I live in Belgium near that border and I always saw that that part as a piece of the Netherlands, like most people living near and in that town. You should’ve mentioned the times during the pandemic, that was even more complicated. Some bars and restaurants could open and then the other ones across the street had to close and vice versa when the rules changed in each Country.

As a Dutch born I live now in Belgium since 8 months. Baarle is only 5 miles from here. It used to be funny here when there where borders and we did not have the euro but guilders and francs. Back then I lived just in the Netherlands and while all shops where closed on Sunday because of relegious things we went every sunday to the Belgian bakery :-). They had the best baked breads :-). Lately I discovered that my great, great etc. forefather was born in a small town called Overslag. That town is also at the border between Belgium and The Netherlands!

One thing you failed to mention.... From the time of the end of the Spanish rule of the lower countries until 1830, Belgium and The Netherlands were the same country. Belgium split in 1830 which brought this border to full light as while it was the same countries nothing mattered.

Correct! When those treaties were made, Breda was part of Brabant and the Lord of Breda a knight of the Duke of Brabant. Nor Belgium, nor the Netherlands existed as nation states. All cultivated and used land remained by the Duke for tax and rent reasons, all waste land went to the Lord for exploitation and development. Much, much later, the succession of the Duke went to the Spanish King while succession of the Lordship of Breda came to Prince Willem van Oranje-Nassau. With the treaty of Westphalia in 1648, both noble families respected each others ancient rights, and the old split-up was restored. Only in modern times, with nation states, the borders slowly became national borders. During occupations, French several times, German twice, they didn't care about any border, let alone those within Baarle. Mutual recognition of the borders happened in 1994! After Benelux, EU and Schengen treaties...
