They had nothing to lose. They bleed out each ship or they go all out and if I recall correctly, the book had the Death Star target a Star destroyer by accident and they couldn’t use the laser again. Lando said as long as they’re within close range they have to not risk knocking their own ships. Tie pilots are numerous but way less skill. Rebels are less but have more durability and skill.

YES I SAID CLOSER. Move as close as you can AND ENGAGE THOSE STAR DESTROYERS AT POINT BLANK RANGE!

The Emperor was busy focusing on trying to turn Luke at this point as well. Luke turned himself over to Vader partly so he couldn't endanger the Rebels' mission thereby keeping both Sith's focus on him.

Just cuz the Jedi can't use hatred, doesn't mean the Rebels can't.

The imperials fought the battle of Endor like it was already won, and we're doing the military equivalent of gloating and playing with their prey. The Rebels fought like the battle was still there to be won and had the added advantage of being backed into a corner with no escape. They became unroutable, while the imperials were easily shaken by morale thanks to their high initial morale making the fall so much more precarious.

To be fair the gloating came from the Emperor, not the Imperial Navy. Piett could have easily crushed the Rebel fleet if he were allowed to attack.

i think the official lore needs to point out that the Empire launched most of its Tie fighters early in the battle. Lando even says as much in the movie so i don't know why this is not mentioned elsewhere. Considering that we know that ISDs have weak anti-fighter defenses we know that if they lost most of their fighters early in the battle they would be very vulnerable to Rebel Star fighter attack- particularly if the Fighters were being supported by Cruisers. the Reason for the Victory of the Rebels at Endor should come down to: 1. The Emperor ordered the fleet to hold back but the fighters to attack 2. Imperial doctrine for engaging an Enemy Fleet is based on close co-operation between Fighters and Star Destroyers. 3. Imperial doctrine for repelling a star-fighter attack is to use Tie Fighters/Interceptors to destroy them before they can launch their Proton Torpedoes or other weaponry. 4. Most of the Imperial fleet's fighters were destroyed in the early stages of the battle when they were ordered to attack the combined Rebel fleet including its Fighters, gunships, Frigates and Corvettes- all of which are good at destroying Ties. 5. Once the Rebel Fleet attacked the Imperial II star Destroyers poor point defense systems were ineffective in destroying the shielded Rebel Star-fighters. A. Rebel escort ships have Very good anti-fighter weapons B. Ties have no shields and are not well suited to attacking large ships. C. Rebels have better and more experienced pilots than the Empire. 6. Mon Cal Cruisers shielding had been underestimated since the Rebels rarely risked them in combat. 7. Imperial Star fleet had very poor combat performance during the battle.

The Executor deserved its destruction. I don't care if all crew members aboard including Piett died, they deserved it. As the ship itself crashed into the Death Star II, and was turned into a pieces of garbage. I celebrated the destruction of both Death Star II and the Executor.

If I recall, that very same book you source went further. When Palpetine was thrown down the reactor shaft, the force influence he held over the entire Imperial fleet was lost. Top officers were behaving like cadets, and everyone became incompetent. He was supposedly the glue holding everything together. Do you remember that?

Interdictors were introduced afterwards to fill a plot hole since otherwise there would be nothing really stopping the Alliance from running away. But the intent of Lucas's vision was that the Rebels couldn't escape.

Lando and Admiral Ackbar debate breaking off the attack and Lando says they just need to give Han more time to bring the Death Star's shields down but there's nothing in the film that makes it clear that the rebel fleet can't just run away.

I'm not sure "blown out" is the correct way to look at it. Notice how the A-Wing spun so wildly out of control? More likely the winglets on the engines suffered some sort of damage and he lost all directional control, causing him to speed wildly at the Executor's bridge.

Green leader knew he didn’t have much time left so he must’ve regained enough control to aim his damaged fighter at the bridge in a last heroic effort which proved to be too much for the vessel. If you read the book Star Wars lost stars it will tell you that the super star destroyer had received major damage most notably its engines. The executor could survive without its main bridge or engines but the combination of the two plus many other damaged systems proved fatal for the massive ship.

@@shrimpy_nazeem also, the ship was flying really close to the Deathstar II and it's gravity, so there was a real lack of time to switch the flight controls to the second (hidden) bridge. The crew couldn't react fast enough an therefore the Executer crashed

@@hendrik7354 we don’t see too much of the inside of the ship during the battle. There could’ve been malfunctioning doors that prevented the crew from making it to the secondary bridge. Debris would be everywhere. Whole decks closed due to holes in the hull.

Just a slight error in that you called Green Leader's A-Wing an X-Wing. Also, in the Legends canon anyway (don't know if it's still applied to the new canon), it was said that Emperor Palpatine was also bolstering his forces using Battle Meditation and that when he was killed at the hands of Darth Vader to save Luke, it instantly wore off and that lead to a total breakdown in the chain of command and lead to a lot of (more) confusion.

HalfDemonInuyasha it didn't help that Piett,Jejerod and Vader all died at the same time and Thrawn was absent. These four had the Emperor's word and spoke for the boss. With all of them dead the other Moffs and Admirals were confused with no orders until Palleon and Sloane pulled them out. Piett was essentially the fleet commander and kept his Star Destroyers in a static formation, which made them easy prey for Rebel attacks. The Executor fell well before most of the fleet, meaning no one actually knew what to do, leading to a fish in a barrel situation.

@@bahrudinahsanuliman5294 No lol. The Rebel Fleet took down 2 Star Destroyers at Scarif. Half of the fleet had jumped into hyperspace before Vader arrived. And remember that what remained of the fleet was damaged.

I like to speculate that there would be optimal angles for bombing runs due to either shield soft spots or point defense arrangements, and the GRs were positioned to block these approaches.

The above's explanation may be correct but my other theory is they could also be a support vehicle for other ships crews that abandoned their destroyed ship. Or maybe acts to draw fire from the ISDs. Giving them other targets

In the X-Wing Miniatures Game GR-75s have strong communications and electronic warfare capabilities, which make sense considering they could be be outfitted with all kinds of modular cargo pods carrying that kind of equipment. None of this is official canon, but it makes the most sense to me.

The Awakening of the Rebellion mod for Empire at War had a novel idea for the GR-75s. The transport craft launched repair drones to nearby Rebel ships to mitigate damage. The GR-75 was packed full of the materials needed to do repairs to other ships.

By the Force, I love the Battle of Endor. In every shot, there is always so much going on, and every time I watch it, I always notice something new I never saw before going on in the background. Even 35 years later, it is still the gold standard for epic space battles, and I'm still waiting for one to top it. Great video as always, and I look forward to your next battle breakdown!

I fully agree. While some shots do have some rough elements (though these are few) it's still better than than any other space battle that has come out since (although Serenity did a pretty good job). Another element that I feel the original trilogy excelled at was the quick lines by various pilots. I don't know exactly how or why, but the way the pilots are filmed and the way they deliver their lines, makes them really believable and I am /sad/ when they get shot down. It's just not the same in the other movies since then (maybe I'm just a jaded old curmudgeon now).

Best space battle of the movies, along with Coruscant (even if it was breve) and Scarif

always enjoy a good battle breakdown. And my favorite part is Green Leader's crash into the Executor's bridge. Just that image of the second officer shouting too late as a screaming Green Leader smashes his way into the bridge taking out the flag ship of the Empire. So good😎

One could presume that the Empire learned from Scarif, and adjusted their plan. In both battles, an Imperial Shuttle was stolen, a small strike team was used to infiltrate the imperial base, and the fleet arrives shortly after. So the Empire looked at Scarif and went “okay, let’s do that again, but be ready!” But Scarif never had Ewoks. Soon as the Ewoks joined the Alliance, the ground forces more or less became an army.

See we got a New serie. VERY exited :) anyone else exited?

Keep these videos up! You have no idea how awesome they are!

I believe the Imperials should have split their fleet and attacked the rebels in a pincer formation, with the Executor commanding one side and the Pride of Tarlondia commanding the other. This would have allowed the Star Destroyers to take full advantage of their overwhelming firepower, while leaving the Death Star a clear avenue to fire without fear of needlessly striking friendly forces. No matter how good a shield is, if you have fire coming from multiple angles, its gonna collapse. This also reduces the threat of rebel star fighters slightly, as they have to split their forces to go after ties and ISDs, as well as the SSD. Oh and Eckhart, you forgot to mention there was at least one squadron of Tie Defenders present, although they weren't shown in RoTJ.

@@joshuaplotkin8826 The Emperor severely underestimated the Rebel fleet. He didn't expect them to engage the Star Destroyers but sit there like some helpless minnows while getting waxed by the Death Star. His plan would've worked if the Executor and Death Star shield didn't fall.

Given the overwhelming odds and the fact that the surprise edge the Rebels thought they had wasn't there... Closing with and "Engaging those Star Destroyers at point blank range" was an beautiful move and excellent on-your-feet thinking by Gen. Lando Calrissian's part. 🥇

Another interesting point you didn’t mention is that in the Thrawn trilogy it is explained the Imperial forced had become to reliant on “force guidance” by Palpatine to presumably increase their competence and/or morale. When Palpatine died, a lot of Imperial troops lost their morale, not just because their leader had perished, but also because he used the force to help them.

I also feel that a major contributor to the success of the rebels is that the Imperials intended to use the Death Star to destroy the rebel fleet. So they never launched their bombers. Without these heavy hitters precisely taking out ship systems, the rebels were able to last a lot longer.

I consider this battle an example of what Sun Tzu referred to as 'death ground'. By keeping the Rebel Alliance from being able to retreat, the Empire unknowingly gave them a situation where they must fight in order to survive with no way of fleeing and the Alliance would have battled with zenith more than they may normally.

if Thrawn was there the Empire would have won easily. All he had to do was say "Focus all fire on the rebel Fighters" thus destroying all fighters leaving the capital ships vulnerable. The death star still would have Blowed up but the Empire would have finished all the rebels off. INSTEAD The empire focused most of its fire on the capital ships and not the rebel fighters.

@@chadthundercock4806 Yes, and much worse at combatting ships with point defense weaponry. The TIEs should have been kept back where the ISDs could protect them by blowing up any starships that got close and where the TIEs could defend the ISDs by blowing up any fighters that got close.

Wedges face when he gets the hit on the death Star is just amazing he had to break of during the attack on the first death Star and now he got his chancee

What you missed: Sidious controlled the complete Imperial Military with telepathy, this is the real reason why the Imperial forces fled.

Retreat was the only way to keep the Fleet intact after that series of hammer blows.

Was that ever confirmed, or was it simply Thrawn's theory? I wonder if the new Canon has expanded on the Endor battle in any way.

I never really liked that idea but was it ever confirmed? I thought it was just a theory of Thrawn’s? Idk but it seems in canon that Sidious did not directly control the military during the battle. Maybe they’ll confirm it in canon but I honestly hope they don’t.

Yep. Never definitely identified, but named in the Legends book Essential Guide to Warfare, and again in the canon Rise of the Empire omnibus.

I'm not sure if interdictors being there in new canon is firmly established, and if not, it'd be a good thing to drop them, or at least have them present but not in position if they've been mentioned as present. It's more heroic (as well as established that they can) if the Rebels choose to fight rather than retreat.

Return of the Jedi was just on and so was the Battle of Endor. Love your vids Eckhart's Ladder.

VHSAlien I know the campaign is but I’m asking about multiplayer. And if that is the case well then which outcomes are canon? There’s no way all of the available hero characters and weapons in multiplayer matches is canon, so what’s the extent?

Plot Armor and Plot ammunition + Cannons of Navarone. In reality the barrage of the SDs would annihilate the majority of rebel's capital ships. But no, we have a A wing rampage... P.S. when SW fans are trying to explain why SSD get rekt, due to asteroids, which damaged the ship in ep V , or any other information, that wasnt presented in the movie, it means that they are using more imagination and effort, than in the movie itself. Thus plot armor of terrorists and traitors is stronger than logic.

How did they win? Plot armor.

I can not believe the alliance suffered almost no losses and managed to kill so many ships. I know that their star fighters are much better but there is no way that compensates for the firepower difference. Even thorough the MC-80s have strong shields and the tactic was surprising there is no way they can hold up to the fire power and kill 2 very strong ships. No matter how you look it this it has tons of plot armor. And why wasn’t the Death Star with all its weapons and tie wings able to kill a small amount of fighters. It really doesn’t matter how dumb the empire is they have just been given to much strength so that anything they do should be a win. (without plot armor of course) Great video though!

Nicholas H They did lose many ships and the rest of the alliance fleet was after the battle in no condition to fight. It has even been stated that 4 Star Destroyer's would've been enough to obliterate the remaining's of the alliance fleet. The battle of Endor was a big victory with great losses for the rebels

Legends said they lost 20 percent of the fleet and nearly 50 percent of the fighters, in Truce of Bakura sourcebook...

Nicholas H they actually suffered quite a bit, but you can look at how the battle unfolded to see how fighting in CQB was advantageous to the rebels. ISDs have a narrow forward facing firing arc that would have been a huge disadvantage in close quarters, money cal cruisers though excel at broadsides and their string shielding would have allowed to them to stay in the fight. Also the smaller support shops would have been able to entirely outflank the imperials hitting the rear of the ISDs easily.

No I understand those weaknesses it’s just they had to close and that would take time. There was just so much firepower and those imperials always could orient their ship on a new target to maximize their firepower. They also knew they where coming. My point is even if they did win they should of lost everything they had.

I really appreciate this video. I'm researching for a fanfic I'm writing and now have a better understanding of the Battle of Endor.
