How Pakistani F-16s Shot Down Russian Vice President

Ойындар

During the Soviet military involvement in Afghanistan, their aircraft would sometimes attack Mujahideen bases in Pakistani territory. Initially, Pakistan couldn't prevent those intrusions because it lacked modern fighter aircraft. But they managed to convince USA to sell them F-16, a state of the art fighter airplane. First results came in 1986. when F-16s shot down two Su-22s of Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. The first Soviet aircraft would be confirmed shot down in August 1988. And the victim was none other than a future vice-president of Russia, Alexander Rutskoy. That wasn't his first shootdown in the war either. This video tells both stories.

Good video. 1) Rules of engagement was that the pilot was only cleared to shoot if the wreckage was to stay inside Pakistan borders. 2) I was a GD rep with the PAF from 85 to 88 and had met most of the players during this time. 3) The F-16 lost during this time was a Kamra aircraft that was a blue-on-blue event (knew both pilots).

The US had offered Pakistan 3 fighters in the 1980 deal. Namely: -A7 Corsair -F20 Tiger shark -A10 thunderbolt (yes Pakistan could've been the first foreign buyer of the warthog) But the Pakistani government decided to persuade the US into selling them the Viper/Falcon.

(BTW: I'm surprised there is so many "fictional" mods like F-22, Rafale, Su-57 having nothing in common with their real counterparts, but there is no i.e. F-16A to portray proper fighters for video like this one.)

Thanks! As for the airplanes you mention, they are just mods and I believe that most details about them are just guesses by their authors because they can't possibly access the right information. And making the A version of F-16 would take lots of effort to do it properly. I listened to several interviews with module developers, making a different version of an airplane is nearly like developing another module. Financial effect from developing F-16A would be questionable. Heatblur is an exception here, they developed F-14B first and then F-14A but it was free for the module owners.

It seems like the Su-25 is analogous to the U.S.A.F.'s A-10 Warthog, which does not appear to have been designed with air combat in mind - were the Soviets NOT providing escorts, in an attempt to prevent an escalation of hostilities with Islamabad?

It seems that some MiG-23s might have been there. A Russian viewer commented on that here (in Russian language but GT will translate it well enough). Supposedly, they didn't shoot for political reasons. Attacking Mujahideen camps across the border was considered acceptable, but apparently shooting down a Pakistani jet in Pakistani airspace was too much.

Arabs did manage to shoot down a number of Israeli jets during the 1973 war too. The exact number is disputed but there were kills scored. Iraqi MiG-21s shot down at least two Iranian F-5s. Pakistan didn't have BVR capabilities at that time. So it could have been a disaster for them if Russians retaliated.

@@showtime112 yep. The Indians used Mig-23 and Mig-27s for ground attack roles. And the MiG-25 is a tank buster. Just like the A-10.

@@RAPTORGAMINGz Pakistani F-16s didn't have BVR capabilities in 1999 either. That is the reason they didn't dare to fly sorties against Indian MiG-29s. Air superiority is one of the reason why Indians had a decisive victory in Kargil war too. Former prime minister of Pakistan also confirmed about more than 3000 pakistani causalities.
