    Yea, but you win game jams by being as little creative as possible. Copy existing game ideas, change the character a little, and there you go. There is a reason why game jams do not play a role in pro game dev nowadays. But sure, some millennials still talk about it and it can be fun, as its own jam thing, for jammers.

To the point where even if the game is half-empty it's still feels decent and nice to play around with. Please make more of these devlogs. Also maybe experiment with separating gameplay and art to better focus on polishing these, i.e. use placeholder assets and bounding boxes and all for gameplay and levels, make up a board for story, aesthetic and visual design etc. Again everything you shown in this video is great just a bit all over the place, I'd love to see you grow as a creator :). Cheers

    I wonder how it would feel if instead of clicking to turn torches on, all the torches are already lit and you have to click them to absorb the light from them. Then you could design the majority of each map as dark and the player can click to light up the curser. This light source would be limited depending on how much of the lights you have absorbed -- like a fuel.

  • @mz_eth

    @mz_eth

    3 ай бұрын

    The tricky part there I would worry about is the player running out of fuel. I’m not sure how you’re imagining it, but sometimes in experience like that the player can recognize that they’ve messed up or the game is over before they actually lose. But it all depends on what you need this limit fuel for and how the loop plays out.

  • @dungeonmasterdave1617

    @dungeonmasterdave1617

    3 ай бұрын

    @@mz_eth the fuel source could be unlimited by either having the torches slowly refuel themselves, or in a more wacky approach you could have an NPC whose job it is to start the level traveling from beginning to end lighting the torches. If you wanted to have a certain speed element to your game then you could have this NPC move at a very fast pace and then have the torches slowly die out. As a backup, you might have several NPCs throughout the level who the player could hire or ask to light torches. This could even be trees with flaming crows and when the player dashes into the tree, it scatters the crows who then light the nearby torches. As for the second issue, let me think...

    This game shouldve been a speedrunning game with mouse coordination: each map should have complex torch click sequences which would advance the player, and you must click these torches WHILE running as the dog. The dog still loses health and there is still enemies to recover with

    Idk why, (and this idea will probably get lost in the sea of comments) but my first idea for illuminate was a literal shot in the dark. As in it's dark and the old source of light you have is a gun. The flash from firing the gun briefly illuminates the area in front of you and costs a bullet. The issue is that your ammo is limited, and you're not alone. Thought it was an interesting idea and wanted to share it.

    The way you put it seems easy to begin makig things man. You are truly inspiring. Are you all in in game development? Or are you studying/working on something else?

    This is my first year learning any game dev, so I feel like Im in the super early stages , that’s part of why I do these game jams. I spent the first half of 2023 trying to make my own binding of Isaac inspired game, but because I was so new to coding I was make so many mistakes and be forced to rewrite stuff. But with game jams I can sort of take chances and hopefully learn some core lessons, but be able to walk away from these projects. I hope it’ll get me closer to being a real indie game dev over time :)

    @@mz_eth Actually your words are much appreciated. Recently been watching Tor from Pirate Software where he talks about initiating the game dev journey. And him and you have inspired me to do it my own and to take it seriously hoping to make from a passion my life. So I wanted to thank you and to recognize your work, because you are learning so fast its incredible. If you could make a video talking about how you introduced yourself to coding and such, itll be much appreciated. Thank you again man, wish you my most sincere luck!!!!

    Since the enemies are needed to stay alive, I think that might deserve a mechanic where the enemies are either trying to hide or you have to sort of make them "attackable". Like maybe it really isn't a good fit to have them attack your character, but just simply have them be a resource that is challenging to find or get access to.

    a cool thing you couldhave done is make it more simmilar to brotato but there are tourches that go off after time, you have to illuminate them to stay alive, being in pitch black is bacicaly a death sentence in a game like brotato and the fact that you can still stun enemys! just an idea

    Sif is not even close to the first appearance of a dog holding a sword in its mouth. That's like an ancient mythological creature design, not a Dark Souls thing.
