In US news and current events today, residents of St. John Parish are fighting for environmental justice in the face of toxic pollution that is causing cancer at high rates.
Robert Taylor: I think about when I have to go home, and I have to lie in the bed. And that odor hits me. Even though I’ve closed all the doors and the windows.
Robert Taylor is a resident of ‘Cancer Alley.’
Taylor: That’s what got started me in this two years ago-to actually try and do something about this- because I realized, for years, we’ve tried to ignore this.
Taylor and other residents continue to demand action. After a study linked pollution from this power plant to increased rates of cancer.
A study by the University Network for Human Rights, found evidence of unusually high rates of cancer in an area near the Pontchartrain Works facility in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana. The facility emits chloroprene, a toxic chemical used to produce neoprene. It was identified as a ‘likely human carcinogen’ by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2010.

Mike Louis sorry for your losses as well but sadly we almost all of the older ppl down my dad’s street died of cancer not just my grandmother. They have been poisoning the air and earth for decades. This isn’t isolated to just this parish. It runs from Chalmette Louisiana into Texas!

@@charro028 I feel your pain and loss very deeply. We , western Pennsylvania and specifically the Greater Pittsburgh region, were basically the birthplace of American heavy industry. Paint, oil, steel, aluminum, radioactives, glass, you name it. The oil industry started here, the entire area is undermined by old abandoned coal mines, there are many superfund sites. It's like we were a giant test tube to see just how much pollution a human could endure. You have my deepest pity because I know exactly how you feel. Did I mention that my dad died just 2 years ago from brain cancer? My inlaws, mom pancreatic, dad mesothelioma, sister in law, lung, grand mother stomach. It never ends.

Mike Louis I’m not trying to compare. It’s not right. Period. Once aware of things, we as a society, should make the appropriate changes to keep our population healthy. That’s the moral thing to do. Unfortunately, tho they’d have us believe that they do have morals and values, the 1% only care about their bottom line. MONEY!!!!!

When Ruhan Nagra, the Executive Director of University Network for Human Rights said, "People have built their homes... their LIVES here..." I could have hugged her. It is so difficult to get people to understand that NOT EVERYONE HAS THE OPTION TO JUST LEAVE. It's not about stubbornness or acting helpless, it's the fact that it's easier said than done to jump up and move to a different area. There are so many barriers in place (i.e., when their property values decreased) that make it nearly impossible to leave. So what's the solution? Just CLOSE THE PLANTS DOWN!!!

"god" bless them huh, that the same "god" that allowed them to get cancer in the first place? Isn't this "god" of yours all powerful, can't it help these people? Does it choose not to help them, if so how horrible. Or is it that it can't help, if so what a weak "god". How about you thank the people actually working to help them, you know the doctors. The people that aren't fairy tales. Oh, and which "god" is this, Thor? Ra? Zeus? Yahwey? Vishnu? I mean there have been so many made up over the years I never can remember which one people are worshiping this century.

What many people don’t know, is that even though the EPA administrator is given a cabinet rank, the department itself isn’t actually even an official cabinet department. That’s why they’re able to get away with all this madness. It’s an independent agency meaning that the kinds of rules and regulations imposed on other departments (education, treasury, homeland security, housing, etc.) don’t necessarily apply to them. Even though the administrator is appointed by the President and approved by Congress, and even though the department is “constitutionally” apart of the executive branch, the agency is still isn’t apart of the executive office which means they are independent of Presidential control.
