As a Pole I will tell you the truth about martial law implemented in 1981. Russians said they will not intervene in Poland under any circumstances, but general Jaruzelski (at that time 1st person in country) made the decision himself. It's an oversimplification to say that if Polish communists wouldn't stop the strikes, the Russians would help them to do that, like in Czechoslovakia in 1968.

Yet Gorbachev sent ussr forces and tanks to Vilnius, Lithuania in 1991 to put down the revolution starting there, which was the of cause almost 20 deaths by gunshot or tank roll over. He wasnt that good. Somehow you see him in the US differently than we do.

I was a Russian linguist in the US Navy during the last 11 years of the Cold War and I can tell you that we were all very, VERY surprised when the Berlin Wall came down. It was a great shocking day for the world!

So at this time I was renting a private room in a house from a family that was hosting a West Berlin exchange student. Upon our first meeting he made very clear to me that he was a West Berliner. I do see this as a correlative to being a Virginian as opposed to being a West Virginian. There are many acceptable prejudices against people from the mountain state. I was raised in a family that had no truck with prejudice. I later on became an amateur mountain bike racer and the best races were located in West Virginia. All of this said the wall came down while I was living there. I did not confront this young man. I do think that our constitution in this country, the USA, does guarantee liberal democracy. I do think that in practice the rule of law has been a failure. From the rulings from the Supreme Court in 1832, until today, the megamachine has been in charge. Whether it be white people or Cherokee Indians keeping their own African slaves, the megamachine has been paramount.

Well history is a bit more nuanced then this... even before 1989 there were incidents that defied the influence of Moscow on the soviet block: "After the negotiated withdrawal of Soviet troops, Romania under the new leadership of Nicolae Ceauşescu started to pursue independent policies, including the condemnation of the Soviet-led 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia-Romania being the only Warsaw Pact country not to take part in the invasion" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Romania
