How Timex Watches Are Made | The Making Of

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Timex watches are known to be high quality yet reliable and affordable. The brand has been in business since the 1800s. Insider's Fabiana Buontempo visited their headquarters in Connecticut to learn what goes into making their watches.
The art of watchmaking is often machine-based these days, but at Timex, all the watches in its new American Documents collection are handmade by watchmakers who ensure each little piece clicks into place.

    I am a huge Timex fan and collector, and am a proud American and think the American Documents watch series are beautiful, but paying $450 for a Quartz is a bit out of line. Having said that I still might do it. Yes, I'm addicted to collecting Timex. I currently own 30 plus. For the record I have nothing against Quartz watches. The watch I wear most is the Q Timex Coke Bezel. However, I own 4 Marlins and I'm glad Timex is making automatics and mechanical watches again.

    Actually the American Documents series is made of US sourced parts as well as assembled in the USA. The only part that isn't American made is the Swiss movement because according to their website "there are no watch movements made with American parts that meet out standards yet". Which is a shame, considering that when the railroads were first popping up, American watches were the go-to for accuracy.

    Just took a look at the watch on their site. $500 for a Timex? I mean sure, it's got a Swiss movement, but it's still a quartz and it's not even a sapphire crystal, they are using some sort of Gorilla glass. I think Timex has been associated with Chinese made prices for way too long to justify this price range this quickly. Price it at $200 would be more reasonable. In the $500+ price range, I would just look at something like a Hamilton Automatic

    @@FriedMuffin0 The movement is *mostly* Swiss. Just barely Swiss enough to meet the legal definition of "Swiss Movement," meaning it's a Chinese ebauch finished in Switzerland. And while the case and stem is turned in the US, the steel itself is Chinese. If you want an actual all-US made Timex, you'll have to go to eBay and find a Marlin or Mercury manufactured prior to 1980. And guess what? They're actually mechanical movements instead of quartz, and they won't run you much over $40, unlike these overpriced $500 monstrosities.

    Not weird at all since the device does tell time. A watch just simplifies the process, looks good as accessory, and a number of them(chronograph, divers, and etc) makes timing tasks/events easier than using the phone. Also there are back stories to many watch designs which are fun things to learn and appreciate.

    The "Made in America" is deceptive because they are using Swiss movements. In order words, they are using ETA and/or Sellita movements to assemble their watches. There are plenty of other watch companies around the world using generic Swiss movements for their watches and they are nothing special at all. They are more about design and marketing rather than watchmaking and mechanical engineering.

  • @FriedMuffin0

    @FriedMuffin0

    Well everything is made and assembled in America. The only thing that isn't American is the movement, which is swiss. They clearly mark it and distinguish it from one another on the dial. Maybe some day someone will make a good American made movement, but it takes a lot of time, research, and money for that.

    So they PUT DIALS and "case up" the watch. And then it's like ONLY $1500 JUST BECAUSE they spent 5 minutes assembling THE LAST BITS that are ALWAYS done by hand ANYWAY. Even in Switzerland and Japan. Nobody puts glass in NOT manually except for acrylic. Because that WON'T shatter easily and is usually reserved for digital watches. YOU WANT A REAL AMERICAN WATCH, BUY A PELTON. Bracelet all done TOTALLY in American by ONE GUY in a workshop. NO ROBOTS.
