my husband just replaced one of three basement windows. We would never have considered doing it ourselves had we not seen your video :)

This video was extremely helpful for our recent basement window installation and I was even able to bounce a question off Jeff before proceeding. Thank you for taking the time to respond Jeff! Long story short; we received several quotes to remove a steel framed basement window that was set into the foundation when it was poured. We got quotes from several contractors in the Hamilton/GTA area ranging from $1400-$5000, and some of those quotes were just to build a new window over the old rusted garbage. Spent $300 on a mason to install a lintel, $500 to cut the old window out of the concrete, and $150 on a new vinyl basement window which I installed myself thanks to this video and Jeff's advice. Total cost = $950 and it looks a thousand times better. And most importantly, it's usable. Thanks again Jeff! Keep those DIY videos coming!

Very helpful video. Ironically, the tip about using a little blast of spry foam to repair minor drywall dings is almost more useful for me right now than the window replacement itself! I've got several dings around the house I've been putting off due to the PITA nature of cutting, filling, taping, etc, but this method looks super easy!

I would love to take your advice and not screw the frame in but domt you think the foam and seal around the frame could get dispersed over time with the frame gently moving when opening and closing? Would it not be better in the long run to secure the frame to the house foundation?

Ever try moving forward when caulking, this will force the caulk deeper into the hole, pulling backwards if you think about it only puts a thinner bead because the back of the tip laying on the surface is pulling away from the crack, moving forward you still get a nice bead but more will penetrate the opening. :-) learned this when re-cualking my boat.

Any chance you'll be putting out a video for how to replace and install more typical insert windows where you would preserve the original trim and such? I'm going to be replacing a few windows in my bedroom soon and no one has instructional videos as good as you do!

Gotta love expansion foam!!! I've held up a concrete sidewalk with foam, 5 years later, still up and holding.

May I suggest Mulco thermoplastic sealant. The best stuff I have ever used to chalk around windows and doors.

7:42 careful with that advice. Always check build codes first. I was talking with my cousins in Florida about window replacement. They said by code all windows must be secured in some fashion to the frame in order to resist hurricane force winds.

Love your videos and always check them perhaps daily but you should wear eye protection when cutting wood with a reciprocating saw above your head! I am a General Contractor.

Just remember buy your window a little smaller and then use caulking or metal flashing to finish and I am sure you will be fine.

Hey Jeff, do you have a video for installing egress window, going from a daylight to an egress to allow another bedroom in the basement. You have that video yet?

Great video! 1. Expansion foam is really strong enough to prevent that window from being kicked in? 2. Due to some inside drop ceiling and framing, I have to reduce the R.O down about 10 inches and was going to do build out a PT wood frame against the brick and concrete opening. Do I need flashing on the PT wood? Or can I just paint and caulk? Awesome channel!

The secret is to foam a small bead as close to the exterior as you can and wait till it sets up. Then foam at the point of the glass when the cold air is blocked out. This way the foams sets u[p properly and you get your R value.

If the block fills the space and you are comfortable sealing it up then why not. Glass and proper sealant can be purchased or installed.

Hi Jeff! First of all, thank you for these wonderful videos, I have gotten the courage to tackle many projects after watching your vids. I have 2 basement windows that the previous home owner replaced (and are now broken) and 2 old wood basement windows that are custom sizes (which is $$$$ to change) I was wondering if for the custom sized ones, I could somehow adjust the window opening to fit a standard size window and save all the custom size expense? If so, is it easier to go with a bigger size or a smaller size? To give you an idea, the sizes are 47in x 29in and 56in x 20.5in Thank you so much!

Mine was block on bottom & 2 sides & a 2x10 on top running length of foundation, I put a glass block window in; its my house so I just mixed up a batch of type s & went to town , cleaned it up & caulked it 2 days later, suites me lol

And where I come from they call those Mennonite safety glasses your wearing... LOL!

in that case you remove the same way. install the new window. measure to allow a gap on all sides no larger than 1/4" Then after the window is in place you can use caulking to seal the window inside and out. You can also use small trim pieces of wood prepainted on the interior if you like the look better. If you have any damage to the concrete you can use parging to resurfsace the exterior to get a really nice finish! Cheers!

Jeff, love your work! Curious if you've ever made a window in a brick house taller? I'm dealing with that no window company/contractor wants to do it. Looking to make my short windows taller to let in more light. Any thoughts? Thanks!

For anyone reading this now, use QUAD Max if you arent comfortable with just letting the gun and tip leave a nice finish. Quad Max is actually "workable" with your finger if needed. Also, WD-40 and a rag can be your best friend if you have an oops with anything like quad.

I just tell my wife that I squint when I break things. That works great, so far.

Love the idea of sliding the new window right into the space previously occupied by the old window. However, when I passed this idea by a couple of friends with more building experience, they both suggested---more on principle than anything else---that I should build a square frame for the new window. @HomeRenoVisionDIY, why didn't you build a frame for the new windows? You can, but you would be then installing a smaller window. Not to mention needed to now insulate between the wood frame and cement, AND the vinyl window and wood. Most of the time your trying not to lose over all glass area when installing new basement windows. They are small enough as it is.

But I am wondering, I see several videos saying that you need to make a lumber frame before putting in the window and I can't see the advantage in doing so. Is there really a problem with putting in a vinyl window directly into a concrete hole?

want to replace two basement windows with smaller sliders in our basement. We have a PWF foundation so what do I need to consider when doing these? I know I will be reframing for a smaller window but what about the exterior finishing? The exterior finishing around the brickmould is parging.

I plan to replace a glass bloc window about 5.75 x31.5 inch with a new 50" wide x 16 or wider awning window in order to bring sheet rock into the basement. The glass block window is attached directly to the CMU blocks without headers or other wood. Have you made a previous video about this?

Firstly, thank you very much for a very educational video. My house foundation is poured concrete and I have it gutted already. It measures 32.5" x 17". I have found windows online that measure, 32" x 16". Can I order those and fill the void with the foam? I understand you need a little gap anyways for spraying the foam in there, but I'm unsure if an inch is to much?

That was timely... I'm thinking of replacing my existing decrepit windows with glass blocks. I gather special(?) mortar is typically used, but maybe good old expandofoam would work as well. Stick with the mortar, expanding foam changes color in time and would be visible through the block.

I have a basement windows with wood frames similar to the ones in this video but there is only 2 inches of concrete above my windows with the ends of 2 floor joists sitting on top of the concrete. I would like to install new windows by ripping out all the wood the way it was done in this video but I am thinking that’s not possible, that I would have to install a wood frame for more structural support correct?

Jeff, and tips on removing a steel casement that they poured the foundation around? In hindsight I should’ve just built a casement around it, and ordered a customer sized window. Too late.

Question for you, we noticed you don't use the special blue membrane around the basement windows but on a different window you used it. Why didn't you use it on the basement window? Wasn't sure if there is a reason....

When removing corner bead from drywall I usually smack it on the hard edge. This causes the drywall compound to crack as well. This way you don’t have to pry into the drywall and break it

My basement windows have wood around them that is rotted and we assume needs replaced with the windows. I see you tear old wood out but then you don’t replace it? Does it make a difference? We’re had water problem unfortunately so trying to do things right. Thank you.

What would you do if the old window is a non standard size? Old openings are 36"x19". Custom windows are very expensive and I haven't looked for these particularly to see if they can even be made.

That's why you always make sure your opening is clear and/or do a dry fit. Also, these windows are made for aluminum cladding on the outside, and because you just used caulk, there's is a higher potential for water and ice problems in the future. I like the comment about the spray foam though, a lot of people think it's all the same and screw up what would have been a decent job.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I respectfully disagree, I am glad someone has made a decent video for homeowners though. In my experience with older windows a sloped exterior cladding really extends the life of the window and frame, and also adds an air space insulation on top of the bat or spray foam insulation, but I do understand aluminum clad and a aluminum break isn't usually available to the average Joe.

Hello, I need to replace a basement window, but can't find a window the right size to replace (it's 31½ x 20). Thinking I need to buy a smaller window to replace it, but confused how to do it. the easiest way is to get a smaller window put it in the bigger opening and try to make the spaces even from all sides. use shims and after everything is levelled and if you fell the gaps are pretty big you can use aspenite little strips with it you can plug the openings.(make them smaller) after that use foam for windows the one he uses in this video. when the foam expands you will not recognize it -it will look amazing. Do not worry it will be extremely strong and not air will penetrate I did all my 5 basement windows without any problem. good luck.

Great video! I've seen your vids before and you are always a tremendous help. I'm in the midst of replacing my basement windows and have the same situation as you illustrated...without the irritating concrete strips you had to chisel off. I was a bit worried about load bearing since the wood was rotten and I had to remove it too but you didn't mention it so I figure it's nothing to worry about. The band of concrete above my window is about 5 inches high by, of course, 8 inches thick. I've got a question. What's your opinion of using a silane based concrete sealer on the concrete before installing the window? I saw that in another video and wondered. In my case drywall will lay against some of the concrete and I thought it might be a good idea. Maybe I'm overthinking it. What do you think?

Thanks very much for the reply, I won't bother with the sealant. But I'm not sure what to do about the drywall/concrete contact. Concrete wall - 8 inches Window - 3 inches Window will be mounted 2 inches from the outside of the concrete wall as per the advice of the Window builders. That leaves me 3 inches of bare concrete on the inside of the house...there's an addition 3.5 inches of 2x4 framing. They have half inch returns on the inside of the window that fit drywall. What do you suggest? Mount the window way further back to avoid concrete to drywall contact? Put some sort of barrier between the cement and the drywall? Maybe 6 mil plastic? Thanks

I live on Lake Champlain, and we've had winds as bad as 55 knots... Is this method strong enough to hold against those winds?

I will say yes. Try kicking out(or in) a foamed in window and you will get your proof. Went through a hurricane or two here lower NY with absolutely no problem, and that was a piece of foam board just sprayed in. In florida or similar I might follow the rules and fire in a tapcon or four, but you know, after the trim etc....I think the window might break first.

G'day! I'm a little hesitant to omit the screws. Yes, drilling into the block and using tapcons is a PITA. Please confirm that you have used "just the foam" in several installations to no ill effect? Would certainly be much easier particularly with smaller basement replacements. BTW, lived 'up the Valley' for a while. Love the Capital!!

Been foaming all my life. The best test is trying to remove a window that has been foamed and not scewed. Trust me the foamed window is a much more difficult window to remove.

I always screw my windows in when there is wood. Easier to get it level and holds it until the foam dries. But yes once the foam is cured there is no more need for other supports. Just try removing one and you will see. Cheers.

No doubt about this fellows knowledge, and it's very appreciated..but have to say I'm amazed he uses a sawzall without eye protection.. I'm guessing it's simply a familiarity issue..

Great if it is handy. drywall hardener also works.

Question on the shims, you wait until the spray foam has dried and then remove and spray foam the gap that was left behind?

you leave the shims in permanently, just cut them flush

FYI, that new nozzle on the spray foam can allows you to save the left over foam in the can. Pull the yellow tip towards the can until it clicks and its closed. Ready for reuse later.

I have a couple windows that are glass that lift up like the one you replaced and a couple plexiglass sliding windows I'd like to get rid of.

I will be replacing a 35X22 bathroom window. Can I use a smaller size similar to video like 35x13. Also can you the ultra-light thin set for the shower walls.

Sure you can. yes you can on cement board however if you are using any kind of waterproof membrane |I would suggest using Mapei kerabobond T. it has similar properties to keep tile from slipping . Cheers!

When you measure the opening for new window..what exactly should i be looking for in size

depends whether or not you reframe. rough opening either way should be about 1/2" to an inch taller and wider over all than your window measurements, i like to be closer to the 1 inch for over all hight to allow for plenty of room to flash the heck out of the sill.
