Mig19 and mig21 were terrific fighters for that time. Especially mig19 which was produced since early 50s was before its time in performance. Thats why, we in Albania, had around 90 mig19 chinese version F-6 and only around 10 mig21 again chinese version F-7. They were in service for a long time til 2005.

Good fighters but hard to handle since their flight command systems were rough, until the MiG-29 and Su-27 arrival. On the other side the lovely F-4 was known as being tricky especially when driven by former B-52 pilots…Olds and co were truly supermen seeing their accomplishment

Twenty years ago perhaps, I got to meet General Ritchie at the Offutt AFB Open House Airshow. A very personable fellow, not a hint of Top Gun arrogance, but an absolute air of professionalism and dedication. I was honored and delighted to shake the man's hand and later to watch him take up a Phantom for a demonstration.

Hey Showtime 112, thanks for another excellent video on the air combat over North Vietnam. It’s often assumed most of the MIG kills were made by USAF and USN fighter jets. However, there was a little known fact that a US Marines F-4 Phantom did achieve air to air kill in Vietnam, albeit the only USMC fighter jet to have done so. If you could make this video, that would be awesome to show the skills of the other branch of naval aviation.

Thanks for commenting! Currently, we don't have a flyable Phantom in DCS. There's just an AI model. But, Eagle Dynamics (DCS developer) recently released '2022 And Beyond' video in which they teased us with new elements of the game. There was a brief image of what looks like F-4 Phantom reticle. It will at least a year before we get the Phantom, but when we do, I intend to cover a whole bunch of its history. That might include the Marine kill too.

Thanks for the interesting post. I'm pretty surprised word didn't get through to the Narrator that the MIG-19 was a total flop. Endlessly plagued by defects, caught fire again and again. Not a single Warsaw Pact pilot volunteered to take the control of this flying catastrophe. The MIG 21 was deployed not a day too early and, unlike the MiG 19, was a complete success.

I remember seeing one MIG at Hanoi war museum; it had 15 stars painted on its body,denoting 15 kills of American planes

Thanks for the suggestion. There are a lot of F-4 missions I would love to reenact. But its current status in DCS is not good enough for a leading role. It is essentially an AI only aircraft with an outdated 3D model. It can be flown through a mod but it borrows cockpit from other modules. So, if we ever get a proper Phantom module, this is definitely a good suggestion.

This is the first time I have seen the inside of a MiG 19 cockpit. I'm familiar with 15/17 and 21 cockpits (the latter I saw myself in real life) but not the 19. Thanks.

Great recounting of this story, your usual excellent work. (One detail note: your cockpit view of the MiG, the artificial horizon, or "gyro", depicts "black over white", meaning "inverted", when the aircraft is upright. Fix that!)

Thanks for the comment! As for the artificial horizon, this seems to be correct. Russians made them like that on some early models (no idea why). But even if it wasn't so, I can't just change details about the modules. They are developed by software companies and they are the way they are.

Major Locher's rescue is another story in and of itself, After being shot down, he walked almost 12 miles from his landing site, Eventually he saw a Flight of Phantoms flying overhead and was able to contact them on Guard, and ID himself. The Sandy Skyraiders took heavy Small Arms and SAM fire from villages in the area, and has a Mig-21 blow through their formation. Direction Finding equipment in the Helos was finally able to Pinpoint Major Locher, who was snatched up by the Jollys for a trip to NKP. The Helo crews said at the time, until they had Locher on the hoist coming up, they were pretty sure it was a decoy, and they were all going to die....that says a lot to the Dedication of the Rescue Crews.

Excellent video! Great history on Vietnam air war. Can you do one on the missions of Robin Olds combat flights above Vietnam? The old History Channel tv show Dogfights showcased an entire episode on his exploits.

Thanks! I actually own the DVD set of Dogfights so I'm familiar with that. That is certainly a historic event that would be interesting to recreate and probably very popular. However, Phantoms are not yet flyable, they only exist as AI modules. Eagle Dynamics mention it might come in a couple of years. But, some guys are working on a flyable Phantom mod so maybe when that is completed I'll try that one.

@@showtime112 Too bad. When that playable model comes out and if you plan to do it let your viewers know ASAP! Also, if I may suggest another episode both based on actual pilots? Colonel Yevgeny Pepelyaev of the 196th FAR USSR (in a MiG 15) over N. Korea. Russian sources say he was responsible for 19 shoot downs, he said less while America sources say even more! Or Captain Joe C. McConnell of the 39th FIS, he shot down 16 enemy over North Korea (in an F 86), the highest number I think. Just two suggestions for maybe a future project. Peace.

There are F-86 and MiG-15 as flyable modules, plus F-80, B-29 and Mustang for support roles. So far, I found material for at least ten videos :)

I was stationed aboard the Kitty Hawk from 71 to 73 and was part of the linebacker campaign in 72 During this time the Kitty Hawk was attacked by 4 migs, not sure if they were 19's or 21's just know that we launched 2 F-4's that were always at the ready during flight ops. One mig was shot down and the other three turned and ran,one of which I believe was hit also. At that time it was thought by many that Vietnamese pilots in Russian migs were no match for our squadrons whether AF, Marine, or Navy, although there were a number of pilots that were shot down during that period.

I believe those were MiG-21s you are talking about. Navy pilot's very significantly improved their skills in the second part of the war. As for Vietnamese pilots, I think some of them were quite good and considering the circumstances, they managed to be a very serious factor through the whole period. Thanks for the comment!

North Vietnam's aggression eventually confirmed to the whole world by North Vietnamese occupation of South Vietnam in 1975.

Thanks for the comment. Let me try to answer your questions. In the first shootdown, there was just a single Phantom. I couldn't find an explanation why it was alone. Or maybe you mean when the Phantoms attacked the MiG-21s? No 2 Phantom (Lt Markle) fired two Sparrows and shot down one of the MiGs. After his leader (Maj Lodge) was shot down by the MiG-19s, the Oyster flight chose to disengage instead of fighting them. They were getting low on fuel and missiles and entering a maneuvering dogfight with the agile MiGs might have ended badly.

A lot of people don't know this but the Mig 19 and 17 were primarily responsible for most of the Vietnamese air kills. The Mig 21 was few in number The Mig 19 and seventeen were very maneuverable fast and the Vietnamese had many of them.

@@drjbraun It might not seem 'normal' to most people but that's what they train for.

I read memoirs of Soviet instructors in Vietnam - they wrote that Vietnamese were stubborn in learning but still had very bad pilot skills. Also, they could get blackout in the middle of a maneuver with few G because they often were half-starved, and they forced the pilots to eat more meat because their traditional food was too non-nutritive. They tried to teach them to shoot rockets from a long distance and operate with the rocket using radar but it was too hard for the Vietnamese pilots to control their single-seat aircraft and operate with the rocket at the same time. That's why they usually launched their rockets from short distances of 1.5-2 km and didn't control it at all. F4 had WSO for this purpose.

Apparently, the pilot ran out of fuel just before the landing. I simulated it by shutting the engines off in the final phase of landing. After a few seconds, I lost any ability to move the control surfaces and this is what happened. I'm not sure if this is realistically modeled.

Oyster 1 flew OY463 on 10MAY72 but it was a D model-your video shows an F-4E. After they were shot, Oyster 1 went into a flat spin, not just dove into the ground. Capt Roger Locher ejected and spent 23 days evading capture in the jungle. May Bob Lodge rode the aircraft in.

Major Bob Lodge rode his Phantom in by choice. He could have ejected but didn't want to. Seems like he was more afraid of being a POW than of dying.

@@d.cypher2920 I eventually plan to expand to area such as WWII. But generally, I will probably stay in aviation field. DCS is not a dedicated tool for making these videos but it serves a purpose well. There are other games but I don't have much time to learn them enough. DCS is taking pretty much all my time. There are more airplanes to learn (F-16, Harrier, F-14, A-10, all the Warbirds). And many more coming. I believe I won't run out of topics anytime soon :)

@@ArqHPA You open KZread on a computer (not a phone or tablet). In the top right corner, there's your account logo (in your case, the letter G in a circle). When you click on it, a drop down menu opens. You select 'KZread Studio' Then on the left side, you have a bunch of options , the top one is Dashboard. You scroll down to the last one called Audio Library and select it. Then just search for the title in the search field.

Thanks a lot for a other NAM piece of history as always. What i don't really understand is the fact! Why the Pilots of the F-4's keep flying just straight without making any attempt of trying escaping the cannon fire of the MIG-19 for the Pilot of the MIG-19 it does look like easy kills or i am missing out something ? Thank you for your comment, again. I knew someone would ask about why Lodge kept following the MiG-21 instead of evading the MiG-19. It's a clear case of target fixation. Lodge had shot down a MiG-21 moments ago and this would have been his fourth (the highest score of the war then). When his airplane was hit, it was probably already too late. Those big cannon rounds make a lot of damage once they hit. As for his wingman, he probably didn't notice the MiG-19s until they came very close to Lodge's plane. F-4D had no guns and a Sidewinder might have hit his leader just as easily as the enemy. This story is described in a book that I've owned since I was about 14 and I've read it so many times. To sum up, in real combat, pilots rarely have perfect situational awareness. As for Phantom being almost the only type, I meant in the USAF, not Navy. F-105 was no longer used except for SAM suppression. F-100s, F-104s and others have been pulled out year ago. F-111 use was more of a prototype testing in real combat conditions and A-1 was used for CSAR. B-52 was a strategic bomber. So, when the USAF sent tactical fighters-bombers to the North in 1972, it was almost exclusively Phantoms.

@@RYDER8140 As far as I can tell, the wingman warned Lodge but he couldn't achieve a missile lock on the MiG. Lodge probably thought that he only needed a few more seconds in which he could kill the MiG in front of him and evade the one behind. We will never know for sure but that seems the only logical explanation to me.

Smart / guided bombs have been used well before the Vietnam war, e.g. by the Luftwaffe in WW2 - see Fritz-X and Hs 293. Maybe you could make a video of the sinking of Battleship Roma by KG 100.

I would call those guided, perhaps not smart. That would be an interesting topic but so far, there don't seem to be available assets in any of flight simulations. Maybe IL-2 Great Battles will introduce those weapons someday. Thanks for your suggestion.

I think they were MFs. Of course, DCS only has bis model so it's bis in the video.

@@Lemard77 Yes, those were the models they had. It would be cool to have an earlier version of MiG-21 but it's not very likely to happen, I'm afraid.

Actually, that was made this way on purpose. The Vietnamese pilot who shot down Major Lodge ran out of fuel and was killed while attempting to perform a dead stick landing.

@@showtime112 I'm guessing the MiG-19's ejection seat was not safe to use when it became clear he wasn't going to make it. There is no way it was a 0/0 ejection seat, it must have had airspeed and altitude minimums.

@@burnttoast111 Yeah, it wasn't a zero/zero seat. I replicated the situation by shutting down the engines just before the touchdown. Basically, you lose ability to move control surfaces and the airplane first climbs a bit and then smashes into the runway. At least that's how it's modeled in DCS.

@@showtime112 I suspect that a hydraulic failure on engine shutdown is inaccurate, as brakes and ground steering would likely be affected, but I really don't know. Just seems very unsafe. RAZBAM doesn't seem to have the best modeling of aircraft, so I would take it with a grain of salt.

Oh, thank you a million times for this! I got several extremely negative comments about the music and was getting a bit annoyed by them. The music sounds like the one from this period, it is loud and aggressive but so are jet fighters, for Pete's sake!!!! While it wouldn't work well for a video about puppies doing cute things, I think it's just right for this!

I'm perfectly aware of that. Also, the MiGs are the wrong models as well. There's a limited choice of assets, the closest one is always selected.

11 Migs were shot down vs 2 F-4's 8 USN and 3 AF. Yes Lodge and Markle got the 21's but the next plane to be shot down was Lodges F-4 by Mig 19's at 9:44 AM. The last thing Locher heard before ejecting was Steve Ritchie's Oyster 3 There's a Splash! Next F-4 shot down was at 10:14 that Mig-19 was almost shot down by a Maneuver kill but recovered just above the ground.

@@showtime112 amazing was Roger Locher being rescued at 23 days on the day he was rescued a F-4 shot down a MIG-19 with 20MM but he did flying at Mach 1 the only kill ever.

According to some sources, he chose not to eject, fearing the enemy might gain valuable intelligence if they captured him. I only recently found out he also flew the Thud in Vietnam during the Rolling Thunder.

I can think of several reasons and it's probably a combination of them. - That pilot had just witnessed two of his comrades getting shot down. That must have been a confidence killer. - Soviet and Chinese trained pilots were not trained to dogfight. Only intercept under strict ground control. In fact, Vietnamese tactics were to hit and run, not stay and turn. - It is also very likely that he received orders from the ground to run away relying on speed. But, Phantom was fast too and missiles were even faster.

The Mig-19 pilot should fly DCS, You would have a lot more experience with dead stick landings, I have no problem landing on the side of mountains.

True. Also, this isn't really Vietnam 😁 Unfortunately, we don't have every aircraft in every variant in DCS. So often I have to approximate. The only other alternative would be not to make videos.

Yeah. In reality, the pilot ran out of fuel just before landing and was killed in the attempt.

Thanks for the comment. In this case, radar auto-acquisition mode was used. There's a switch on the left side panel (next to the radar on/off switch). It's called target lock switch I think. It will automatically acquire a target and you don't need to set wingspan. When you see that reticle with 'wings' following the target, that's it. If you don't have radar lock, then you set the wingspan with that big black wheel (under the green button just under the gunsight screen. You need to know the wingspan of a particular airplane (you can google it).

It all depends upon the skill of pilot. You can kill F 22 with MIG 21 modified as Bison as old is always gold.

@@showtime112 Our Squadron leader Abhinandan Bartaman killed F16 just by flying on MIG 21 modified version i .e Bison in 2019. He is a great pilot.

Good video. But I make a couple of corrections: indeed the USN and USAF F-4 Phantoms claimed 11 MiG kills that day, but VPAF loss records confirms only 8 of them. Furthermore, besides the MiG-19 victories against F-4D/E you describe here, a pair of VPAF MiG-21 pilots of the 921 FR did shot down two F-4J of the USS Constellation: the wingman Vu Duc Hop shot down the VF-92 Phantom of Harry Blackburn and Stephen Rudloff, and the leader Le Thanh Dao shot down the VF-96 Phantom of the brand new crowned aces Randall Cunningham and William Driscoll. Yes, I'm aware that in US sources these losses are credited to AAA and SA-2 respectively. But as a matter of fact, were downed by these MiG-21s.

Hey, thank you very much for your comment. As for the claims, there are a lot of discrepancies between US and Vietnamese sources. In fact, they disagree more than they agree 😁 This could be true. Especially since Cunningham and Driscoll were super hyped up after three kills so they forgot about situational awareness. I can't remember what Toperczer says about it, I will check it out.

@@showtime112 You're wellcome. BTW, in your tutorial in Hrvatski (Croatian) sometimes I understand a lot because of their similarities with Russian. Yes, I know that Croatian and Russian are in different branches of the Slavic languages family tree (Croatian in the Southern Slavic branch, Russian in the Eastern Slavic one), but still sounds very intelligbly to me. Russian is not my mother tongue (Spanish is), not the second language (English is), but the third one. I learnt to love it, in spite of its hard complexities.

@@showtime112 Regarding Cunnigham-Driscoll being shot down by Le Thanh Dao's MiG-21: 1. They were in the area where Blackburn-Rudloff were downed, Driscoll even screamed to Cunningham: "Duke, look! A Phantom is flaming like a torch!", evidently seeing the moment the VF-92 F-4J was bagged. 2. Both Vu Duc Hop and Le Thanh Dao were flying MiG-21PFMs totally painted in green. You can see the ilustration of Dao's "Red 5040" fully in green on Osprey's book about MiG-21s by Toperczer. So, no surprise that Cunnigham-Driscoll did not see Dao's MiG-21 flying bellow and behind its Phantom. 3. The same Cunningham and Driscoll always said that they had no warning from its RWR, so they assumed that the Vietnamese used a IR version of the SA-2 (S-75 Dvina, I prefer the Russian name). Now knowing that Dao claims this F-4 kill, it makes more sense to plainly admitt that it wasn't an IR S-75, but an IR R-3S.

I checked Toperczer's book on MiG-21 units of the Vietnam War. In fact, there are four F-4s claimed by 21s on 10 May. The other two having very few details, however. And the two you mention are USN so not a focus of this video anyway 😁

@@Elrusoargentino Well, those two languages are like distant cousins. You can recognize a few words but generally, they are not mutually intelligible. I speak a couple of romance languages (Italian, Brazilian Portuguese). It seems to me that they are even closer together than Slavic languages. I came across a book in Spanish (which I've never learned) called 'Malvinas La Guerra Aerea - Skyhawk A-4Q'. If I read it slowly and with full concentration, I can understand almost everything (although, the subject is quite familiar to me which makes it easier).

you have to trust your commander expectations on both 😢

2 AF F-4's were shot down by Mig-19's on 5/10/72 3 KIA and 1 RES. 11 Migs shot down 8 USN 3 USAF.

@@showtime112 They lost 2 F-4'S 1 to AAA 1KIA,1POW and 1 to SAM 2 Res.

Paul Doumer and Dragons Jaw both had thousands of pounds of bombs dropped near them, it was very hard to hit due to heavy defences, even with guided bombs. I once read a book about the bombing attempts, it was insane. Iirc the vietnamese knew the corridors the bombers used and when so they had a gauntlet of AA waiting and MiGs were never far.

During NAM F4 Phantoms had their Mig kills but Mig 21 n Mig 19 pilots had their F4 kills too. Some ET UFOs also shot down 1 B52 bomber but that's a classified info.

F-105 only served in a specialized Wild Weasel role in this second phase of the war. A-7D was also mostly used in a specialized 'Sandy' role. I was talking about strike and fighter missions over North Vietnam and in this phase, F-4 performed most of them.

Couple of factual errors. All the MigCAP forces took off from Udorn, not Ubon. And they flew F-4Ds not F-4Es as depicted.

The video doesn't say that MiGCAP took off from Ubon. It simply starts with them already in flight without specifying their home base. I didn't want to make a separate takeoff scene and it didn't seem decisively important. As for the F-4 variant, it's not a factual error. It was simply the only choice. F-4D is not available in DCS World.

At 4:15 into the presentation, looks like the attitude indicator is upside down!

Sparrow so effective in simulated reality

Oh, it was quite the opposite. This was one of the rare occasions in the Vietnam War where Sparrow performed according to expectations. Conditions allowed for BVR shots against non-maneuvering targets and it scored with 50 percent success (as opposed to the usual 8 percent). Recreating that in DCS World was anything but easy. I was flying a MiG-21, straight and level, being an easy target and basically, letting AI Phantoms shoot me down. Guess what? They missed about ten times in a row! Eventually, I had to 'cheat' and fly an F-15 against AI MiG-21s set to 'no reaction to threat' in order to recreate a simple intercept! Perhaps the fault was just with the AI shooting Sparrows from maximum possible range.

Ok! My name is Sgt. Joey Hill. I was the Crew Chief of F4D 650784 from 1971 and 1972 at Udorn. Before Major Lodge, I was lieutenant Markle's Crew Chief in the 555TFS at Udorn. F4D 65-0784 was the aircraft that Major Lodge and once lieutenant Locher and then Captain Locher got all 3 of their M.I.G. 21 KILLS while flying. THEY WERE NOT IN 463 TAIL NUMBER. Capt. Richie before that day on May 10th 1972 had no MIG kills in 463 so why are you depicting 463 as the lead and only aircraft when 784 was the lead of Oyster flight and had the most MIG kills on it?? You would do justice to the memory of Major Lodge to correct your video of Oyster One's tail number and the correct takeoff point of Udorn RTAFB and the Triple Nickel. Facts are Facts!

Because creating proper skins for aircraft is really not easy. It takes skills and time. And most people wouldn't even know it. Assets are limited, I can make videos as they are, or not make them at all. Even if certain things can be done, it would take way too long to do them.

I never understood why so many Combat flight sim do not including the F-8 crusaders? It had more kills than the F-4 and was a single seated aircraft with guns. That plane and those pilots kicked ass. How hard can it be to include the plane? Does anyone know a flight sim that includes the F-8?😳😳

Actually, it's quite hard 😁 Eagle Dynamics executives mention that they need 10-12 thousand man hours to develop a module. In money, its about 1,5 - 2 million USD. But good news is that someone is working on it. Leatherneck Simulations are developing F-8 Crusader for DCS World. Exact date of release hasn't been announced but it is definitely coming!

@@showtime112 A few years ago I had the honor to meet a F-8 pilot who flew during the Nam war. I told him I would buy him a drink if he told me what it was like to fly the Crusader. He got glassy eyed when he talked about what a joy it was to fly that plane. He said he never merged with the F-4 in the same way he did with the F-8. He said the only drawback was landing.

I'm not sure where you are from but I think to most people in the West, hard rock is the soundtrack of the Vietnam War. Especially the thunderous guitar of Jimmy Hendrix. (Which you can't use that for copyright reasons, of course). This song is not a period original but it tries to sound exactly like hard rock from late 60s / early '70s and I think it is ideal for this.
