How Time is Killing my Game
Time is the greatest enemy for any game developer. Whether it be the passing trends or someone else beating you to the finish line. Of course, games like Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, Cave Story, and Fez all went through years of long development. But is that true for games nowadays?
This might be the end for Dewdrop Dynasty, but there's still hope.

"if sacrificing my life in order to finish a little game is what it takes to be successful, I don't know that's what I want." bingo. I think this is the dilemma that most game developers face at some point in their journey.

I appreciate it. I'm excited either way. If it fails, I already have some super exciting projects I would love to tackle. (And that would have more broad appeal.)
I have been a supporter of this channel for a while now and I have to say you are one of my greatest inspirations. I really don't want this game to be given up on as it could definetly turn into something a lot bigger than it already is. I know how much work it takes to build things like this, and it's actually really nice to see the real work that goes behind it and the struggles behind the scenes. It's definetly something that any level of game developers can relate to. Yeah I completly understand the reason behind the kickstarter, and I think the main reason that it isn't getting funded as quickly as you hopes might be due to your audience is a lot of game developers that might even be in a similar boat, they may not have money to spare at the moment. I think if people who were really into video games saw these they would be a lot more willing to donate as they are spending something on what they truly care about rather than trying to help the developer make this amazing game. But, what is funded is still looking amazing thousands of people that may not even be into metroidvanias decided to donate to you directly so you can finish this project. If the kickstarter succeeds than that's amazing! But if it fails that doesn't mean your game isn't good enough, it just means that no one has seen it yet. And I think you can definetly grow in some more video game lovers into seeing the game by maybey making some videos suited and target towards, them, maybey on a separate account. I would say if the kickstarter doesn't make it, maybey try just finding that type of audience. It doesn't need to be this big fancy thing that costs money, but maybey just try posting videos more suited towards them that aren't super focused on the design process. And I would recommend maybey even using a new channel, and see what happens But even if no one does see it, this game is amazing, it has a an appealing design, the combat system and enemies are perfect, the story is great, all of the places have charm, and it has an amazing developer. One other thing, is from the content you have put out so far it might just be a little early for a kickstarter, every game shines at a different point in development, maybey sometime in the future as the game comes along, you can put another kickstarter out and see how big the audience is then. Anyways great devlog as always and I really hope you continue Dewdrop Dynasty.

Time is the most valuable resource we ever had and also our biggest enemy. Learning, working and making projects take a HUGE amount of time, and when you don't have a lot of free time (most of us) then learning/doing anything becomes really painful and time-consuming. This is even more worrying hen you try to learn/do two or more things at once (I'm starting to learng Backend Web Development and wanna start with Game Development as well, but I feel really overwhelmed).

I'm pretty surprised your project is not doing well on kickstarter, i personally loved it as soon as i saw the first video. This video is just so real and truly relatable. What you've said about burnout and the potential cost of success with indie games is so true. Like you requested, I won't donate just because I like your content and want you to succeed, I'll think of the game first. For me the hype of a game can die out of it takes too long for you to access it as a player, since the trailer came out. But its not always the same it seems to depend. My example would be Hytale that I was super super hyped about. when it got announched, but now its been years since it was first shown, so almost all hype and expectations is gone for me. I probably will play it but its risky to announce a game too early but sametime if it actually turns out amazing it will be a success at the end anyway is my guess. Seems to be a risk / reward situation for a game dev because you also want people to know about your game and if you want investors is my guess also? But you also might get that extra stress if actually getting it out quicker to keep the hype alive. Just some thought I had on this subject. Currently studying at University in Game Design & Scripting, so I'm still learning. Keep it up mate and your videos are always great 😊 and good luck everyone with your game projects!

you have a successful youtube channel with almost 100k subs. This vidéo came out less than 2h ago and already has more than 5k views. You don't need a successful kickstarter to assure you that there is a lot of people interested by your game (myself first). I work on big projects too so I really do understand that it is hard to finish this project, but really, don't focus on your kickstarter and release the game as fast as possible. This may sound selfish but really, the whole point of this video is "I don't know if it will be successful enough", bro, you already know it will be. Maybe not as much as you would like but it the first big project you're doing on you re own, it won't be the same as "Hollow Knight" or other big metroidvania. To conclude, I really hope that I can remove dewdrop dinasty from my wishlist to put it in my library. Big love again and go on we believe in you and your project

Goodgis, I think if you do a relaunch, you might be able to save it. The main problem was that there weren’t any new eyes on the project, mainly due to kickstarter completely missing the Project We Love tag. A relaunch could quite literally get the game funded. I hope that even if the game is not successful you try again.

That's a great point :D
Hey man! ever since I saw the Kickstarter campaign I was interested in the project, and it wasn't until recently that I got to play the demo, and I gotta say that was one of the best games I've played in a while! The art-style is simple yet elegant, the movement feels responsive and smooth, and the mechanics feel so good to just play and mess around. I'd really love to see this game on the Switch but at this point it doesn't seem likely, which is really sad. I haven't gotten around to funding this game but I'd really love to play it in the future. I have a single question though, what do you think the playtime would be in average?

I think KZread buried your Kickstarter video. This is my first time hearing about it, and that may be true for other subscribers? Either way, backed the project. I want to play it and you deserve to be able to finish it.

it sounds like its a really stressful release, which I'm sure every game dev feels right before the due date. But if its any solace, you're an inspiration. Creative endeavors are one of the most fulfilling things out there, and only more impressive when you realize you're just one dude with a lot of passion for video games.

most ppl say stuff without the experience to back it up. games take time to make, having a job to make money, is still time... its hard to make a game when you dont have time to work on it and money to feed your family. I'm glad your asking for help on this, know its a hard thing to do. sometimes you need others to invest their time to make something amazing. ignore the typical trolls.

Hey! I love the demo, Its just I wish I could customize my settings. I'm kinda confused with Z, X, C and arrow keys

We weren't able to polish custom keybindings before demo release. That's why we didn't include it.

I don't think the main character having a gun really fits a light-hearted pixel art game imo

Sadly I can’t donate (I’m 13 and I don’t have my own money) but I will definitely subscribe to give you a little bit of support and to keep up with the project. I’m so happy the algorithm blessed me with this video this is a very interesting game, I’ll make sure to tell all my friends about it when it comes out

Hey I’m working on a game probably around the same size as dewdrop seems to be most likely smaller and i have 2 questions one on the wheel were it shows the percentage of money for certain things one was just game dev what exactly does that mean and two where or who should I have commission my music
I havent kept up on this a ton but since you have a demo, have you asked any other content creators about showcasing your demo at all? I know fireborn does a lot of hallow knight content and likes to know new Metroid vanias.
