What Everyone Gets Wrong About Food Stamps | Opinions | NowThis

‘The amount of people that are sitting around…is absolutely tiny compared to the thousands and thousands of working families that are struggling to get by.’ - Food bank CEO Erik Talkin is breaking through the myths about Americans on food stamps.

TALKIN: You know a lot of people who are on SNAP, the vast majority, there are at least one person who are working full time in the household.
I’ve been working in food banking for 11 years, before that time I ran a kitchen in a homeless shelter. So a lot of people’s perception of people who might be on food stamps are people who are not doing anything to look after themselves, or just kind of sitting around waiting for life to get better.
And the truth is 180 degrees away from that. The amount of people who are sitting around being looked after is absolutely tiny compared to the thousands and thousands of working families that are struggling to get by.
So every couple of years I do a ‘food security challenge’ and that lasts for one month. And for that month I try to live on $6.46 a day. And that’s the amount of money that a single person would get on CalFresh, which is the California version of food stamps.
It was a little grim last year-or last time I did it, which was two years ago. Yes, I was stuck with a few apples and a few kitten cookies to get me through that last couple of days. And really this is a typical experience for people who are on SNAP in that benefits typically run out in the third week of people receiving SNAP. So for that last week of the month people are really suffering.
And the challenge that we’ve always faced is that healthy food is the first thing to get cut. If you have to pay a lot of money for your medical bills or your car breaks down and can’t get to work, then food is always the thing that people say, ‘well, I’ll just eat junky food,’ and this creates a kind of a spiral, a downward spiral in that if you have less healthy food you become less healthy and less able to work.
So food banks are there to deal with what is a daily disaster, which is hunger. Which is you know very prevalent in its form of food insecurity. But over the last year we’ve seen food banks serve a lot of different people than they were serving in the past. In our area we had the Thomas fire and debris flow and that led to a lot of people needing help who weren’t getting help.
So my interest // is really to draw people’s attention to this fact that one in six Americans is hungry and there’s something very simple that we can do about this.
America can’t move forward if people are hungry within the country. We can’t be productive, children can’t be productive and learn in school if they’re hungry. So this is a fundamental thing that we believe that people of all political stripes should believe and follow. So we really try to encourage people to make sure that the minimum level of benefits are available to people throughout the country.

@@jred4511 If you compare the amount of food in this country to the people. There are so many people going hungry while others sit around and waste so much. Food insecurity. Personally I have and am living it. It's horrible. You wonder every day can I afford food? How about water? Do I buy myself food or my dog? My family? I don't know how many times we have had to choose between plumbing, power, and food. That is how we are both a first and third world country in one. Many people live life securely, never having to wonder where your meal is going to come from, is your power going to go out, worrying if the phone bill gets shut off, how about college, etc. They are the lucky ones. And then there's the people like my family. We aren't stable in the slightest. We have to pick and choose what necessities we get this paycheck. Constantly worrying over everything. This is our country, it has light but most of it is in the dark right now.

When I was growing up my family received food stamps. And I can tell you first hand it was NEVER enough. We always ran out of food before we were able to have more. My dad has always worked so for people to assume that those who receive food stamps are lazy and just taking advantage of the system is stupid. My mom was always embarrassed to pay with food stamps. I can’t tell you how many times me and my siblings lived off of Ramon noodles b/c there was nothing else to eat.

Imagine having all these riches and fancyness and going into poor places and telling everybody there that everything will be fine. Will they believe in them? Let's not be idiots, humans are not idiots. We are ignorant and they do not understand us those idiots who according to their absurd democracies that often do not help at all if the millionaires check the elections indirectly with the propaganda that is called news or movies or entertainment. Let's not fool ourselves by believing that there are human people capable of leading others when they themselves are rotten from the moment they are born. We are poor not because of their systems that classify others by merit. We are poor not because we are guilty by nature but because they blame us for the same thing they did. We are poor because although we see that the world is literally on fire and sinking we do absolutely nothing to change it, whether it is true or not directly affecting us. We live in constant wars among ourselves while we kill animals for "our safety." Our mind has become unbalanced so much that we are practically beings without any feeling not for other humans but for the entire life of this planet. The woman who was the one with emotions has already reached the level of the man and does not protect and gives love to her children, they design and manipulates them. And unfortunately and by consistency it will continue to be and we will end up swallowing each other but we will find that critical point in our lives where we see for all without seeing races or relationships. We are not robots that follow orders, we are human and humans, despite our indifference and ideas, we see not only for ourselves but for all living beings that exist on this planet where we exist. Let's not expect everything to go to waste, let's act to make this world not better for us but better for the world. And it all starts with realizing our mistakes. Of our failures of our humanity that we do not know. We are poor not of material possessions but of knowledge, we are poor of conscience. We are poor of compation, we are poor of brotherhood of sisterhood. We are poor of humanity. We are poor. Where I'm at, public works city employees were forced to retire or get laid off (fired) then replaced w/ free inmate labor. Prisons are where the jobs are at. No benefits and (some) companies pay the inmates peanuts. They went from cheap illegal immigrant labor to free prison labor. Whose fault is it if people can’t afford basic needs and must turn to the government? The big overarching problem in America isn’t that poor people aren’t working hard enough; it’s that their wages aren’t high enough, their jobs and hours can be unpredictable, and their employers don’t provide robust enough benefits for them to live without support. We need to charge corporations a “freeloader” fee if their employees depend on government aid like food stamps. Yet at the same time, the Republican solution for the social welfare programs on which so many Americans depend is to impose work requirements, in the hopes that conditioning a person’s benefits on working or looking for work will result in them being paid more wages and lifting them to a better financial state where they don’t need federal assistance. But the data on low-income workers belies that argument. We don’t have a pandemic of lazy welfare recipients in this country, by and large, but we do seem to have an economy that doesn’t provide many people with enough financial support for basic human needs. *The problem isn’t that Americans aren’t willing to work; most of the people who rely on federal assistance already do if they can. The problem is an economy that has rewarded corporations, and by extension the rich people who disproportionately invest in them, more than workers.*

A COUPLE THINGS TO POINT OUT: 1.) S.N.A.P. is designed mainly as an "assistance" program. That is, it's meant to greatly reduce the amount a recipient would need to spend on good. If benefits run out before the end of the month, the recipient would usually have enough in their own income to pay the difference. 2.) Healthy food is not so expensive. A candy bar for example costs about $1.00. On the other hand, a pair of apples which also costs about $1.00 are both affordable and more fulfilling.

I know 10 people on food stamps. All are young 20’s males and 1, 26 year old women that makes $150,000 as a cocktail waitress. Exception of 1 guy in a wheelchair that actually needs it. Very few people that have it, really need it. It’s to the point I can see someone in line at the grocery store and before they get to the cashier I know they will use food stamps. And I’ve been right 100% of the time. It’s being severely abused. And the handicapped guy, all he does is smoke weed all day every day. 4 random drug tests a year. If any positives, then loss of food stamps for 5 years. Do a minimum level of finding out how much a person actually makes at their job (tips). If they are gambling or lottery tickets permanent loss of stamps. This needs to be for emergency only. And temporary. To help someone get back on their feet. Unless they have a permanent disability. It’s out of control.

Junk food is not cheaper than fresh and frozen produce. That’s the REAL myth. More often than not, it’s actually more expensive. There are also cheap cuts of meat that taste quite delicious with the right seasoning. I realize that not everybody is a “chef”, so let me anticipate that rebuttal right away before anyone tries to use it. Seasoning food to your liking isn’t something that only a chef can do. You can experiment and decide what works best for you. It takes the same amount of time to do that as it does to open and gorge on a bag of Doritos, so don’t even use that argument either. Back to my main point: it’s a lousy excuse for these food stamp people to use, saying that “Healthy food is too expensive”. I work at a store, so you can’t fool me. I know the prices like the back of my hand.

Everyone took math class when there are discounts people are more likely to weigh their options better dont just knock with the food stamps part of it because it wouldnt help anyone it would just take more people off it that need it even tho they arent eating the best way

narutoedw1n I get what you mean but that falls outside the food stamp controversy, that’s more like a food industry situation. Whatever the price the food is being sold for, people will still buy it. That’s the whole point of food stamps.

@@marin4767 people would still buy it but less of it. Its quality vs quantities in that situation in the end heathly choices would be purchased perhaps the moment the balance is added into their accounts after a week they would go back to eating unhealthy because now they have to budget their choices. Its wishful thinking that its a just a food industry problem since we all know everything that is considered food comes with an expiration date if nothing is sold then it will be thrown out and they ultimately lose revenue on their products I would argue any food industry should make it its mission to sell all their products even if they have to cheapen it for those who cant afford it after all a happy customer is a reoccurring customer. Not mention snap benefits local businesses like as grocery stores or supermarkets the less people on snap the less revenue they receive its a cycle no money is really wasted

So why is it you see people on food stamps with steak and junk food filling their carts? Sure wish I could have steak, but junk food never enters my house, everything prepared from scratch.

People that are not on food stamps buy the same amount of junk food as people on food stamps. And steaks are food If someone is on food stamps know how to budget I don't see why they can't have it you can get steaks on sale last week I paid $15 for New York steaks 2 came in the package that pretty good deal. When I go to a steak house I pay over $50 for my husband and I

The homeless don't have a way to cook, refrigerate or store food. So they either sell the snap benefits for half value or buy cheep dollar tree quality instant foods. So health and welfare are not a major concern. Surviving is

Here's a novel idea... HEALTHY people need to get a J O B .A lot of older retired folk, who decided to do the correct thing and go to work, struggle to eat properly. They don't qualify for any Gov't. assistance at all. While the DEADBEATS eat like kings and play video games all day. The welfare system needs to be changed. Give out food that has to be cooked only, and watch the help wanted signs come down. Healthy men and women,{ not children and elderly ect.} should not be eligible for free food.
