    I remember the first time hearing about LP ranges on the BBC it was super disheartening. "What do you mean I could be a plat player on my worst days?" In reality tho I've come to the realization that having an LP range problem is actually one of the best problems you can have. All you have to do is identify even a single thing that drags you down in LP and focus on it to tighten your bellcurve and usually for the positive.

    Great Video! First I watched, coming from Coach Cupcake. It really reassured me that I am going in the right direction with my approach to my e.g. current loss streak. I spedrun through Gold within a week after starting to watch Coach Cupcakes videos and then got excited to see how much further I climb. Made it to P2 and dropped to P3 50 LP several times. Loosing 50 LP at once is btw REALLY frustrating even when I tell myself I can get it back. And I had win streaks and loose streaks since then. What helped me is just recognizing when I need a break, either stopping for the evening or take a week off of League entirely.

    The most important thing that I've learned through painfull trial and error was to NOT play ranked when you are not ok with the possibility of losing. Not saying you should expect to lose, quite the opposite play to your best ability to win, but the moment you queue accept the fact that there may be things out of you hands that will lead to a loss and that's ok,it's not the end of the world it doesn't mean you suck or w/e other bs. All the games I played with this mentally were fun and led to winning games that seemed to be lost.

    Good video, thx. Something I felt was missing was more specific discussion of *how to identify one's average level of play* with the associated rank. It seems fair to say that most players do not know what their average level of play is, our own bell curves are usually invisible to us - generating confusion and distress over experiencing LP variance as you describe. You mentioned numbers of games played (a potentially meaningful number being 75-100), and showed an example of Zed/Yone's rank distribution over time. Would you say such data is mandatory for a player's true ability (equating to mean rank) to be assessed? Would you care to plant a flag and say one's average rank over the last 100(?) games they played (within a certain timeframe? 6 months? 3 months? ect.) is the most accurate description of their core ability? Taking Zed/Yone as an example, would his Zed be considered ~mid D3, but his Yone cannot be judged yet because he is

  • @shadowatom

    @shadowatom

    You'd definitely need a large enough sample size to tell where a player's average is in order to get a better idea of the standard deviation. I think you could make the argument for their Zed being mid D3, but I don't think the sample size was actually that large (looks like about 60-70ish games?), and it seems like they've played Yone for about 80-90ish games, so I'd say the Yone rank is hypothetically a bit more accurate, but also depends on the level of champion mastery before that point I imagine. Regardless, I feel like the biggest take away from this video shouldn't be to try and find what your true rank is, but more so just to reduce the variance of your play. That would probably mean different things to different people since every will struggle with different concepts and skill sets. If you really wanted to, I suppose you could figure out what you needed to focus on and what measurable stat correlates with it and find the standard deviation of that over, say, 100 games? The sample size isn't too important since I don't think we're really looking for a super precise answer of "*this* is my skill", but it should probably be at least 75 like you said to help average things out such as the matchmaking. I'm not a statistician though, so do take this with a grain of salt ;) It'd be up to you if you wanted to break the data down between patches, but I think that'd depend on what you were measuring. If you're measuring something that isn't affected by a patch, it probably doesn't matter as much, but if your champion gets nerfed/buffed, you may want to split up the data. Again though, not a statistician, nor am I an expert in League for that matter! Just figured I'd throw in my two cents.

    It's quite hard to accurately assess where you are at (IN THE MOMENT). It's really not until later in your journey in HINDSIGHT are you able to truly understand what level you were at and WHY. I don't think its overly important to accurately understand your proper rank, as long as you have ROUGH idea based off of playing a decent sample size of games at a particular elo bracket.

    I'm curious what Curtis would have to say about technical analysis of LP charts. Technical analysis is a technique used in stock trading to analyze the dips and jumps of the price of a stock over time, in order to understand when the appropriate times to buy (When the stock it its lowest point) or sell (When the stock is at it's highest point). In my own journey I recently observed that the valleys of my LP chart were gradually becoming higher and higher over time. Eventually the new valley (lowest point in my LP range) was higher than the previous peak of my LP. For me that quantified success at mastery of current learning objectives (that or variance and I was just on a hot streak, who's to say?)

    Great video, thanks! "Map state calibration" sounds a bit off to me. What are you calibrating exactly? Sounds more like awareness or confirmation perhaps. That aside, could you elaborate a bit on what's included in this? Are we talking about player positions on the map, wave states and obejctives or are you also including things like who's fed, itemization etc?

    What people need to understand is that LP fluctuations are a normal part of your journey. Don't be struck by big swings, go back to the basics and refine them, and focus on increasing your base floor overtime. LP gain is simply a byproduct of that process.

    I think you're missing something in your assessment of the lp fluctuations in the zed -> yone player. Lp fluctuations are minimized near a tier border because you drop to 0lp (sometimes for multiple games) before demoting. On your graph you see the player lost several games at or around 0lp but lost little or no lp - this artificially makes his lp spread look tighter than if he was bouncing between d4/d3. The rest (including the bit about the bell curve) was spot on though.

    I have lots of fluctuations, I am consistent but often get flamed by my team for my choice of pick. I went on a 14 straight win streak in diamond playing teemo jungle, but my team often see the pick and are either abusive, run it down after first death and spam ping my champion without actually doing anything wrong. It may not contribute to fluctuations but having a champ team mates do not respect can limit your ceiling.

    I kind of agree but at the time i was emerald for the entire season last season, but for like the last 6 months i was hardstuck gold... I could not believe it. I chalk that up to adc having been in a very bad spot for that time and the only viable adc's being lethality adc's namely mf and senna which i dont play. The moment they buffed crit adc's I went back to emerald. So sure you can go and say im not a real player, but to me it just looks like a case of a class being (purposely) held down.

    "how much lp do you fluctuate" quite a bit actually. Some days I have the best luck ever in solo Q and my rando teammates are actually pretty ok... Other days im tilted to the point im questioning how human kind can be considered an intelligent species after game 3 of a 12 game loss streak thats filled with feeders, afk "players", and/or just terrible macro calls that the team follows despite being pinged to not to. Its a team game, so like while its helpful to engage in self improvement theres only so much that one person can accomplish, and nobody can 1v9 in every match.

A big factor though that was causing mental booming was the mmr to lp disconnect on demotions had a major anchor effect where each demotions makes lp gains worse. BUT THANKFULLY the problem for lp gains disconnect was fixed with the change to make demotions set you to 50 lp. Just my two cents but I think so much of the painfulness of solo queue was in that disconnection of mmr to lp making your gameplay quality influenced by something unrelated to the actual game

    Think of lull states as periods when you have opportunity to think about the game. When your coming out of base, after you pushed a wave, when your ahead and can easily beat your opponent.
