You need to fact-check before making any comment if you want credibility. Tim Duncan was robbed of tens of millions as were Kevin Garnet and Robert De Niro. They were all robbed by someone close. And they all speak English. It happens way more than you think. As for the marriage , it’s a cultural thing to keep your private life on low profile and not make a fuss about your marriage. Just like when Hideki Matsui surprisingly announced his marriage out of nowhere. Just ask any Japanese about how Shohei handled his marriage. Only Canadians would make an issue out this. Ohtani was never accused by anyone on anything. Yet the media and people like you try to make a villain out of Ohtani for no reason other than simple hate or jealousy or whatever. Here in the west coast, he is adored and that is all that matters for Dodger fans.

I am well aware of those situations and do not believe in any way that Ohtani bet on baseball. Maybe you missed the part where I quote the Athletic story that shows Mizuhara is guilty. I can admit to making a mistake about the marriage. I can appreciate the differences in culture. What I am suggesting is that when you sign the biggest contract in professional sports and put yourself on one of the most prominent franchises in sports that you are going to need to adapt. Ohtani is going to be scrutinized far more in this position. You may be able to keep a low profile and just play baseball on the Angels. That is not true with the Dodgers and people love to hate on the big high budget team.

Wtf calling Shohei a villain??? So what if he had most of his money deferred. California politicians are upset cause he won’t pay a huge income tax, good for him. Shohei suffered for years at Angels. It’s ok if he makes it to the playoffs now but no guarantee he will win a single WS. Hell even Yankees and Judge didn’t make it to 1 WS either. Why are you calling Shohei a villain when he never tasted a playoffs and who cares if he wins 1? In baseball there’s no guarantee in postseason.

Significant deferred money puts the vast majority of baseball in a place they can not do financially. More importantly it was Ohtani's idea! This gives all the appearance of the Dodgers attempting to buy a championship. This screams late 90s early 2000s Yankees who most certainly were villains. It does not help he is the biggest potential star in the game, but is completely closed off. Baseball needs stars ot can promote, not players to just show up and play. The contract and move to the Dodgers changed his role in baseball. If you disagree you are welcome to that opinion. I love a solid baseball debate.

Good subject and an interesting take on Ohtani that I happen to share. Perhaps, it's not so much Ohtani himself, it's the point you hit on - we hate the Dodgers. The legality of the deferred money is a loophole that the owners should close (of course, they won't). I find myself agreeing with David Samson on the reasons. As Forbes magazine stated, the legality versus the ability of (most) other teams to effectuate this type of deferral contract simply exacerbates the untenable inequity in MLB. This is a serious business source, not a sour-grapes Marlins fan talking here! Regarding the Dodgers' 2020 so-called "title," I don't think it is legitimate, but that means nothing since MLB has placed it on par with every other WS title. Otherwise, the $2 billion spent by LA in the Roberts era before this season should have produced nothing but a lot of regular season wins. Think the Dodger fans are satisfied with that? Were the 1990s Braves fans? One WS title after a decade of dominance is not satisfactory. So, Ohtani is the face of the Dodgers and that means I cannot pull for his success, or at least, his personal stats can be anything as long as the Dodgers do not win a title for the next ten years. Baseball fans, as you noted, need the proverbial big bad wolf or evil empire to hate and pull against. Count me in that group! Ciao and Expos Toujours.

I appreciate the response as always. I think the move to the Dodgers is a huge part of this. A large portion of people want to see the big high budget teams fail. I struggle with the 2020 title. I understand the need for the shortened season, but it was a very challenging playoff. It always seems that health of pitching staff at playoff time greatly affects the Dodgers, so the shortened season certainly helped in that regard. The Ohtani move combined with the others like Yamamoto certainly have turned the Dodgers into the next evil empire. I am intrigued as to what happens to the deferred money loophole. It is definitely creating inequity. I happened to catch some of David Samson on the Rich Eisen show. We need to hear more from him, what a great host. I tend to agree that nothing will change.

@@3up3down Solid points. Yes, there has to be at least a modicum of hope for smaller-income teams. Otherwise, what is the point of watching a sport without any hope? There are too many entertainment choices now, and MLB must consider options to counter the "untenable" inequity, as Forbes noted. It's difficult for an Expos fan to stomach Samson, but if he's right, he's right. His experience gives his insights a lot of weight. Regarding 2020, as I have often said, do you think the legitimacy would be as unquestioned if the Marlins had won their third title, then? Let's face it, the answer is negative, and the howling would be much broader. The fact that the Dodgers needed those ridiculous set of circumstances to win after 32 years is hilarious, in any case. Perhaps, it vindicated Roberts and their spending strategy, but internally, perhaps not. I know one thing - a single WS title in the Ohtani era would be an unmitigated disaster for them. There is no way a single title - if it ever comes - satisfies the expectations of ownership or the fans. I wonder about the Phillies and Yankees, as well. This is the sixth year of the Harper era. Is one WS appearance enough progress? of course not. Not at all. They are another team that desperately needs vindication from at least one championship. The Yankees are, of course, in their own category. Their Judge/Cole (Stanton? Soto?) era demands championships for vindication. Nothing else matters to Yankees fans. All the blather about competitiveness and "just getting the opportunity" goes right out the window. No one associated with the powerhouse teams is satisfied with those various "levels of success." In fairness, though, we fans have a hard time distinguishing on-field success and financial success, for which the owners place an unquestionable higher priority (can't really blame them for that).

@@thomasjoseph3488 You really can not grow the game without hope for smaller franchises. That being said, you also have to ownerships in place willing to grow smaller franchises by reinvesting money into the team. Of course, this is the fan perspective. In the end the billionaire is going to do what they want to do with the team. I knew a little of Samson from the Marlins era, but did not realize he was that involved with the shadiness of the Expos situation. The Yankees judging performance only by World Series titles I think has a long history and does indeed make sense in a lot of ways. I really do think the Dodgers need to win a full season title in the next 2 years or this era of Dodger baseball will be faced with some seriously difficult questions. I know the talk with playoffs is always that they are a small sample size and a team just needs to get hot, but with the amount of opportunities and amount of failures the Dodgers have had, we are no longer talking small sample size. A World Series win does legitimize your success for 5-10 years depending on the size of your organization. I hadn't thought of the Phillies in this way, but do agree they are getting into that feeling of desperately needing a championship. If the Padres could sustain their payroll they would fit this as well with Machado. In my mind, what sets Ohtani apart from other Dodgers is he doesn't have that title and joined for that reason and deferred all that money to win. Betts has his title from Boston, Freeman has the Braves win, to truly be in the conversation of Greatest of All Time Ohtani is going to need a title. That's why I think the move to the Dodgers really starts to portray him more as a villain than ever before.

@@thomasjoseph3488@3up3down My biggest issue as a Dodgers fan with a video like this, is that it's all sour grapes at this point. If the Bluejays would have locked up Ohtani, and was given the same deferred deal that he gave the Dodgers, and that deal led to signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto, you would have never created this video, and would never question Ohtani in any way about his way of living his life and wanting his privacy. Regarding the 2020 WS, 30 teams had a chance to win, & 29 teams failed. It's that simple. Last but not least. The teams that spend big money aren't guaranteed to win it all. Teams like the Guardians in 2016, Rays in 2020, and Dbacks in 2023 were not big spenders, but got hot at the right moment. They didn't win the WS, but got to the highest stage. In the end this is baseball, and anything can happen.

@@TheRightFieldPavilion I can understand the accusation of sour grapes. I openly admit to being a Blue Jays fan, but more importantly I am a baseball fan. When a player signs the biggest contract in sports history in one of the biggest markets there are going to be certain expectations placed on that player off the field. It has happened recently with Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, and will happen again soon with Juan Soto. Ohtani has made his choice with a desire to win. That in itself is setting him up as a villain to other fan bases. It was also announced today that Mizuhara stole $16 million for Ohtani. In no way do I believe Ohtani bet on baseball, but to suggest there isn't an issue feels naive to me (Not that you suggested this). As for 2020, the game was the game. They earned a championship. I respect it more than the 2017 Astros, but a full season title in the next couple of years would help. I do appreciate the comment and opinion. I appreciate the debates and opinions of others.
