One of the best tips i know of is never to adjust your aim while you are down for a shot. If you need to adjust, always stand back up and approach the shot all over again. You covered this in the main, but this version is gr8 for beginners and to discipline your process!

This is easily one of the best videos on aiming I've seen. I don't consider myself a beginner anymore, but I've seen nearly every video on "aiming"/shotmaking on youtube. The premise and execution of this video is clear and better defined than the others. When someone asks "how do you aim?" I'll send them this first. So much good stuff in here that took me a while to find out the hard way.

I started playing 55 years ago, I learned that it's easier to learn from watching other players an improving your knowledge of the game than just hitting balls without studying the mechanics and fundamentals of pool. Everyone needs sometime alone on the table to work on their weaknesses, improvement always follows examination and review. Great video.

My progress was slow many years ago as a kid in the pool hall because I didn't know how to practice. I would do just what he said. Mistake #1: Throw the balls on the table and start shooting them in. Better to shoot one shot ten times than ten shots once. Mistake #2: I would shoot a missed shot over until I made it....once. Shoot a missed shot until you make it 5 times in a row. Mistake #3: Aim once I got down over the ball. Often my feet were in the wrong place. Get your cue stick on line and move your body to it, not the other way around. Mistake #4: I was more concerned with having a good bridge than a good stroke. Stroke is 100 times more important than your bridge. (make that 1000) Unfortunately, I didn't learn that I was doing it all wrong until I was in my 50s. Now I am trying to outrun father time relearning things correctly. It is difficult to unlearn bad habits.

Holy crap. I’ve been playing for more than 40 years. For about a 15 year period, I was pretty good. I haven’t played regularly for the last 10 years or so. When I do go, every shot now seems so difficult. I miss so many previously easy shots. Through this video, I’m learning I’ve been aiming wrong. During the window when I was good, it was all feel and I was on autopilot. Now that the feel is gone, I have to line everything up, BUT I’VE BEEN LINING UP MY AIM WRONG. It’s not easy admitting that after 40 years, but I guess that’s half the battle.

Years ago when I played in leagues and tournaments I found this booklet written by Willie Moscone in the 1950's. I was suffering from inconsistencies. I basically tore down everything I knew and followed the books advice. It took a year to "unlearn" my bad habits but I was averaging 2 more balls pocketed per round after.

As a PBIA certified instructor, BRAVO!!!!! Best explanation on the internet I have seen. I will Say this however, which is take a look at Auto Aim (aiming system created by Randy Goettlicher). if you ask me Jr’s more of an alignment system than an aiming system technically speaking (in my opinion), but If we are being real aligning perfectly on a shot IS AIMING. It cuts out many of the steps involved you have on this video, and as we all know… the less steps needed the better when it comes to this sport.

A breathe of fresh air! I would opine that the “inner game" of billiards is _head, heart, and hands._ “Heart“ for the passion and discipline for its ongoing practise and refinement; “Hands“ for the accuracy and precision of its execution; “Head“ for the understanding of principles which makes it possible to predict outcome and discriminate real progress. HAMB (Hit A Million Balls) is a worthy and necessary practise philosophy, but (just as you say) it is neither practicable nor efficient. Vector diagrams and visualization exercises combined with rules-of-thumb and special cases are similarly suboptimal in and of themselves, but both together keep the student advancing sufficiently well and sufficiently quickly to keep his/her “heart in the game.“ For instance, it is a matter of embarrassment to tell you how many years I was invested in my advancement of skill in pool before it was pointed out to me that the rebounding cue ball travels along the tangent line -- and I was a physics major in college! It´s alike to the common saying, that now that I see this, I cannot “unsee“ it. The trouble is, many advanced players (including instructors!) cannot viscerally recall ever _not_ perceiving these simple verities, or worse, denigrate its explication and demonstration, exhorting the student to instead just _feel the ball._ Additionally, there is a weird perceptual syndrome that happens when too many balls are on the table: the essential principles are harder to see. This shouldn´t be so, but nevertheless is. I think you understand this. I cannot sign off without a gratuitous quibble: “Aiming for the black“ is _not_ where the pocket “is“. For all but straight-in shots, a successfully pocketed ball involves making it as a “banked shot“ off one side or the other of the _ostensible_ pocket; indeed, part of my aim regimen is determining whether I should “error“ on the side of hitting the object ball “too“ thick or “too“ thin, by the criterion of the above principle.

When I go for a pot, I stand in alignment with the object ball and the intended pocket I will target. Once happy with the angle, maintaining a focus on that angle, I stand behind the cue ball, picture the ball's line of travel to the object ball, and in my head see the shot occurring. Once happy with that, I take position on the cue ball, keep my body still and then take the shot as best I can. Normally this leads to a pot, but not always, if I mess-up the delivery.

Hey Bob, I just wanted to leave a comment to let you know that you have helped another pool player with your no-nonsense video. It was complicated enough to be very interesting for a novice like myself but also in the same breath it was fun with some great tips that as a pool player I hadn't even thought of. So Bob thank you for the great video and hats off to you mate Cheers Brenden

Great technical analysis of how it all works. Accurate visualization is key to making the shot, as long as the delivery is consistently good. I imagine a beam going through my cue to the position of the ghost ball.

The stick lining up to the correct hit and placing tip at center ghost ball and aligning on the cue, I'm going to practice that, should up my game, will see

This video confirmed my thoughts on why I miss relatively easy shots. I rush easy shots and miss a lot. I can make a long cut pretty easily with no apparent problem. My line up on the hard shots is the difference in my sucess or failure on a shot.

This video is amazing! I’ve just started playing pool, I’m not sure if it is too soon to say but I’ve fallen in love with the game. Now, I at least know what to work on in order to get better instead of just winging it.

I just started play a few months ago with several ladies at a senior center! We have fun but most of us are new to the game. So I listened to your video a few times for it all to sink in. Ready to go and learn, and maybe help a few others, too! Great video and explanations!
