they will go for the peanut butter under the activator. Because their head is under the activator they don't have time to pull away.

"...if they escape a trap they will not come back". So if you set up a static/un-set trap, laced with bait; then set it 'live' the next night, and it somehow misses, what would have been the advantage of giving the free food the first night??? If they're going to get caught, they are going to get caught: doesn't matter which night it happens on!

Z-Hut, Thanks Dude, you have explained how to catch rats and I appreciate it because I thought the empty traps were the result of placing the rat traps in the wrong position where by the rats could eat the peanut butter and get away with it. I thought I had to place the trap in a funnel position leading the rat into a correct position like a professional trapper would do. Now thanks to you I know how to do it correctly. I have tied bait on before and struck out, I was using the wrong bait.

You method worked....with one modification. I had a bunch of the new style victor traps with the plastic triggers/bait hooks. It seems the plastic triggers are optimized for a certain amount of weight and adding a bunch of cheerios or nuts or whatever bait and hot glue alters the load and balance so the trigger is either too sensitive or worse you can't set the trap at all with out it springing right away. My solution was too wedge a rolled up ball of paper towel underneath the trigger. Well that worked....

I have a Rat in my attic, and at least 1 mouse in my bedroom. I see only 1-2 droppings a morning in my bedroom. I have plugged up every possible opening and cannot find a nesting place anywhere in my three room remodeled garage house. No holes under my box springs cover or under the couch cover. I did take down the attic square wood door 2 feet by 2 feet and a hundred rat droppings on it. I hear the rat almost every night in the attic. I staple gunned the entire attic square with sticky sheets with syrup and honey oats in the middle 3 inches. For two weeks I have been using sticky sheets, Rat traps and mouse traps to no avail with a variety of bait including pieces of apple tied down with wire. No luck.

Get some fresh or lightly cook bacon (you can use other meat if you object to handling pork). Put a thread through it and tie it to the hold down bar. If you are attentive enough, you can actually leave the hold down bar loose on the trigger. Rat has to yank on the bacon. Off goes the trap. I did some diabolical things in my rat catching days. It's all out.

Operator fear of rat trap. Set it "fine", after the first few self captures it's either worked out how to do this the simple way or get the children to. A relatively fine set rat trap smeared with peanut butter works well enough to get mice if they are positioned correctly (they will fit between the kill bar and bait & get missed, or caught by the tail)

OK, so we have been dealing with Rats this winter in the UK here and my rats seem to have Doctorate degrees, they have been the most clever little twats imaginable. I had been using peanut butter and they had as you described been licking the traps clean, but in SOME cases they are using things they can find to try to trigger the snap before going for the food, One of them dragged in an empty plastic water bottle to trigger the trap, then they ate the bait...
