    Excellent explanation, it makes so much sense they way you illustrated it. I found the front wheel on my bike was 5mm off centre (relative to the rear) when I measured it, which explains the pulling to the right. I got it set up straight and it's all good now.

    mine does the same thing, pulls to the right and it also goes into a death wobble when going 150+ km/h. Going to use this method tomorrow and hopefully it all works out.

    Crikey, I've been doing it right all these years. Most descriptions baffle and annoy me because they add layers of complexity that do nothing. Done this way, it's straightforward and accurate. Thanks for posting.

    Thanks - really excellent presentation for a noob to wheel alignment like myself. My bike has a vertical adjustment on the rear wheel, which can tilt the axis of the wheel from horizontal (with respect to the frame and front wheel). So this would tend to move the contact patch to the right or left (toward the higher end of the axle). I guess such an adjustment is *super* uncommon on bikes.

    Great well explained video on allignment! I performed this on my Suzuki Vstrom today using this exact procedure. It's excellent. Just to add... use very thin string ... dental Floss?... be sure the string has a clear path all along. Measure carefully....take time. Wondering now if front and rear sprockets are perfectly aligned. Most only talk about alignment of the sprockets... hmmmm

    What if the front wheel is out of alignment with handle bars. Sometime it can happen. If we put handlebar straight front wheel will not be perpendicular to handle bar.

    I have a shaft drive Yamaha Royal Star, I have setup the string and laid down behind the bike and looked down the string and I can see my right rotor sticking out about 1/2in, the left rotor is perfectly in line with the edge of the back tire. I cannot adjust my rear, I have taken the forks off and had them turned and they are not bent. I purchased another swingarm and I still have the same problem. I'm thinking it s the shaft Hub making the tire turn to the left. Any thoughts on this?

    Remember, make sure the string is the same length apart all the way to the front.

    This assumes the frame is not bent and inline. Otherwise, it'd be possible to offset the rear tire from the center line and turn both tires to find a front tire position in-line with the back and equidistant from the strings. I think first using the string method from the front tire to align the rear, then checking the front tire offset with strings drawn from the back tire will show you the total offset left in the frame when the tires are aligned as good as they can be from adjusting only the rear axle blocks.

    Super helpful. What's the best way to make sure the string is coming off the rear wheel straight? Anchor it to something and have the string just barely touch the rear wheel? Thanks

    measure width of strings at rear wheel, make sure it matches width of strings at the two objects you tie to, that means they are straight, then you will need to make sure they are at the right angle, using a speed square is easiest

    Great question. When I was making this video, I thought about this for a while as it is difficult to visualize in your head. I realized it does not matter if the bike or strings are level. I reasoned that if you replace the rear wheel with one that is bigger or smaller, you can theoretically the angle of the bike/forks, and yet this has no effect on the alignment of the rear wheel. Also, changing the angle of the strings is no different than changing the angle of the bike. I'm probably going to redo this video soon since I used a poor quality mic for the voice over. Thanks for the comment!

    great video.. my problem is that my bike tilts to the right and I have to almost pull the left handlebar in with greater and greater force as the speed of the bike increases

  • @heemlo649

    @heemlo649

    6 жыл бұрын

    Not sure if you are asking for advice, but I believe the fact that you have to pull the left handlebar is caused by the fact that the bike tilts to the right. A bike will naturally turn whichever way it is tilted, which is partly why you can ride a bike with no hands so easily. I'm not sure why it would tilt though, unless the bike is heavier on one side.

    This is good,... however it potentially could leave you with a rear tire not aligned with the frame. Should be shimming the rear to be centered with frame. Front centered with frame. Then align wheels.

  • @aragrox

    I can see why because you want the rear wheel, front and rear sprocket also straight so the chain does not flex at all. Your second sentence confuses me, whats the point in aligning the wheels is they both straight with the frame?

  • @hughduncan8128

    @hughduncan8128

    Exactly the rear tire has to be adjusted first and straight center to the frame. For that there is no shims loosen the axle nuts then normally there is adjusters on the frame to adjust the wheel. After the rear is straight check your front wheel if your front wheel is that far off chances are your shock tubes are twisted in the triple clamps. Also for the guy with the bike leaning and hard to turn you need to check that both tubes are slid into the clamps at the same height then center the front wheel.

    Many bikes are designed with an offset. It is not necessary to shim the rear to the frame unless it was designed that way.
