Shopping List for How to Add Childproofing to a Home:
- Cabinet latches
- Safety gate
- Outlet covers
- Television straps
Tools for How to Add Childproofing to a Home:
-Electric drill/screwdriver
-Hand screwdriver
-Wrench
Steps How to Add Childproofing to a Home:
1. For cabinet latches, place the latch where you want it on the cabinet door and the catch on the cabinet frame, and predrill holes with an electric drill.
2. Using a hand screwdriver, secure the screws included with the latch kit to the cabinets.
3. For a safety gate, find two solid points of attachment (a wall and a newel post for example). At the bottom of the stairs, a gate can be held with tension by using a wrench to tighten the sides of the gate. At the top of the stairs, use included screws to secure the gate to structure.
4. For electrical outlets, remove the existing outlet cover by loosening the center screw, and replace with a childproof outlet cover that automatically closes when not in use.
5. For a flat-screen television, attach one mounting strap to the mounting holes on the back of the television using the machine screws provided.
6. Using wood screws, attach the other mounting strap to the furniture below the television.
7. Bring the two straps together until tight.

Projects like this are why the show has a person like Kevin. He isn't a professional handyman or other profession in construction/home improvement. Just an average guy asking the questions every Do-it-yourselfer needs to ask.

If Tommy were on this job he would have built custom cabinets with built in child protection and made it look easy.

Nobody else noticed the top railing being loose when she came down the stairs? Lot of good the gate will do if the entire rail system gives way.

that top railing is held in with brackets, so if the railing does wiggle a bit its not coming loose

my 11 months old would stick her hand/fingers into the opening of those cabinets and shut it with her other hand, hurting herself then she would climb over those gates.

Yes, anchoring a small flat screen..what a game changer. So Kevin (who is nether a carpenter or an electrician) goes from a talking head to a child safety expert. Terrific. And great point kubtastic.. I actually went down a half flight of stairs having tripped over the lower bar on the gate. Luckily, my paternal instincts kicked in and I was able to save the beer I was holding. I thank God every day I did't have my baby strapped to my stomach with a tacky wool sweater.
