How The Latest Close-Up Pluto Images Shocked NASA Scientists

Ғылым және технология

Start speaking a new language in 3 weeks with Babbel 🎉 ➡️ bit.ly/3r5qd6R
When NASA's New Horizons spacecraft finally reached Pluto and sent back the first images of the far-flung world, we saw something that absolutely blew our minds. For decades, Pluto had been a planet of paradoxes. Once considered the ninth planet in our solar system, it had been reclassified, debated, and wondered about. The object had remained a blurry dot even in our most powerful telescopes. But now, after more than 80 years of its discovery, we had the first close-up pictures of Pluto. The spacecraft showed us a Pluto filled with geological features that indicated not just a history of activity but the possibility of ongoing dynamism. Towering Mountains, deep valleys, and vast plains suggested a world in the process of changing, not a fossilized relic from the past.
But the most surprising discovery was the strong evidence of a subsurface ocean concealed beneath layers of ice. This finding didn't just make us reconsider Pluto; it threw open new doors of possibility for the existence of life beyond Earth. If a so-called 'dead' planet, at the far reaches of our solar system, could harbor an ocean, what else might we find as we venture deeper into the cosmos?

What are the rules by which Celestial objects are described as "Planets", "Dwarf Planets", "Moons", "Asteroids", "Comets", or anything else I may have missed.? . Does Pluto having an underground Ocean change this.? If so, would that then potentially reclassify other "Celestial objects" currently considered "Moon's".? If not, why.?

Pluto is a Dwarf Planet. The reason why it’s classified as a Dwarf Planet and not a planet is because though it orbits the sun like the rest of the planets, it’s not as massive as the other planets. Pluto is smaller than both the planet Mercury and our moon. That’s why it’s called a DWARF Planet.

We don't think of earth as not a planet because it has a different classification than Jupiter do we? Don't you think it's useful to be able to know what the characteristics of something are just by hearing the classification? Otherwise we'd have to go into detail all the time. Like if an alien came down and said it lives on a planet you could respond by saying "wow, how do you live on a gas giant?" because it didn't give you a planet type to work with. It's like introducing yourself as a life form instead of being specific and saying you are a human. Or telling someone you drive a vehicle. Well what kind of vehicle, there are many types and they can be very different but they are all vehicles yes?

Definitely still a planet in my mind… i take Science, and Astronomy quite seriously; and I think they really jumped the gun by changing its classification. The change will probably lead to less primary curriculum on Pluto, and grouping it with other “dwarf planets,” in textbooks. That would be a shame. I guess the fact that the baricenter between Pluto & Charon was a big factor in its reclassification & the reason it was reclassified AS a dwarf planet. The reclassification of Pluto back TO a planet would put closer-to-us bodies like Ceres (in the asteroid belt) into that classification🤔 The classifications regarded in smaller bodies in our solar system is quite vague when dwarf planets are taken into consideration. Kinda flusters this nerd, too; because I remember Pluto being considered a planet🤔🤓

I grew up and was educated, like so many people, with 9 planets in the Solar System. In 2006 the IAU gave that controversial "gift" to both professionals and amateurs of astronomy... However, they justified the decision. If we change the criterion again, we will probably have to accept the idea of a system not with 9, but with dozens of planets, among them Ceres itself, which orbits a star, has reached hydrostatic equilibrium and has recently been discovered geological activity. I don't know if it would be time to renew all the textbooks again...

If the IAU is worried about all the dwarf planets similar to Pluto, why not just state "The original nine planets were Mercury...Pluto. Further discoveries of dwarf planets similar to Pluto (Ceres, Makemake, etc.) has expanded the number of possible planets." That way you include the original nine plus note the idea of dwarf planets, more planets of the solar system, new names for students to be intrigued by, and the idea that science is changing, not always the same. I know that when I was a youngster such would have compelled me to get into astronomy (which I considered once entering college).

Pluto The god of Hell, it's amazing celestial with beautiful white heart, I've heared much of interesting stories from Pluto like whale on Pluto an ocean on Pluto is good reason to believe there will be a whale on Pluto. Since 2006 Pluto haven't been a planet anymore because it's size is too small BUT in my heart Pluto will always be a ninth planet of our solar system. 🌠🌍🚀👨🏻‍🚀👩🏾‍🚀🧑🏼‍🚀🌑☀️🛰🛸👽👾🪐🪐🪐🪐🪐🪐🪐🪐🌌

Pluto wasn't classified as a dwarf planet for its activity, intriguing it is. It's a dwarf planet because it didn't clear its orbit. However, it might not be the only dwarf planet in its orbit, given its center of mass while orbiting the Sun is noticeably above the surface of Pluto. Charon may be the other dwarf.

I wholeheartedly agree that Pluto should be classified as a true planet as it always has been and not like the idiot who called it a dwarf planet just because they say it hasn't cleared out his orbit sure seems I can clear it out to me there is no recent impacts that we can tell and if there was that's motions of clearing out your surroundings for planet

I agree, Pluto is a planet. Similarly, if Eris and Makemake possess oceans and other characteristics that qualify them as distinct celestial bodies, then they should also be classified as planets.

The reclassification of Pluto depends on the definition of 'planet'. Those who want to reclassify Pluto seek to alter the definition. The reasoning is that their opinion is far more important than anyone else's opinion. I find that an absurd argument. I will also think of Pluto as a planet. That's what I was taught as a kid and that's what I'll stick with. (I'm in my eighth decade.) My reasoning may be no less silly that the would be 'changers' but I don't expect anyone to accept it as the immutable law of the Universe, either. I consider from an astronomer's standpoint, that Pluto is a dwarf planet, but a fascinating dwarf planet. I note from the video that 'fascinating' is not a criteria for planethood. Oh, well.

Here's another the question that struck me while watching the video. Doesn't plutos orbit takes it into the kipper belt during its year, wouldn't pluto potentially gain and/or lose moons?

Just because a small group of influential IAU members called a quicky meeting at a oversea scientific conference unbeknown to the vast majority of voting members back in 2006 and jammed this demoting of planet Pluto for their own reasons shouldn't stand in the way of having a honest and open discussion about reclassifying Pluto to it's pervious listing as a full planet status with all the new information we've gained because of the close flyby in 2016, if the full membership of IAU choose not to change Pluto's status then so be it but at least it because of a true majority vote.

Under the IAU definition of a planet, if there were another planet exactly opposite Earth in the same orbit around the sun, neither Earth nor that other planet would be a planet. That's why it's a stupid rule.

Of course there are other planets in our solar system with water. If there was enough water in the newborn solar system for earth to form such large oceans, then it stands to reason there was enough water for other planets to form oceans too.

Most important point: Whether Pluto is recognised as planet or not it doesn't matter to Pluto. It will revolve around the sun and will in the future and Pluto doesn't care about those nonsense....

The fact that it's a dwarf planet and not a planet helps tell information about its surroundings. All the other planets have a clear "neighborhood", which Pluto does not, and this is likely due to its small stature. For relativity, Pluto is less than half the size of Mercury. Charon is actually Over half the size of Pluto; this means that they technically don't revolve around each other, but around a common point between the 2 bodies. It's almost more of a dual-bodied system as opposed to a clear primary and satellite system. Again, for relativity, our moon is about 1/4 the size of earth, yet nearly 33% larger than Pluto. In short, it takes more than simply being round and going around the sun to be a planet

We need to ask Webb to take more interest in Pluto by spending more time taking photos and sending them back to Earth. We can learn a lot by photos alone. A probe would take a long time. One retasked to slow to the orbit of Pluto so future changes and new findings are noted.
