People forget that they were once tiny humans as well. Tiny humans think, feel, reason etc. like the rest of us, they are just often less developed in these faculties. But, that's just the general case. I've met kids with more emotional intelligence than 50 year old manchilds. Just because they're less developed than they'll be when they're adults, still doesn't mean they're less developed than current adults.

As a DM I'm trying to give a satisfying experience rather than aiming to eliminate players, so random encounter enemies don't usually employ much in the way of tactics, they're there to give the players a new kind of puzzle to solve. If I took those same npcs and played tactically like a wargame I wouldn't be surprised if the story was very different.

Unless I've deliberately built up the location to be dangerous and scary place I don't actually want unnamed guard no.3 to discontinue a PC that someone has invested a lot of time and effort into. As a DM I must ask if you’ve ever dealt with a “that guy” at the table, because trying to talk them is usually like talking to a brick wall. Usually a character death is a humbling wake up call or just enough for them to leave in a fit of rage. In my experience at least

We had a PC like this, he would intentionally put the party in danger then dip out before things got bad and he would take our characters gold/items off them during rests. DM talked to them multiple times and they basically told the DM to go eff themselves and the DM did everything he could before just kicking the player out but every time he tried to kill the pc dude would roll high enough to be safe. Or he would conviently know a cantrip thatd help get him out of a situation, finally one day the PC died and dude wigged out throwing shit around and everything and stormed out of the apartment. He left his dice and character sheet and we realized his dice set had 2 D20 dice one was weighted for nat 20s one wasnt and we realized he would keep one in his sleeve and just sleight of hand switch them out depending on if he needed a high roll or not.

Yeah as a DM you need someone like that in a group who understands the assignment. The sign says Extreme Danger Ahead, it means you'll die if you go forward and not run straight into the Dragons Lair. So you need the paladin to knock the fuck out of the bard and drag him back to city.
