I’ve looked at several homes recently which did not have enough bedrooms to fit our family size, and have often wondered what it would take to add an egress window in the basement. Great how-to video on the in’s and out’s of adding. Thanks! For those commenting on “why would someone do this”, you can’t resell a home and include the basement square footage and/or bedroom without a 2nd exit from said room/area. An egress window allows you to count both, thus increasing your homes value. Very worth it if you’re taking the time and money to finish out a basement.

Would a hatchway count? I thought egress windows were bigger. Like a standard door sized opening and stairs in the well to easily get out. My hatchway is basically the same size as this opening. We built a room in our basement and the hatchway exit is in that space, which is why I'm asking.

You made it look easy, by a quick video, and surprisingly kept the correct red flag to have professional concrete cutters for the foundation. Video appreciated, and liked.

You show the job well and explains things well. Many builders that try video design fail in these regards.

Pretty slick. I just formed footings for duplex i building. Plans include two egress windows for each unit. Thanks for your video, it sure helps to visualize my project.

Oh those look amazing. We seriously need to redo our basement. It was done when we moved in, but had a flood thank u washing machine! So all our floors were ruined. (Painted concrete)

Nice job! I'd suggest more than a few ramset nails on the PT wood (not sure how many you did) but in my basement the PT has buckled from drying out and although the windows work just fine, it makes the PT wood look ugly until I finish out the basement! Sexy saw system they used, makes it a lot better than renting a saw and freehanding that cut - possible, but lot of work!

It looks good. I might have added a second layer of flashing between the window flange and the trim. In Arizona we do that on all flanged window installs, as well as the silcone

I should have specified that I'm in Construction, and that is the process used in new construction, and generally how it is done in remodel or retrofit work. Of course there are the diy'er that may not do this. But at a trade level, you do everything you can to seal that window up.

Suggestion put the drain at dirt level. Use a good quality landscape fabric over the dirt and the drain. Then put your rock I use river rock. If the drain is higher then the dirt it fills up the space until it can exit through the drain. And I also wrap the drain and down the pipe a little. It keeps sediment out better.

I couldn't tell but he should've used perforated pipe with a dirt sleeve. That way the water level doesn't have to get all the way up the drain.

I've used ramsets for over 20 years. They are awesome!

St. Louis city has thousands of abandoned houses. They give them away if people agree to rehab them. Problem is they would probably be killed during the rehab.

Nice project. I always kind of enjoyed the darkness in basements, though. If it adds value, very worthy.

What an awesome video sir! Great job! One small thing everyone else should do is to flash on top of the flange once the nails are put in. Everything else was awesome.

I'll be helping my son do this over the summer, and I definitely take your advice and hire a team to cut the concrete.One point I would change on your install; I would have used a water based foundation mastic on the concrete before the tape, (clean concrete, mastic, dry, tape, dry, trim) and then another coat after tape then trim after it's all cured. Thanks for sharing.

I was born in 1957. I will call a Pro like you. It is worth every penny.

So a quick tip for finishing up the concrete saw cut , buy a masonry diamond tip blade for your angle grinder since your at Lowe’s buying all this other stuff . Saves on drilling and chiseling the wall I’ve found not all concrete is made the same. And because the chisel worked at your place it might not at others , and an angle crack could go the other way removing more foundation then you want lol . With the angle grinder you get a 2” depth cut to create a really nice score line for breaking the wall

We are thinking of doing this with our basement window as well. Thanks for the clear cut, concise instructions. And yes, we will be paying someone to handle that crazy- looking saw!

We are doing it to. We’ve been quoted 4500-6000 for the whole thing which is insane to me. Trying to look for any shortcuts to save us money..like digging our own hole for instance lol

@@drapermike Sounds like what I was quoted, too. Crazy. One contractor I talked to refused to even let me dig my own hole lol. I decided to take on the project myself. I am even cutting the concrete myself. Check out the cut-n-break saw. It is much less industrial and way easier to handle. Doing mine this weekend.

@@drapermike I was successful. The biggest snag for me was pushing the saw to quickly. It caused the blades to converge and bind up after 4-5" depth. Otherwise I tacked 2x4s to the wall as a template and everything went well.

I laughed so hard when you dropped the Ramset off the sill! Great video! Keep em coming Chris. Looking into a Ramset now.

7:24 "Backfill with pea stone only" then you packed clay/dirt tight against it. Hope it doesn't get soggy, then freeze. Loved the video though, very informative. I'm just a little sensitive to soak/freeze after discovering that my own window well has demonstrated that it has no drain at all. Thanks for publishing this. Enjoyed it.

FYI. Those Wellcraft Egress Well's are now $332 each piece. They are only 20 inches high so if you need 3 of them you're in for $1k. Like the video!

If I had to guess, you were having trouble with the tapcon screws because you weren't drilling deep enough holes. It helps to run the bit in and out a couple of times when you are done drilling as well to clean out dust. If dust compresses in the bottom of the hole it won't allow the screw all the way in.

Properly flashing the window and drip cap should have been installed. This was not sealed properly.

Ty for posting this. I want to add an egress window on the side of my home before basement finish and I also need to rebuild one non egress window well that is old and failing. Good info.

What is the window header situation? Great video concise and accurate, from what I can tell. Thank you.

I just subscribed after you mentioned to hire a concrete cutter. Best advice I’ve heard.

When we have done egress installs, I recommend putting the well up to the siding. When you leave it open like that, there's a lot of water that can get in.

Any thought of adding Z-flashing between the top of the window and your siding? An added defense against water running down your wall and potentially back up under the siding.

@@gordsinclair9583 it's a piece of sheet metal that is bent into the shape of a "z" that will stick out beyond the top lip of the window. It's meant to draw water away from the house/window so it won't creep back up under the siding and cause damage.

Concrete cutters are scary in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to handle and properly inspect a tool beforehand. However unrewarding, I have and can use one all day as one would use a pen. Hell, I could probably gently scratch ones itch, or samurai a mosquito with one if so inclined. You have to respect it for sure and carelessness is rewarded with missing body parts or lost life.

i dont know if you are talking about tool or tradesman, but 2 guys who came to cut my foundation to get windows installed in our basement were huge. Like imagine 2 Hulks come in and say: "Hulk saw, Hulk smash, Hulk carry pieces away." :) It was awesome!

Preservative should be applied to the ends of the pressure treated lumber when it is cut. Especially that close to the ground.

"pressure treated lumber corrodes aluminum over time" indeed it does. When I built my deck, I used vinyl flashing. Aluminum flashing is against code in my area. I could have used copper flashing, but that's much more expensive.

@@Dfpijgyt564s65sgt It was such a nice piece. I was thinking outdoor in a garden or near a fire pit. A slab like that wouldn't be practical in the dining or living room. A piece like this one would be right at home in Fred Flintstone's home. Perhaps that is my attraction to the slab. Just don't wander thru a room and stub your toe on it in the dark.

I'm surprised you didn't install a lintol of some kind, don't you have to shift the weight away from window frame so it doesn't become difficult to open especially in an emergency when you're gonna need it most?

Would it really add to the structure given you'd have to cut more out to allow for the linton? Let me know if I'm wrong, but from what I saw it doesn't seem like it'd be a good idea

in my area cost estimates were $3600, $3800, $4600. The lowest estimate told me it would cost me $2500 to do this by myself.
