I think that this egocentric perception of time is pretty common among humans. We say, "time flies," without any change in time, only our perception. I looked around at a few dictionary definitions, but they were pretty circular regarding "present" and "now." I think that the definition of "now" as the single point of time with no length between unknown length past and (unknown length?) future is pretty useless. If, instead, we define now as a relative, ambiguous period of time between distant past and distant future, then we can truly live in the now. Indeed, we always live in the now even when we're not paying attention. The idea of a useful, but ambiguous magnitude isn't unique to time. People struggle with "few" and "several" because they are useful when we don't know the quantities only the order of magnitude. (I still maintain that a couple is only two, but that a few can be between two and several, inclusive-exclusive.) I don't mean this presumptuously. Joe provides a useful service even when I can nitpick definitions and philosophy.

I totally enjoy watching every episode. Thank you very much for making that much great show! I am so much appreciative. It's that time again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! You always say at the end of show, 'Stay Curious!.' Where does time go, anyway?

7 years late to the party, English "year" does not descend from greek "hora", but rather is cognate to it. That is, they both come from a common word, proto-indo-european "*yóh₁r̥" (the asterisk signifies that this is a reconstructed word). Hour, of course, descends directly from "hora".

4:01 The equinoxes are not where the line(s) of the analemma cross but a bit further down half-way between the solstices. Additionally, since 1955 the tropical year is not the average distance between two spring equinoxes, and the distance between two spring equinoxes is different from the distance between two autumn equinoxes.

at 3:20: That graphic is misleading. it seems to imply that our rotational axis oscillates catastrophically more than it really does. Seasons are not due to the rotational axis changing throughout a year. In fact, our rotational axis hardly changes at all. Because it doesn't change, we have different hemispheres tilted towards the sun depending on whereabouts we are in our orbit.

At about 4:00 it is implied that the Sun is at the cross-over point of the analemma on the Equinoxes. It is not. The cross-over point is in April and August. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Analemma_Earth.png

Joe, I must disagree with you about the English word "year" coming from the Greek word "hora". Hora and geār are both words and they come from languages. I'm also going to become a linguist. I study words often so I believe I know my stuff. I believe "geār is related to "hora", and they most likely share a common Indo-European, (or, Proto-Indo-European, whichever you prefer saying), ancestor because of this portion of relation. I believe "year" does not come from Greek though. This is why: it comes from the Old English word, "gēar", (or, geār, [I can't remember for certain what the spelling is]). I find that you have provoked uncertainty in my mind though, so in a short while I will out the dictionary to make sure which one of us is communicating truth. I hope I wasn't harsh. If I was harsh, then I hope I wasn't too harsh. Happy birthday! I like your channel.

3:02 "the word 'year' actually comes from the Greek word 'hora' which means season." Sorry to do this, but the word "year" in no way "comes from" Greek. It comes from Old English ġēar, which comes from Proto-Germanic *jērą, which comes from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₁r- which means year (the meaning stayed intact all the way to Modern English!) This Proto-Indo-European root, finally, is where the Ancient Greek ὥρα ("hōra"). "year" and "ὥρα" come from the same Proto-Indo-European word, but that does not mean that, as you said, "the word 'year' actually comes from the Greek word." (As for the word "hour," that is borrowing from French "houre" ultimately derived from Latin "hora," which was a borrowing of the Ancient Greek "ὥρα")

I like viewing time as the medium, and we are floating among it. I mean, time isn't a *thing*, like water, but I think it does flow. The future is most certainly over there, and the past is behind us, and even if we stand still, it continues to move around us (although we're never truly standing still)

How many days in solar year. You may say 365.2425 as per gregorian, 365.25 as per julian and 365.24218 as per scientific community or astronomers and astrophysicists, they called it tropical year and calculated that sidereal year (alignment to fixed star) is lessen by about 20 minutes every year. This difference in tropical and sidereal year led to idea of precession of equinox or say gyroscopical motion of earth, the precession rate calculated as about 50" (seconds in angle) per year. These precession cause shifting of season relative to fixed constellations of ecliptic. But you might wonder that this is not correct. A year consists of 359 synodic days (from sunrise to next sunrise) or days. As we know from science and observation if one want that a sidereal day (position of a star to next rise or day) is 4 minutes less than a synodic or day. So a day is 24 hours of average, while a sidereal day is 23 hours and 56 minutes. We are not assuming that whether earth is rotating or sidereal day is of 1 degree. That makes calculation lot easier but that takes assumptions. The difference of 4 minutes cause sun to rise further eastward from that star. So to again align for that star with its initial position took one complete sidereal rotation or one sidereal day. So mathematics is, no. of days per minute of sidereal recession = 1/4 days per minute. For a complete sidereal circle of 23 hours and 56 minutes or 1,436 minutes is = 1/4 × 1,436 = 359 days. Now this 359 days or 360⁰ is duration of a sidereal year in terms of synodic days. Here we don't take assumption that 1 sidereal day is 1⁰ on ecliptic, so loss of time for 360⁰ is = 360 × 4 = 1,440 minutes or 1 day. Subtract this from 360 days (assuming 1⁰ on ecliptic is 1 synodic day) is 359 days. Here both tropical and sidereal year aligns after 359 days, so there is no precession of equinox or shifting of seasons. Question is why scientific community still persists on a year of 365.24218 days, which was modified version of ancient egyptian by greeks or romans. Their own calculation says that sidereal year is 20 minutes more, which comes naturally as 5 more days than 360 days and each day is 4 minutes less. They reversed the result by saying tropical year is shorter.

In one year, the solar system travels 7.2 trillion meters, not kilometers. Otherwise, that would be insanely close to the speed of light!!
